I listened through the Coachella live feed and tried to write down some common themes I found in the most popular new music. Based upon my research, I'm going to try and write an album consisting entirely of songs with tempos between 70 and 80 bpm (but double time the chorus); in either the key of F, C, or B; and with literally only one chord progression (no more than three chords) for about 3:30. See you after I make the most fire album of 2016.

Here's my review

I can definitely say that this kicks the s/t’s butt. The song progressions and the track listing was wonderfully executed. I thought that all of the tracks were good, but Kaiah's Connectant Ville was something else. The true marvel of the album. Bear’s style works really well with the cello playing and you guys should make a collaboration album together. It left a much more memorable impression on me than the sampled cello on your previous release.

Opener was gorgeous noise. The Dragon on the Shore Beside the Sea was another surprise, being a post-rock 12 minute bang. I have a couple of complaints. Complaint 1 is that it would feel more natural for it to sustain and flow into the closer (which reminded me of Portishead’s Deep Water) but it is still works well. Complaint 2 is the 3:34 transition into the second punchy section. I feel like you could have given some time for the previous section to ring out before hitting it with a more powerful wave of sound. That’s my opinion though.

Your Baileys of Water was clearly a nod to NMH. You could hear it in the tempo of strumming. The quality did tend to get a bit too muddy, but I thought it was still lovely. My,My,My also had some E6 vibes on it.

Personally I am not too keen on the religious imagery that is this close to the “script” but I think Bear did a good job at extracting the thematics from the passages and concentrate more on what emotions it brought up rather than what the plot of the passages.

This album is definitely a step forward. I am looking forward to the next step in your career!

Even Oxen - Arrayed Above the Seraphim Lights

Fucking amazing dude, I honestly thought the EP was as good as it was gonna get for a while, but this shattered that belief.
Luma is still a great track, can never get that shit out of my head. I like the fuzz acoustic all over this album, it works really well in Luma, but works even better in Baileys of Water.
So much energy in that track, it's one of my favs.
The cello playing Kaiah's is fucking brilliant, most beautiful song you've written to date. Another stand out track.
And godDAMN that 11 minute power electronics track!!
I was a little unsure of it in the beginning, but once the build up started going, ohhhhhh man, it was fucking sick dude.
I'm a sucker for rhythmic noise and that satiated every one of my cravings, I loved it.
Wrapping the whole thing up with a nice little solo acoustic number was a good idea. Strips away all the bells and whistles to show off your songwriting talents after a mind melter like Dragon.
My,My,My and Cherubim were really nice as well, but were the only real weak moments on this album as they didn't really sick in my memory.
That could just be cause it's a first listen though (I'm gonna listen to it many more time don't you worry).
overall great stuff man, I'm loving it.

You know how sometimes you don't respect a complex piece of music until you get to know & understand how much hard work went into making it? It might be good to invest some time into getting to know what's going on in your life in the same way.

This is nice. Some really laid-back songwriting here with a strong '70s feel. People praise him as a pianist, but the songwriting is first and foremost for me. Only the instrumental tracks are a little bit boring. 7/10

>Tangerine Dream - Rubycon
I still don't really get this stuff. Disregarding the fact that synths sound dated or that lame techno followed, the compositions just aren't interesting. Both tracks build up to nothing, essentially. I've enjoyed Timewind and even Force Majeure, but this is just kind of less daring and engaging. 4/10

I can see the point about it being very "FL Studio-y," which is pretty true, but the games it's based off of came out in the mid-90s, dude.

>>64186261
It's definitely much better with the game. I do find myself skipping most of the tracks every time I hear it, though. Ruins and Spider Dance are my favs. It should be a general rule that you should experience media with the intended soundtrack first instead of just listening to it without the original work imo.

Even Oxen - Arrayed Above the Seraphim Lights (2016)
>lo-fi indie, indie folk

Good job Bear, you've made an album so good that I retroactively like your EP less (I still love it though). This is a major improvement over the s/t release in every way. Recording quality, songwriting, instrumentation, everything. The dynamics on this album are incredible, it goes from rollicking NMH-esque folk rock ("Your Baileys of Water" and "Luma", the best track here), to quiet, sparser indie folk ("My My My" and the title track, which reminds me a lot of Car Seat Headrest for some reason, I think its the vocals), and fucking power electronics ("The Dragon on the Shore Beside the Sea)! That track is incredible, and it fits the folky vibes of the album so well, somehow. I can't wait to see what you do next, Bear. Also the cello and the fuzzy guitars are rad.

Denzel Curry - Imperial (2016)
>trap rap, southern hip hop

When it goes hard, it gets real good, but sometimes it misses its mark by a mile. The best thing here is the production, the beats are incredible, most of the time. I'm just not feeling Curry's vocals too much, and a lot of the hooks feel tacked on and too poppy for their own good. "Narcotics" and "This Life" are certified bangers though

This is some dirty, nasty garage rock delivered hot and energetic live. Unfortunately, other than Starship (what a song), the whole thing is just garage rock. Solidly pleases, but only the last track really blows me away.

Starting on Red Moon.

In the meantime, Ratus Updatus. Really was disappointed by Flutter and its painful drop in vivacity compared to Dreams. And then Zone Tripper's tracklist just melted into some vaguely electrifying gloop twenty or so minutes in. Erans and the two Ayuo records, however, were quite tight aite.

Black Uhuru - Showcase (1979)
>roots reggae

Lacks any sort of standout moment, but the consistency here is wonderful. All of the riddims are really nice, spacious, and heavily bassy. Its weirder than a lot of reggae I've heard, its groove is more droning and ominous than really rhythmic. And its real cool.

3.0+

King Diamond - Abigail (1987)
>heavy metal

It's just...generic heavy metal. Its servicable though, I love the solos and the soundscaping is nice. But King Diamond, man. I like him as the frontman of Mercyful Fate, but as the frontman of his own band he's so hammy he's basically a fucking pig. Adds character to the album, but also adds a factor of severe, severe irritation.

Oh my, this is beautiful. Really full and alive organic folk that journeys and blossoms. It strikes a wonderful balance between numerous world influences and a more modern blend of things like electric guitar, with each "phase" entering and doing its thing seamlessly. No track feels too long either; compositional tightness all around. No, this is really excellent, I'm recommending it to everyone. Add it to your charts.

Wow, this is the least interesting thing I've ever heard in my entire life. Its like if Sonic Youth or The Velvet Underground decided to lose every single thing that makes them special and recorded an album.
