Could someone please explain relative minor and major chords to me? I've read it on Wikipedia and i still don't get it.
thoughts on this? Any idea what i could pair it with?
>>63779107
that 1x8 20w they make
>>63778077
I don't enjoy listening to his music but he's an incredibly skilled guitarist.
>>63778163
The album Javier out out wasn't my thing, but he's definitely a great guitarist.
>>63778203
He has a stage presence almost no one has. I always recommend people see him if they get the chance. Love or hate him he's pretty much the gold standard for stage presence. Incredible showman.
>>63778287
MAB's band waa hilariously stupid.

Pic related is what the vocalist looks like now.
>>63779107
Orange PPC212.
>>63779084
Not the greatest explanation theory-wise, but relative major/minor keys have the same scale, but different roots and thus intervals/notes from it. E.g. C major scale uses the same notes as A minor, but C major chord is C-E-G (major 3rd + minor 3rd) while A minor is A-C-E (minor 3rd + major 3rd).
what is a god whammy pedal for a low budget?
[falamalamalam rororo unique post]
>>63779160
Vai also had incredible cheekbones
>>63779107
I have it. Paired with a 112" cab loaded with a celestion V30
Don't get the 8" speaker, it sounds like ass apparently.
Volume wise it's loud enough for a 3 piece, haven't tried it against bigger guitar amps.
Tone wise, it's pretty good, I get what I want out of it, but the cleans could be better, they feel a bit "dull" on certain settings.
However, the shape knob is the most stupid, retarded thing ever and I'd take even a 2 knob EQ over it any day, and the knobs are a bit sensitive.
>>63779160
Didn't Javier put out a new album anyway ?
>>63779208
Vai is like a Jojo character, he's far too fabulous for this world.
>>63779203
Do you mean a pitch shifting pedal like the digitech Whammy or a Wah pedal?
>>63779264
I was thinking of a wah pedal
>>63779119

Does anyone own a baritone guitar? How do you like it? What do you use it for?
>>63779466
Yeah, how can I play wonderwall without a pick?
>>63779369
I like the Vox 847, it has a wider seep range than your average crybaby pedal. Should be able to find a used one cheap
>>63779369
Doesn't matter. Wah always sounds shit unless you play pornocore. If that's the case any shitty autowah will do.
how do y'all feel about experimental guitars?
is there anything you know today that you'd wish you learned when you were still a beginner?
>>63779606
With your dick like the rest of us.
>>63779629
I think a wah pedal is pretty fun if you're doing some reggae stuff or stoner-core
>>63779639
yeah for me to get a better fucking guitar as a first
I so badly want a fucking jazzmaster. I'm not sure I could even use it and I probably can't spare the money either, but the J Mascis Squier looks to be the best compromise between price and features (a good bridge).
I might need talking down.
Jazzmaster.
>>63779629
I love the sound of a wah wah despite it being used in porn so much
>>63779673
At this point I'm convinced it's a fender shill
>>63779639
I wish I learned my guitar is shit and I need a far better one.
>>63779638
I don't mind luthiers experimenting with stuff like fanned frets/multiscale or special electronics but your picture seems like a gimmick that would get old quick and not be very easy to play.
>>63779639
Scales
just kidding, scales are useless :)
>>63779673
Don't bother they're just a meme.
>>63779639
Chords. I taught myself based on knowledge of other string instruments and can play melodies like a motherfucker but can't improv/solo for shit.
Sup /mu/ I'm looking to get started in guitar playing. Need a guitar and an amp recommendation.
Budget: $1200
Music: Rock and Jazz but anything really.
My hands are pretty small but I'm not sure if that matters.
>>63779602
what's different on a baritone guitar?
>>63779639
I wish I knew how to practice properly.
>>63779768
I'm biased, but I really enjoy Eastwood guitars. I like the unique looks on them and love playing them. But if you're going for something more traditional, get a nice strat or tele.
Or just find parts you like and frankenstein them together and make your own personal guitar. idk about amp recs

>>63779602
I'd rather get a 7 string, same benefit but you keep the higher strings.
And Baritone guitars tend to be priced the same way.
>>63779777
Lower tuning and longer scale, they're around 27/28" as opposed to 24.75"/25.5" on a regular guitar
>>63779777
longer scale, therefore better for low tunings (usually a 4th lower)
>>63779768
for a starter guitar, I'd say start off cheap like getting a CV or VM Squier. You have to start learning what you like in guitars before you go buy an expensive one.

That's a contraption allowing you to switch between 12 and 6 strings on the fly. It's an interesting design but you can see why it would not be reliable at all.
>>63779979
Don't you fucking dare touch that Airline. Put it on the Dean like the other anon said.
>>63779731
But I gotta, they so smooth.
>>63780213
why not the Airline? the Town and Country models also come with a deluxe version that has a Bigsby already on it. Mine is just the standard
>>63779653
Which would you have gotten?
>>63779107
These are two hundred. You'd have to buy speakers as well and I'd rip the logo off. Used Orange 212 cabs look to be just over 400.
Unloaded and unfinished cabs go for like 150 if you're not afraid of a couple hours of diy.
Otherwise burn down craigslist until you find someone selling their 412 or whatever. It's pretty common that cheap cabs will drop to or bellow 100.
>>63780359

Early tube amps had a much different look. That's probably a PA from closer to the 60s. When he spins the controls, none of them do anything except for three that just roll in the same distortion. This suggests to me that there might be a few channels such as an old PA. The stock distortion is more musical than expected. His dirt pedal sounds really decent.
That thing isn't worth much. It looks like crap and if you know enough to build it back up, then you could have just bought a $50 chassis with the tube configuration you're looking for instead.

I swapped one on mine. I got the cab on CL for $240 loaded with SuperLead 80s and then found a V30 on eBay for under $40 shipped (it had to be stolen). $280 and I have the "orange" cab I want at a fraction of the cost.

I only own white fender Jazz basses. An american deluxe Jazz V and a mexican squier series Jazz The mexi is a mid '90s thing, they stopped making them in '95 and started calling them the classic series or something at that point, but that thing is seriously a hidden gem, it's beat to hell and I love it. Both were used, both are awesome. Also, white and black suit me as colours.
>>63783491
I just like is all. I've had a jazz, and I've had a Ric, and I've tried other variations out like Musicmans and PJs and a bunch of Gibsons, nothing really did it for me like a P bass. That said I'd still love to get another Ric eventually and maybe a semihollowbody like the Jack Cassady or the Guild Starfire but for the most part, I just like sticking with a p bass
>>63779166
No, a major triad has the root, major third, and fifth. A minor triad has the root, minor third, and fifth. There's very little occasion to play the major and minor thirds simultaneously, because they're one semitone apart.
>>63783570
What about a Peavey T40? Or a Gibson Grabber?
>>63783491

>>63784295
Independent luthiers because they have time and aren't greedy giant companies.
>>63784295

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z71MNmi5Jh0
>>63784322
you cannot reliably say this because there are likely tons of terrible independent luthiers.
>>63784295
American Fenders imo
>>63784340
>>63784467
and why
>>63784295
long answer: usually smaller workshops and individual luthiers with a good rep. because if you have the money, they can find a place for it to go in your guitar. You want this colour, and tonewood combo? Awesome, you want me to carve a zombie biting lincoln's dick on the headstock inlay? rad. As long as you're paying, the specifics are really up to you.
Short answer? Whatever guitar speaks to you and is within your price point. I'm about to look at a first act parlor guitar for $25 CAD. Sure, it's a crap guitar, but whatever goes wrong with it, I can fix and improve on - this includes re-building the entire guitar.
>>63784542
I guess it's just preference but I like the tonal quality and the range of switches that comes with the offset models. However in terms of the Tele and Strat, I like the versatility of them since you can play almost anything on them
>>63784295
y'know, perfection has been reached ages ago as far as guitars with basic features go. This is kinda the wrong question because so many aspects of build quality mean fuckall. Who has the best guitar designs is probably a better question. Because really, guitars are adjustable. Frets can and have to be leveled.

I'm pretty sure the guy who made the video was serious, as sad as that is. Honestly a lot of the rhetoric in that video isn't any worse than you can expect from most gibson owners who object to copies. They seem to believe that there's some intangible quality about gibsons that make it impossible for any copy to measure up (unless it costs more, because clearly gibsons have the best value as well as quality).

>>63785219
from where i stand the main reason to own a gibson is for looks and as a sort of status symbol
>>63785403
the only people that think gibsons last forever without repair are the people that barely play them. Let's face it, Gibsons have the smallest frets in the business. I mean, the new high performance series even advertise it. Something like, "new smaller frets improve intonation because the string has nowhere to go." Gibsons need more maintenance that other guitars because they pull this crap.
>>63785490
cull your autism please
>>63785620
I've never found a Gibson I enjoyed playing. They're good for that dadrock bluesy overdrive sound but that's not what I'm interested in. Give me a Strat or a Tele any day.
>>63785632
>"new smaller frets improve intonation because the string has nowhere to go."
You obviously need that when some of your guitars don't even have a proper bridge and just a piece of bent metal.
>>63785723
Humbuckers don't mean you can only play with gain, as much as Gibsons are filled with problems, versatility isn't really really something they lack, you can play almost everything with them.
>>63779673
they're shit, get a tele
can we stop referring to versatility in terms of what you can play with a certain pickup or guitar? Let's be honest you can play everything with any pickup just fine. It's a useless way to use the term. Calling a p-bass or a telecaster "incredibly versatile" is just stupid. And I say that as someone who owns both. On the other hand, calling an alembic bass or a p-rail pickup versatile is undeniable.
Here is my rig
I'm looking to buy a combo amp but can't decide to go tube or solid state. My budgett is $1000.
I mainly play jazz and folk, so ideally I like something something warm, bassy, no onboard effects, and isn't too heavy to haul around.
>>63785013
You didn't answer his question though, shitlord.
>>63785839
I don't like the feel of a Gibson, I don't like the bridge and tailpiece that falls off when you change strings, I don't like the dull middly sound of humbuckers. Sure, they can be versatile, you can knock nails in with a screwdriver if you want. I just find they're the wrong sound for the music that I want to play.

How long is your band's set?
I'm of the belief that local bands (especially openers) shouldn't be playing over 20 minutes. 10-15 is ideal imo
>>63786142
if you don't use dirt at all solid state is king. It's cheaper, too, so it shouldn't cost you $1000 unless your getting something huge.
>>63786002
This is correct. A guitar with different types of pickups at different distances from the bridge will give the player more flexibility of stock tones. Some players get every job done with one pickup.
>>63786258

Anyone got recommendations for easy-ish to learn songs that are impressive and will make me feel proud of myself?
I think the toughest song I know is FCPREMIX, and I'm trying to learn other songs I like, but it's mostly super hard stuff that takes months to learn a single riff, and thus can often leave me feeling quite disheartened.
I never see Danelectro guitars posted or discussed on here. Why? Do people not like them? (I've never played one, always just thought they looked interesting)
>>63786673

Independent or small luthiers with many years of practice and attention to detail.
Some smaller companies like Mayones, blackmachine or demoness guitars are specialized top of everything.
For production instruments: Suhr (at least they used to be. don't know if they still are), Ernie Ball Music Man is definitely there.
>>63786142

A dark brown basswood body baritone Tele Thinline with black burst and white/cream binding, Alnico II Pro on the neck (not sure about what I shall put on the bridge yet, all I know is that it will be a humbucker), ebony fretboard (might use just black stain as I'm on a budget) with similar binding with the body, 3 or 5-ply wood neck (maple as the base material, not sure about the second wood), inverse angled Tele-style headstock with a thin piece of basswood glued on it, making it look like a one-piece neck, black burst with binding on it. And some creative scarf joint that "crosses" with the neck ply. Not sure how to do that but feels like that's the most durable as it has more glue surface than the casual scarf joint and I can't even imagine it cracking, pic related. And also, a black pickguard, something like a classical Tele but with a small cut so the F-hole can fit. And a tune-o-matic bridge with a string-thru or a trapeze tailpiece. All hardware will be chrome. And will put some vintage-style tone and vol. knobs on her too.
Not sure if I should build a set, neck-thru or a bolt on neck. And might add a tummy cut if I see it necessary.
Will post build pics when I just can get started with it. At the moment looking for the body wood.

I'm 19 and have been working in retail for 3 years now and have 20k saved up. Bought a sweet tele, and going to uni for computer engineering in a few months.
You want to find a career that'll also let you have a part time job apart from it? Not sure if that's what you mean but I don't see why you would stress yourself out with that much work.

Oversized cabs are cool for adding bass. They're all just boxes and they're not being tuned like ported bass cabs. There's something to be said for how sturdy the box is and its involvement, but I'm not sure what.
so say i have a 100w head
and i want to make a cab
does each speaker have to be 100w or do they have to be at least 100 added up?
i should have paid attention in high school physics
>>63789746
Normally cabs are rated for double the power since many amps are rated rms clean power. So the amps can and will deliver well above their wattage.
Power is shared across the system unless you only hook up one speaker.
>>63789200
No idea, I haven't tried the Tremolux. To me the Vibroverb sounds like a warmer and louder Deluxe Reverb. It is a 2x10 though, so a bit heavier. Perfect for clean jazz tones.
Really though, don't overlook those Polytones. You can get a hell of a lot of amp for around $300. Don't let the price fool you. I have some nice tube amps and I still prefer to gig with the polytone since it handles pitch/ambient effects really well for more experimental jazz playing.
>>63789746
They should all add up to 100W. But unless you plan on running your head on full all the time you can safely go down to about 75W RMS. And mind the impedance too; 4 speakers should each run 16 ohm for 4 ohm total impedance or 32 ohm for 8 ohm total. For 2 they should each be 8 ohm for 4 ohm total and 16 ohm for 8 ohm total
>>63790010

>>63788629
Go for a Squier precision bass, as for an amp I think any will do, just get something used.
I plan on buying this and four 2.5" speakers and making a miniature 4 - 2.5" cabinet with a mini 15w amp head.

you could add twenty 2.5 inch speakers, you still won't get any bass or low mid response out of them, adding lots of shit speakers together does not make one good speaker

Imo you should get a modeling amp. It'll let you experiment with a bunch of different styles and let you find out what you want as far as effects and amp set ups go. The tiny terror isn't quite that versatile. Just my .02.
Other than that, it's a good start. Good choice of a guitar. Epiphones are very rarely a complete pos, and at the mid price range you're at, you'll get a good instrument. Check out MIM fender guitars at that price range as well if you aren't set on humbuckers/les paul shape. Good luck!

for $420 you can do better. Get an agile, the fret work is better. At that price I'm pretty sure you can get a neck through if you want it.

an agile? pfft. he could get 4 different cheapo rondos with that kind of cash.
>>63791757
>How's this setup for a beginner?
It's pretty good, actually. I'd still get a Fender Mustang II amp.
Hell, with some luck and patience and might even get a Bugera V55 tube amp, which is infinitely better than either.
Also, don't get an Agile if you're not prepared to deal with fixing factory defects. Go for the Epi, especially if buying new so you get the warranty.

but really guys we're talking about agile, not the lower brands on the same site. I guess not having a separate website for sx/agile like squire/fender does is that harmful? Cmon, the only way you can shit on agile is by shitting on rondo. Agile guitars are good.
>>63793108
I'd rather have an Epiphone warranty if I was just starting out.
>>63793108
>Agile guitars are good.
If you're lucky. Agile's quality control is terrible, unlike Epiphone's and other big brands. People complaining about shitty factory problems with Agiles are all over the internet.
If you want to take the gamble and you know enough to fix a ton of stuff, fine, but don't recommend them to a beginner.

learn how to form chords. They stack in 3rds the order determines the quality. Make sure you know what the bass is playing
Is there any reason why I couldn't build an electric guitar with a classical-style neck and fretboard? Zero-radius, relatively wide, etc.
Do they make pickups for abnormal spacing like this or can you buy individual alnico magnets to make your own?
>>63795575
You can, it would probably just play like shit.
If you can make a guitar you can make your own pickups with the pole spacing you want.

walnut neck-through SG in a natural finish over a subtle dark stain (just to get the grain to pop), with three humbuckers, locking tuners, a hardtail bridge (the Schaller Hannes would be a good one), dark roasted maple fingerboard, no inlays, and switching to allow any combination of pickups on/off, arbitrary splitting, and series/parallel wiring.
>>63796413
it's seen two veteran techs in two different states. honestly, it's just fragile at this point. the dude that I bought it from already toured with it a bunch, modded it, replaced the tolex & grille & knobs on it, added and removed switches...it sounds lovely when it's functioning but I've had to add screws to the chassis just to keep it together.
>>63796404
thanks. it's a bummer for sure. I'd recommend the peavey classic series to anybody. I became the owner of a classic 50w 2x12 a year or so ago and compared to my Deville it's built like a tank. the cleans are great and the lead channel requires less knob tweaking to sound good in a pinch.

To do something innovative, it only has to feel original to you. People will idolize the strangest things as innovative. People will say nirvana songs like polly are genius.
You will find soon enough that when you get into a creative mindset, every once in a blue moon, it's hard NOT to be original. Just write some music, and play it for someone. It'll be the first time they've ever heard that in their life.
>>63797954
Life is pretty much just a series of shitty things that happen to you one after the other. The sooner you accept that and start making the most of the brief moments in between the shitty ones the better.
Nobody has the perfect life but there are millions of people out there who would literally kill for your comfortable existence so keep that in mind next time you want to wallow in your own self pity.

>>63786258
>10-15 minute set
That's short as fuck. Almost every single opening band set time for shows around here is 25 minutes. If your band doesn't suck and has a sizable following, promoters will often give you a 45-minute 'local headliner' spot before the touring bands play. There are also a bunch of grungy bars and little venues that will give bands hour-long sets to fill time while people spend all night getting drunk.
My band has just about over an hour of material, so we can play for however long the promoter gives us
>>63798276
good for you
honestly we have 20 min of material, we've played longer sets but just for a guy who's a friend, and in that case we'll just play pixies covers or whatever. Once we were playing extra because the next band was late, and we just noodled around in e minor for 15 minutes. Well, not that that went over well or anything. It was just a bar.
>>63797954
I just keep trying to learn new things and apply new concepts. Why would I worry about what other people think when my own knowledge is so incomplete? I'm very competitive with myself and other musicians so I'm constantly pushed to keep doing more, keep getting better.

Okay, so after a year of playing I've decided to really cement my playing in with a solid attempt at improving my technique.
first: what's the good and bad when it comes to anchoring the picking hand with my pinky and ring finger? Any reason why I should learn to 'hover' my hand over the guitar?
second: is it fine to stretch out the pinky in weird ways on my fretting hand? like when doing large stretches, or should I always have my pinky curled like if I was playing classical guitar?
