Why not build a tube preamp and SS power amp, plenty of SS power amp designs on the internet and a tube preamp is really straightforward. You can even run tubes on low voltage and they'll still produce a better overdrive sound than most SS amps

Anyone played jazz with a Ibanez? not artcore series i mean
I want to play some kind of prog/jazz fusion with one bc they're comfy
>find new band
>want to write songs that sound just like them
>repeat cycle
Current band: The Smiths
How do I stop wanting to do this and write songs that don't sound like one particular artist? I've written at least 40-50 songs, probably another 20-30 or so in various states of completion and then another 30-50+ riffs/ideas as well.
I can do it, but too often I'm gripped by this strange mental state that I subconsciously get myself into.. being that I just want to write like the latest band I got into. I feel like the only way I can stop it is to stop listening to that band altogether but it's hard when you find an awesome band you haven't listened to before.
>>63799282
Go for it. I don't see a reason why not.
Get some new pickups if the old ones are some Kerry King -tier. Or get an Axe FX II so you can get any tone you want.

Listen to a greater variety of music to draw influence from maybe, that's what worked for me. I used to get into one band at a time and devour all their material over a few weeks or a month or so, now I listen to far more music though and hop between artists and styles a lot more freely with my listening as well as with my playing. Makes it easier to mix those styles into something more my own.

Yeah, uses them as fashion accessories.
>>63799293
Do you play in a band or by yourself?
When I write music for my band I know what I can and can not write, for example if I've been listening to a band that doesn't match my bands music style I know that I can't take too much influence from them and have to adjust it to the style of music my band plays
I can see that if you play by yourself and don't have a specific style style or genre to match you can easily take too much influence. Maybe you need a band or a project that has a decided genre so you can focus on writing for that
When I'm practising I sometimes intentionally try to match a style of a band I'm listening just for the sake of learning to write music that's not the same as my band's

I'm confused, I have this exercise from my bass-teacher, it's about accentuating certain notes while playing. You do that by playing them forte, I get that, but how would you accentuate something "long" or "short"? The actual note length is defined already, how do I accentuate something short? Do I try to dampen the string after the accentuation or what?
>>63801540
you accentuate the note but don't sustain it
>>63801410
No matter how you play, you won't get a jangly sound out of a practice amp with a Les Paul, people do bother too much with their "tone-search", but saying everything comes from how you play is just as stupid.
I sometimes see little numbers right besides 'normal sized' numbers in my tabs.
How are you supposed to play them? And what are these called exactly (I know only that these fall under 'ornaments')?
So far I've seen two ways in yt videos:
a very quick hammer on/pull off
or
a quick slide from the 'small' to the 'normal' note

In what sense? Cables act as lowpass filters, you probably want a decent cable if you run it over a long distance and you want proper shielding if you use it on stage. That makes sense and doesn't have to cost 20$/m either.
Cables that are "voiced" for rock or blues? Yeah, that's bullshit. I think Monster does that.
>>63802170
>again, swallowing the advertising bullshit
before you saw them advertised, did you ever once think hmmm, I'd better switch to a blues voiced cable for this track?
>>63802229

>>63802229
Nigga whut u talking about
>>63802170
Cable capacitance is usually around 6pF/meter. If you calculate the 3dB dropoff point for a 5 meter cable with a 1Meg input impedance then it's up in the hearing range of bats
>>63802229
See: >>63802258
And re-read my post. Cables have a resistance and they have capacitance, they act like a low-pass filter and a poorly made cable could change your sound.
As it stands, the vast majority of instrument cables, even very cheap ones, are good enough up to 10+ meters, so while playing in a practice room with your mates it won't make a lick of a difference what brand you use.
If you need longer cables you should check however what their capacitance is and whether or not that could become a problem. Shielding is another issus that'd warrant higher quality cables, as well as mechanical stability.
>>63802336
I'm fully aware, but very crappy cables over a long distance might actually be problematic. I just want people to understand that, while the whole "voiced" cables thing is bullshit, there still is a difference in some cases. "Cables don't matter" as a blanket statement is simply not true.

Where do you live?
Just called my closest guitar shop to order a Squier VM Jazzmaster since i want a guitar again (have had a break with guitars).
They sounded like they went through a lot of stuff to be able to do that in the phone, so i'll probably end up buying it no matter what.
Someone owns it? People on the internet says it's good quality for the money so i'm hopeful.
I don't understand music, so I came up with a really cool sounding rhythm line right? It has 5 repeating bars, with three notes each, played as triplets to fill each measure. It goes like
E
B
G-------0---------4----------4-------5---------7
D-----2---------2---------1-------2---------4
A---2---------2---------2-------3---------5
E
Now, in what hellish key is this damn song that I cannot for the love of all holy make a good melody that follows it, I thought it was in Cmaj but the D# in the 3rd bar throws me so off. Am I making some sort of key change or something? I'm lost.

>Em doesn't have a D#
Kek
Gather round elec guitar kids, time for a theory lesson!
D# is the leading tone to E, in E minor, our chords from top to bottom are structured like this i-iiDim-III-iv-V-VI-VII
>why is this
Our V chord is always major regardless of whether you're in a major or minor key.
That leading tone is what indicates to us that we've left the relative major and are now in a minor key.
See this example
Here we start in F major and modulate to D minor(our relative minor)
The first two Chords are out I chord, followed by our V. The third chord is where we modulate. If we didn't see that C# again in the piece then we could assume it was a one off major III chord which would be "borrowed"(though usually that only happens with parallel minors), but since we see it multiple times we've modulated to D minor and the chord is actually our V chord in D minor. From there we move to our new tonic Dm, our i chord.

Good luck, bro. The key to starting fingerstyle is to practice slow and steady.
Anyone else own an AC30 and do you experience a constant hum? I feel like it's always had one but my bandmates are always talking about how annoying it is now that we use in-ear monitors. I'm not sure if replacing the tubes will makes a real difference or not, but it's definitely noticeable when I'm at a volume that's necessary to be heard over 4 other musicians. I've pretty much always got my noise suppressor on so when I'm not playing there's no signal coming from the guitar. I've had it for about 2 years now.
Should I look into replacing the tubes? I just looked at them and they seemed fine. The 12AX7s looked a bit dull though. Pic related.

>A guitar is not a fucking fashion accessory
It literally fucking is. Literally the only thing that matter in a guitar is its guts and electronics, and on high end guitars those are all virtually identical and you're going to get the same level of performance you would out of anything else.
Most guitarists choose their body style/brand/aesthetics before even thinking about the actual performance of the guitar

>>63807894
Some higher end guitars do have distinctive electronics.
American Deluxes/Elites have S-1 Switching and a couple of extra modes (HB active bypassing everything else with a push button).
Gibsons have a fuckton of variations in pull knobs. I'm not entirely familiar with them.
EBMM have active preamps with included boosts and the Petrucci models have a piezo.
Playability is huge man, not only the electronics. Your logic is the basis for the reasoning that I can buy a loaded American Elite pickguard, put it in a Bullet Strat and it would be quite the same.

>>63807302
The heaters in most tube amps are just alternating current coming out of the power transformer. This 60 hz hum is noticeable in the first stages of the preamp.
There are a few ways to clean this up.
-dc elevate the tube filaments. The hum turns into just a constant inaudible dc leakage between filaments and cathode. Very simple to add.
-use clean wiring lead dress (helps, see pic)
-provide instead a clean dc supply to tube filaments (or at least the first 1 or two tubes)
>>63809193
Mods are kind of a gamble. They generally don't help the resale and can make or break an instrument. If done right, it's like someone putting more money and crafting into the instrument for you.
Playability is 75% fretwork and setup, 15% having the strings, string spacing, and neck shape/finish you like, 5% amount of neck whip, and 5% balance. Your mileage may vary a bit.
What does craftsmanship do for you? Makes it a bit easier to get the above things. But not by a lot!

>>63811160
>on some more expensive guitars
and some cheaper ones. Look at music man. Their high end guitars often come with bare oiled necks. That's generally considered the smoothest finish and it's also really cheap. On the other hand you have cheap brands offering lacquer and polyurethane necks. I think the one least often found on cheap guitars is nitro.
>>63811371
it's fool proof. Even if you fuck up you can just sand the whole thing off. But the best way is to use 1000 grit and just keep sanding as needed over time. When you play your guitar you'll be polishing it so you'll need to keep removing that sheen. If you use a lower grit this will happen less but in my opinion the look and feel of 1000 grit (or thereabouts) is worth it.
>>63811642
Sure. I have cheap guitars that I love, I have expensive that I love as well.
On expensive guitars you do pay for things such as aesthetics, exclusivity, limited editions big brand models, rare woods that don't affect much etc. Guitars are also a fashion accessory and collectible item. That's worth a lot to some people.
Also, if a more expensive guitars makes you think it's better and makes you more confident and makes you play better, than it is a better guitar, even if it's just psychological.
People mad about other people making and buying expensive guitars are either narrow minded immature people or jealous.

I agree. I stopped being bothered by some guy's wall of les pauls a long time ago. I gotta say though, the opposite is just as bad. It's terrible when people with expensive guitars shit on cheap guitars, especially when a lot of work has gone into those guitars.
Sure, I can understand getting annoyed when somebody shows up with a crap guitar and starts comparing it to a gibson. 90% of the time they are trying to start a fight anyway. But the other situation where somebody has poured effort into making a guitar into a perfectly playing machine, spent time picking their favorite pickups out of the hundreds of choices, perfected their electronics, and then some asshole comes along and says, "it'll never be as good as my fender." "Nothing you can do can make up for the craftmanship of USA." That's pretty insulting to someone's skills and effort.

Okay, so after a year of playing I've decided to really cement my playing in with a solid attempt at improving my technique.
first: what's the good and bad when it comes to anchoring the picking hand with my pinky and ring finger? Any reason why I should learn to 'hover' my hand over the guitar?
second: is it fine to stretch out the pinky in weird ways on my fretting hand? like when doing large stretches, or should I always have my pinky curled like if I was playing classical guitar?

Anchoring your hand makes your right hand more accurate, lets you learn instinctively where each string is. If you don't anchor your hand then you've got no reference for where your fingers are relative to the strings.
>>63812217
>Any reason why I should learn to 'hover' my hand over the guitar?
It's always good to have an anchor, though some salty traditionalists will say this is bad form. You should anchor the base of your hand/palm before the bridge and switch to your pinky when necessary, especially when picking on skipping strings, which requires accuracy.
Tons of extremely good guitarists do it, nothing wrong with it.

>>63806796
Is there anybody out there was my first
>>63812348
It's not really about bad form or whatever, but I find anchoring with the pinky extremely awkward, it's not stable and doesn't give you any more dexterity.
You should find your own technique anyway, nobody has the same body as another guitarist (except twins).
Personally for single note stuff or anything under three string chords, I mute my strings with the right palm and the left-over left fingers so that nothing rings out (which sounds terrible with high output pickups and distortion), and for strumming chords I kinda change the angle and take a more floating-like picking hand.
It's also a matter of which guitar you're using, on something without contours like a Tele or a LP Jr. I probably would have the same approach.
