Listened to the next 2 CDs of my Rachmaninoff box.

CD 3 had The Isle Of The Dead, which is probably my favorite so far from what I heard next to the second piano concerto. Mellow and picturesque. I was slightly disappointed that the vocalise had no vocals in this version. Why? I don't know.

The third symphony was pleasant with several interesting motifs. I'll need to give it another listen, didn't stick quiet well.

The other CD was a collection of performances from a Rachmaninoff - Kreisler duets, where they played 3 sonatas by Beethoven, Schubert and Grieg. I liked the Beethoven one and the closing movement of Grieg's sonata. The duet sounds fine, but I didn't like Kreisler's playing. Felt too soft for my taste. Then again, what the hell do I know lolz.

Hey. Just listened to Haki R. Madhubuti. I think you'd like it. It's some very inspired spiritual jazz in the same vein as Pharoah Sanders or David S. Ware, but performed by a larger ensemble and also includes some spoken word / poetry elements over the music. Haki is an activist, poet and writer actually, so I might check out his poetry.

>Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson - Winter in America
I think I prefer angry young Scott-Heron (Small Talk at 125th) and wise old man (I'm new here) Scott-Heron over this. Nonetheless, there are some pretty good electric piano arrangements on here. The addition of a flute on The Bottle was nice and made this my favorite track. The proto-rap on H2O-Gate was also very interesting. 6/10

>>63272160
Hey Dogwander I figure you are the right person to rec me something similar to Melt (the Chippendale, Gustafsson and Pupillo collab)?

Also, do I have a faulty version of At Folsom Prison if the sound skips a few times at the beginning of the first track?

>Hey Dogwander I figure you are the right person to rec me something similar to Melt (the Chippendale, Gustafsson and Pupillo collab)?
Probably not the best person, but I'll try to rec some free improv. What did you like the most from it? The sax work, the rough bass guitar or the fast-paced drumming?

>the residents - our finest flowers
so the residents hit their 20th anniversary, and they decide to make a greatest hits album. they start writing down the names for the songs, but one guy projectile vomited all over the list. when they tried picking up the pieces, they saw song names like "blue tongues" and they saw this as an inspiration to make mash ups of their most popular songs for their 20th anniversary. how did this turn out? ok i guess, some songs work really well together and others just dont at all. blue tongues is worth checking out.

>Shiina Ringo - Muzai Moratorium
The debut album of the pop genius. You'll still find your share of adventurous pop melodies, incredible vocal performance and varied instrumentation. It's not on the same level of her following output, not as delicate and precise but it's still the best stuff J-pop rock can offer. The decision to sing some lines in english is questionable.
8/10

>Six Organs of Admittance - Dark Noontide
That was hypnotizing and beautiful folk. The really cool eastern influence and drone stuff create this very enchanting atmosphere. I especially loved the first song, it really felt like I was travelling to a mystical place.

That part's supposed to symbolize what the product does on skin, not skin itself. I feel like it's something that should've been taken into consideration during the design process. Then again, they managed to fuck everything with hyphenation on some boxes.

>>63273114
Dunno really, I guess they're maybe thinking like "green because it restores your skin" and "blue because it's cooling" or some shit?

Yeah, I think it's a really difficult line of work, but at the same time lots and lots of fun (at least if you're part of a bureau, fuck freelance). I'm kind of disappointed that my gf wants to go into printing instead of the more design oriented fields that her education opens up.

Honestly, a lot of the great music from when I was a kid was still in my collection. The first album I ever listened to was Gorillaz - Gorillaz. I mostly redownloaded terrible music from 8th to 10th grade. Scene kid stuff and babby's first "indie" music. Very strange and extraordinarily embarrassing to listen to some of it; makes me visibly cringe and pause some songs.

I'm laying in bed, but I think I will repost my musical journey idea tomorrow, with plans to do regular updates on my progress.

Gonna have to adopt a trip for those reports, apologies in advance.

This talk just reminded me that today is the final date of entry for a poster competition I planned on joining, but I still haven't gotten the material I'd need (puzzle pieces and coloured paper). Shame. The other entries are literally terrible, so it feels like I'd have a decent chance.

>>63272431
This was garabe. Kora playing was on point but the rest was stale as old bread.

>>63273343
Because I don't trust people enough to invite. I've "lost" more invites (due to losing elite class) than I've invited people.

Problem is that printing is a really, really difficult industry to penetrate. Getting a job is a fucking hell. She'll likely have to resort to doing free apprenticeship for quite a while if she's to get anything.
>>
>>63273503

>>
>>63273707
not a lot
>>
>>63273741
Well, yes, it is. She actually went to visit a printing company a little while ago and asked how to get into the business, and everyone there was just like "Actually, no idea". Most people in the industry now have been it for many years, so they don't know how to get into it in a more modern context. A lot of it has to do with the equipment in use - printing presses and stuff that is old, has little documentation, and few people outside the company could possibly know how it works. It's a Catch 22, you have to be in the industry to know it, and you have to know the industry to get in.

Not sure why people go into the industry, but I guess they read about it and figure out it seems fun, much like my gf did.

Album of the Week
>KEDA - Hwal
This is a collab between E'Joung-Ju playing the Korean geomungo and producer Mathias Delplanque. The geomungo is played by striking the strings with a stick, which gives it a lot of interesting character. The electronics create a dark ambiance that meshes nicely with the geomungo. It's a very interesting listen, especially the later tracks.

Others of note:
>Space Captain - In Memory EP
This is a really nice jazzy electronic EP, one of my favorites in a long time. I'll be watching for more from this group

>Mamak Khadem - The Road
This features tracks of many different styles from this Iranian singer. The best tracks are those in the style of Balkan brass bands. This led me to check out Boban Markovic Orkester which is a lot of fun. It reminds me a bit of Mexican brass bands like Banda El Recodo. Anyway, I had my brass band fix this week

I finally listened to the classical oud album and it is, of course, very good.

Thanks to s for the rec of Francis Bebey - that is really nice.

If you have a problem with horns (I think a lot of people used to other genres do), I'd recommend piano trios with a drummer and a bassist like:

I don't know if I necessarily have a problem with horns, I played a bit of sax in the past but I definitely find a lot of it uninteresting. The closest I've come to loving a jazz record is with the drumming (and vocals) on We Insist! so I'm definitely listening to Money Jungle. What vocal and drumming centred records are there?

And I can't really tell you precisely why I've not liked jazz, it just hasn't clicked with me. I guess I just find quite a bit of jazz aimless, like it's not particularly going anywhere. I'm probably a massive pleb for thinking that but whatever.

>>63277660
Already heard We Insist! and liked quite large parts of it as I've just said above here

it's a bit out there so it might not be great for getting into jazz, but check it out.

Smokestack has some pretty great drumming

and cool about We Insist! it was the first jazz record I ever got into and still remains as one of my favs. The first domino has fallen, you'll get into the whole genre eventually
