What's everyone up to on this beautiful Saturday afternoon?
I just moved into my new apartment yesterday and I'm currently moving around furniture and stuff while listening to Deerhunter.
It's nice/10.

>Television - Adventure

I can't believe this is the same band that made Marquee Moon.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not mad at them because they decided to calm things down and round up the compositions a bit; in fact, I don't dislike this aspect at all, and I also think that it was a much better choice instead of copying the sound that they had on their first album.
So, even if I get why they decided to take it a little bit more slowly here, I don't get why they decided to simplify things up: where are the fantastic groovy drums? The rhythmic and kinda funky bass? Where are the jazzy guitars? And the fantastic combination of totally different elements to make incredibly cohesive harmonies?
Can someone tell me, because I can't find them anywhere.

Still, this is definitely not a bad or average album: the guitar work is more often than not still pretty impressive, "Foxhole" and "Careful" are really good songs with fantastic choruses, and overall this is really enjoyable, also thanks to the variety of the songwriting, that isn't really impressive, but it does its job right.

Remember when, in Marquee Moon, the guitars (that didn't have almost anything to do with each other) combined with the unconventional bass and the spastic drums to create fantastically unique verses, choruses, solos and so on? Here we sadly don't have that, but the individual melodies are pretty original and well written, so I didn't disliked them at all. I also liked the presence of organs and keys, since it contributed to the sound a lot.

In conclusion, this is an above average guitar-driven rock album, with pretty solid songwriting. If you put this in its context, you will be disappointed, since this is a step down in quality from Marquee Moon; but, musically, it's very enjoyable: I already listened to this 3 times and counting, and I can definitely see myself returning to this in the future.

The variation on the theme of Paganini was very interesting because of how the tone color shifts throughout each bit.

The 2 concertos were not as exciting as the second and third, but the fourth one was very ambitious. I think the coupling of these two concertos makes sense because of their extensive rewrite history. I would like to hear the original versions of these concertos to see what exactly was changed.

The sound quality wasn't bad. The variations seem to be coming from an earlier source than the concertos, hence the shiitier quality. It's more than listenable though.

I hate when people compare every single female art pop singer to Björk but this time it's justified. This album is a really cool combination of glitchy electronic and Noriko's great vocals.

Hey /blog/. I hosted a LOTR marathon yesterday, extended editions of course, with a drinking game. Had an absolute blast, and some people I met at a club the day before showed up (I drunkenly invited them Thursday night), so I got to get to know some new friends which is always nice. We started watching at 15:00, and finished around 02:30 I think. After that one girl stayed and we watched The Thing (because it's fucking great).

I'm a bit hungover and tired as all fucking hell. I need a music recommendation for this feel.

If your from the fedora tipping persuasion this might not be for you but I would say give this a try because this is cool as hell. Sure it sounds that all this was recorded at the local community church but this shit is real. Its preachy music but this also speaks deeply about the community from this music is coming from and about the era that it was made. Dipping into genre's such as blues, soul, funk, and rock, making this a real buffet of music I wouldn't otherwise consider. So give this a chance, there is some real gems here.

Dolphin - Tкaни
[2001]

I think I've seen somewhere in "make your dream genre" threads a handful people talking about wanting a mix of shoegaze/noise rock and hip hop. This is the closest i've found that reaches the definition, and it also is completely made in Russia!
The idea of it being russian rap turned me off and my expectations weren't exceeded. On the instrumental part it's ok and sometimes, but if i'm really pushing it, quite memorable; the vocals instead are what they are. I think there are a lot of people that would enjoy this much much more than me, starting with for example Dogwander. This feels like a record he would like.

It's marketed as jazz, but it's a bit wonky. They work in electronic and rock elements, but it's pretty short, so it comes off as a bit schizophrenic.

I enjoyed it plenty, but that's my best guess as to why others don't like it.

And enjoy Paavo. That one's a gem.

Jan-Hein Strop_Auteur_500x500.png
218 KB, 500x500
>Jahn-Hein Strop - Auteur

Very ordinary album by Jahn-Hein Strop, released posthumously by his son Frederick, who chose to be left uncredited for minor production work. Only his step-father's name appears on the cover, and it's very much his own (including the cover art itself, incidentally, based on a 1924 photographic self-portrait, a blow-up of his typewriter, and title set in the font he helped develop alongside Max Miedinger). Though some might find the less experimental works from his catalogue more accessible and less politicized, particularly those from his Kabbalah Era (1930-'32), for the devotee, 'a rice bowl and a handgun' ("10 Grenades for Rodolfo Graziani/ Yekatit 12") may indeed be all it takes to appreciate the 'heavenly hell' of this record.
The title track incorporates the rhythm guitar and proto-rap lyrics JHS pioneered, slowly dissolving into gaps left by the much-worn phonograph cylinders, expertly distorted by shadow-producer Frederick into a straight jam. An improvised-feeling riff is underscored by the damaged recording of the crackling of the flames of Smyrna and the wailing of the Greek mothers, and the sound of what may be a young JHS crying is interspersed with the cackling laughter of an older, post-revolutionary journalist JHS recorded in his floating studio in the English Channel. Other highlights include a highly charged conversation with Hamo Ohanjanyan, in exile in Cairo, about the effect of Sovietization on the industrialization of Armenia, and a jazzy cover of Irving Berlin's Cheek to Cheek.

So drop got me listening to the MBV early EPs. In a way I can't quite pin, they remind me of The Smiths, but that might just be a trope of the whole jangle pop genre from what I can tell.

Sunny Sundae Smile was pretty good noise pop, if a little unremarkable. Not sure what to rate it yet.

Jazz stuffy:

>The Art Tatum-Ben Webster Quartet - s/t (by S)

The sax here was definitely the standout for me, but the piano was very pleasant too.

7/10

>Bill Evans & Jim Hall - Undercurrent (by ∆^3)

One of the best piano-based jazz albums I've heard, the guitar fits very well. I'll be returning to this very often, thank ∆^3.

8/10

>Eric Dolphy - Other Aspects (by Co)

Very different from Dolphy's other work. Best track is "Improvisations and Tukras", if the rest would've been bad, the album would still be worth listening too because of that amazing track (but the rest isn't bad!)

7-8/10

Sophie - L.O.V.E. (Baby Zionov Remix)
[2016]

Baby Zionov takes the already great song, speeds it up, adds an hardcore beat and a buildup and calls it a day. It's fun how all the sections of the original song are well separated and distinguished here. Clocking at two minutes and almost a half, it's impossible to get bored of it, and blasting this with headphones WILL make your head spin. Really good in it's occasions but I'm not gonna give it a lot of credit.

Today's album was
>A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders
Definitely more chilled out and funky than yesterday's listen. And in my opinion: better, too.
This album is a phenomenal blend of jazz and abstract hip-hop that flows fluently from track to track. I thought that the production was really impressive — smooth and perfected beats that are a bit more electronically oriented than The Low End Theory; perfected but still complementing the raw feelings delivered by both rappers. The combination of backing track and rapping is probably at its best in Steve Biko, but remains consistently effective throughout the rest of the record, with certain great moments in which the instrumentation of the beat references the words of the lyrics. This instrumentation is usually of two parts: some of the most artistic programmed drums I have heard on a hip-hop album, and dark but still danceable bass lines. The music has its expected relaxed mood, and the themes about it represent a worry-free lifesyle, so the album is pretty much consistent in its theme. Q-Tip and Phife rap confidently, playing throw-and-catch with their verses, effortlessly delivered to build up the sophisticated cool of the album.

The full review is on rateyourmusic, but it's not my best.

I don't think you're ready for anything beyond waifufagging and shitposting on /mu/ if you're willing to dismiss an entire genre based on a few albums that you probably have never taken proper time for. Try actually listening when you put on a jazz record next time. If you already did that, you should at least be able to tell me what exactly it is that you don't like about it. Alternatively, skip any of these things and just end your life like a good boy.

i like a dissenting voice against anything generally loved no matter how good or how well i like it, but it seems like here, it's just you being a pleb
that means, don't try get into jazz starting with its later, less plalatable forms m8, start with vocal jazz, ragtime, swing, cool jazz, that stuff

>>63259081
The first time I listened to A Love Supreme, that's when I was first getting into Jazz, I thought it was boring and uneventful. I think you need to be more acquainted with the genre to understand why it's so perfect. So maybe don't relisten to it yet.

>The Cloisters - s/t
Beautiful, organic ambient music. It's too bad the best stuff on here are the two shorter tracks, the two 15+ minute tracks on here have a tendency to drag on a little, and the longest one of them is probably the weakest. Basically a lot of pretty with not much else to it, althoguh I suppose being "just pretty" is good enough for me. 3.0+

>Xinlisupreme - Tomorrow Never Comes
Starts off with a burst of ass-kicking noise rock, then after that goes in all kinds of directions, from electronic experimental music to straight-up noise. The biggest surprise is the dreamy 12-minute track "Fatal Sisters Opened Umbrella", which is a dreamy 12-minute shoegaze treat. Most of the album's just fine, but the first track and the final two tracks are strong enough to bump it up a fair amount. 3.5-

>Christian Marclay - Records [1981-1989]
Early experimental turntable music, but already a lot more advanced than something like Dennis Duck Goes Disco. The sound collages on here are delicious, featuring lots of samples from pop songs and various kinds of jazz, often accompanied by electronic fuckery. At times it gets pretty spooky! Not everything hits home, but it's a very interesting document and definitely a good listen. 3.5

>Strawberry Switchblade - s/t
It's so sweet! Perfect pop songs, it's like you take the best of 80s synth pop and make it sugary like twee, but add some of the slightly darker elements of Treasure-era Cocteau Twins. So much fun! 4.0

>The Reatards - Teenage Hate
What Oblivians should have been. The bands carry a lot of similarities (nigh inevitable in the somewhat one-dimensional genre of garage punk), but it's the delivery that makes the Reatards better for me. It's that shouty vocal delivery of the young Jay Reatard, that irresistible energy, that crunching lo-fi sound that makes them better than the slightly tamer, more polished Oblivians. Hardly reinvents the wheel, but who gives a shit, it's fun stuff. 3.5

Listening to the new Frankie Cosmos. It's pretty good, very breezy and upbeat. A lot lighter than her debut, catchier as well.

I've been flirting with classical music, but only by way of listening to playlists. I wish old-timey record companies would shell out the bucks to compile the best and concise selections of each composer's greatest music. For all I know, they totally do and I'm not aware of it, but from what I've looked up, there doesn't seem to be in the way I'm looking for. For example, I'd love to get into Liszt but I have no clue what of his music I should listen to, along with whose version of his stuff.

I don't hate jazz, I just don't find it very interesting to listen to apart from the drumming on some records. I can appreciate the musicianship but it's just not something that interests me. Life's too short for me to devote a lot of time listening to a genre that doesn't stir anything in me or to pretend I like that genre. There's enough music out there anyway.

There has been quite a while since I've listened to Coltrane or Mingus so I will seriously listen to them some time soon. Also what "entry level" jazz should I listen to?

For real, a lot of entry level jazz is boring. Kind of Blue, for example, is very pleasant but ultimately inoffensive and unimpressive. The other two "big ones" are A Love Supreme, which really isn't the most immediate record out there (took me a while to love it), whereas The Black Saint is actually just amazing and so expressionistic and theatrical in its approach that I can't begin to grasp why you wouldn't find something interesting in it. It is, in general, the jazz record that seems to be the easiest one to "get" for people who are mostly familiar with rock music, because it's more picturesque/expressionistic and arranged than the standards w/ improvisation that a lot of renowned jazz is known for.

I don't think I know anyone who doesn't care for that album bar jazz purists who aren't into it exactly because they are more concerned with the more typical kinds of jazz. So start liking it, and also try as many kinds of jazz as you can (I'm sure people here are willing to help in giving you a small list of albums that form a good sample of jazz as a whole) before you decide you don't like it. The essentials alone frankly don't suffice in this case.

Maximillian Colby - Discography (2002)
>emo, post-rock

I'm just gonna quote a RYM review because it accurately sums up literally everything I think about this album. "While most of the heavier bits here work quite well, and the attempts at integrating a post-rock sound into hardcore are commendable, the extended instrumental sections they result in aren't terribly interesting and ultimately make the songs feel padded and longer than they need to be. This contributes to making the record's length a detriment. With this much material in one sitting, it's difficult for much to stand out. Best taken in small doses."

Luckily, the heavier bits are /really/ fucking good, very reminiscent of the intensity that's present in the best works by Slint and Unwound. But the post-rock bits are just meandering and utterly disposable. 30-minute album of the emo/post-hardcore bits? Best stuff ever. This comp? Still quite good, but marred by the post-rock.

3.0-

>>63261556
I hope when you're talking about entry level jazz you're not using that as a blanket statement for anything under the bebop, hard bop, Cool, and modal genres. Because there's a lot of fantastic stuff out there. And just because it isn't as challenging, abrasive, or experimental as stuff under the avant or free umbrella, doesn't mean it's 'boring'.
>>
>>63263817
nobody ever implied entry level music was somehow lesser
>>
>>63263817
he pretty much narrowed the "entry-level" category to those three albums he mentioned, which are the top three jazz albums on rym and three of only four on the /mu/ essentials chart.
that said, knowing terminus his tastes definitely take him more to the avant free jazz stuff than the bop and pre-bop styles; it's understandable why he'd find Kind of Blue "boring".

Bobby Beausoleil / The Freedom Orchestra - Lucifer Rising (1980)
>psychedelic rock, film score

Great atmospheric stuff, even if it gets a bit mind-numbingly monotonous. The guitar tone is the real draw here, its psychedelically thick, like molasses mixed with LSD. Its very...film scorey, though. Which makes a lot of sense, of course, but this certainly seems a bit empty with out the accompanying visuals. Still a nice listen on its own.

He didn't join GDS until 20 Songs or Less, so that should ease your listening a bit.

So aparently Play Music has every Folkways album ever released.
I'm not a big fan of streaming but I'm not paying for it so I'll use it for muh avant releases

Although he did play on NYC Ghosts and Flowers.

I think they (play music, spotify, deezer) share basically the same catalog though, so Spotify probably has Folkways records too
>>
>>63266033
they do, spotify has all of folkways, but I don't want to pay for it.

>>63266078
I don't think Play Music is free
If that was understood from my post it is because my family pay for the family plan and I'm on it.
>>
>>63266093
I have it as well, I just didn't know they had all of folkways on there/never really tried using it
