Dinosaur Jr- You're Living All Over Me
This band was a large influence on Daydream Nation, and it's easy to see why. The chilled out noise rock riffs on both are pretty similar, and Thurston and J Mascis have kinda similar voices. This album has some differences though, including the killer solos, which aren't present on DN.

I'm supposed to hear a new anon recommended record for the next 365 days everyday. I've already heard one within the last 24 hours, but it's past 12am so it's a new day here. Going for my 4th record. First reply decides what I listen to.

Man honestly I couldn't care less. I mean some of them actually seem to know how it is here and are just trolling, but then there's real ignorant people who believe an entire country of over 1 billion population is completely backward.

But they're really funny too sometimes.

Sgt Pepper has some mediocre tracks, but it has a few really fantastic ones.
>>
>>60378682
yeah i feel you, honestly i had a beatles phase in junior high and haven't really been interested in them at all since,
it's just that Sgt. Pepper in particular is so ubiquitous in Top Albums Of All Time lists, and every dadrocker seems to see it as the greatest thing ever, its hard to believe someone has been able to avoid listening to it

Looking for some more recs!
If I forgot to review anything that you've rec'd me in the past and wanna hear my thoughts let me know, I've been busy lately and haven't kept a great record of what I reviewed/haven't reviewed.

Here's my rym if it helps, but really I'll listen to anything: https://rateyourmusic.com/~theSoundfreq

As for 2015 releases, I was pleasantly surprised with Neon Indian, it was catchy as fuck. And Divers was bretty good, but I haven't listened to any of her other stuff so I don't know how it stands up to the rest of her discography. I should probably listen to Ys.

Also, I'm finally listening to Schwarze Riesenfalter (pic related), and it is probably the best ambient album released in the past few years. So dark, yet so comfy.

Can anyone listen to and share honest opinions on No drum and bass in the jazz room by Clever Girl?
>>
>>60378986
It's nothing groundbreaking, but it's definitely a really fun math rock album, and the saxophone is a creative touch to the genre.

my favorite ep of all time, and the best in it's genre imo

As far as I know, it's actually their only release, unfortunately.

I do share the same amount of love. When you say best in it's genre, are you referring to math rock in general? Because I've always felt it has an emo/math rock feel to it?

Kreng - L'autopsie phénoménale de Dieu
>>
I love talking to my dad about music. He always has such funny stories from when he was a teenager.
ex:
He was listening to Devo's debut album in his room when his mom came in and said "are they singing about a mongoloid? that's not very nice."

He once told everyone he liked Elvis Costello because he wanted to sound cool (even though he never listened to him). So then his friends got him an Elvis Costello record for his birthday and he hated it. And he STILL went to an Elvis Costello concert with his friends after this.

He said one of his biggest regrets is missing a Wall of Voodoo concert to hang out with his highschool gf

Befriended some girl simply cause she wore a PiL t-shirt on her first day at the school.

he recalled in a somewhat embarrassed tone how he used to complain to his mom while they were driving that all pop radio music is crap and only the dumbest people enjoy that stuff.

I feel like he would have been a beautiful /mu/tant

Stereolab - Peng!

>noise rock, indie rock, drone rock

This album was pretty similar to Transient Noise Bursts, but with some differences that made it pretty interesting to listen to. First of all, the song structures are generally a lot poppier sounding. Although Noise Bursts had a handful of songs with pop hooks and catchy melodies, it seems this album has less focus on noisiness and more quiet, toned down songs. Additionally, there are a few tracks on here I would even venture to call ambient, as they utilize almost no rhythm and are completely bald on dreampop-like vocal layers and analogue organ sounds. As this is an earlier album from them (their first, as I recall), there seems to be less experimentation going on, but the elements from their later albums also show up here, including the droning repetitions, TVU-esque guitar noise, and those sweet, sexy analogue synthesizers.

There are a lot of great tracks on here (“Seeming and the Meaning”, “Stomach Worm”, and “Mellotron” are highlights, but all in all it might be my least favourite album that I’ve heard from them due to the relatively uninteresting quieter jams on here (which are still pretty cool, but seem to break the pace of the album from the fast paced, poppy rock songs).

Overall: This band continues to impress me by keeping a similar sound on each album but keeping enough variation in their sound to stay interesting. This album in particular was quieter than I’d like it to have been, but still a very good listen.

My friends all have tolerable taste, or don't care about music enough to give a damn.

Also my ex gf was almost perfect music wise. She didn't have great taste, but she was so open to new music that even if I put on some weird shit like Beefheart (weird to a normie) she would tolerate it and never bash it and always find some good in everything. And I actually managed to get her into a few good artists.

Not really even a friend tho, the people i hang out with in residence are cool but i pretty much only chill with them because i live in the same building as them.

The people outside of residence who i've met have pretty good taste generally, one girl is super into psych rock and i've been trying to get her into more experimental shit, and the Xiu Xiu shirt guy listens to a ton of hardcore and noise, he plays drums too and we've been talking about making a noise rock band or something which would be super rad

My taste started getting too weird for my friends so whenever I wanna talk about some album I heard recently I don't really bother because I know they won't care. I do have a friend who has a similar taste to mine and we rarely talk about anything that isn't music.

I hardly talk to people normally but when i get on a tangent describing what I like about an album i'll talk for hours at a time.

Other than that, I really don't talk about it very much at all, mostly because I dont know anyone who listens to the same music as me who i don't know from either skype or 4chan
>>
>>60383413
sounds awesome
I'd jump on the band thing, personally I've never met another person who plays an instrument and has good taste.

I have a friend who is still a senior in hs, but by far has the coolest musical taste. She is super into punk and post-punk and goes to all these dope ass local shows and is friends with so many musicians, like I envy her life man.
She got to interview Ian MacKaye for a school project, FUCKING IAN MCKAYE. and recently she sent me a pic of herself with the vocalist from Clipping, like fucking hell dude.
I'm planning to go see Savages and TMBG with her over winter break tho, so that's cool.

My friend and I discovered /mu/ at the same time pretty much and we were both pretty hardcore dadrockers back then, so we went through all the mucore like most newbies do. But I was the first to get into hip-hop and I slowly got my friend into MF Doom and all of the Hellfyre club. But now it's gotten to the point where he only listens to hip hop. Modest Mouse- The Lonesome Crowded West

This is the 2nd release from indie darling Modest Mouse. Instrumentally, it's nothing special, just some standard indie rock with a light country influence (use of fiddle/banjo). This album's uniqueness comes in it's lyrics, from frontman Isaac Brock. This album is essentially a concept album about life as a 20 something drug addict, always on the road. The album is incredibly well written, and the streak of Jesus Christ Was an Only Child to Trailer Trash is some of the finest songwriting in indie rock history, if not rock history

overall

I'm pretty far behind on my chart. I've been listening, but I'm just too lazy to update, usually. I'll fill in this week with a bunch of mini reviews.

>Solex - Solex vs. The Hitmaster
Pretty good, sound collage-backed pop music.

>Solex - Pick Up
Pretty good, sound collage-backed pop music. This is a little more eclectic, and sounds a little more erratic than SvTH. Neither was as good as Low Kick and Hard Bop, imo, but this one gets closer than SvTH on some tracks.

>Ahnnu - World Music
A short (13 min) aptly titled plunderphonics album. It sounds pretty jazzy. Not much to hate here, but not a whole lot to enjoy. I liked what I heard enough.

>Tipsy - Trip Tease
I was really hoping for something a little more psychedelic with that album cover and title, but it was kind of like the lounge music of plunderphonics. I liked a few moments on here and the overall mood was pretty chill, but really nothing stuck out to me after two listens. I enjoyed the atmosphere enough, I guess.

>2 8 1 4 - 新しい日の誕生
I guess I've fallen for the meme. This was pretty good, and works well in both dedicated listening and background music. I thought it did a pretty good job of crafting a cool atmosphere, and it might be one of the best vaporwave release I've heard (as low a bar as that is).

>>60386148
Watch out for Born in the U.S.A. That album will make you roll your eyes so hard they might roll back into your skull. Also, Reverse Shark Attack has a killer cover of "Take Up Thy Stethoscope and Walk", so would recommend that album.

>>
>>60387563

we were talking about her own work. her contributions being vocals and lyrics, not the production.

>good taste
taste isn't good or bad, it's present or absent. your explorations into synth punk and traditional folk are signs of taste, yet you hold to this idea that pop rap is "shitty", so it hasn't been fully earned.

>>60387488
I love TV comedies, even ones that aren't that good, but I couldn't watch more than the first episode. It's diluted jokes from his standup within the context of a shitty sitcom. I don't even mind sitcoms (I actually watch the Big Bang Theory, judge away) but yeah, Mulaney's show was pretty shit. Also he's a really bad actor. Avoid it.

I just don't like it, I don't think she's very interesting lyrically. Although I do commend her for at least trying. Even though she doesn't produce, that doesn't stop me from disliking the beats she decides to rap over because they are quite dull. And the rockist accusation is completely inapplicable, I don't even know what you are trying to imply. Are you saying if I try to digest her music in a singles format rather than an album format I'll somehow enjoy it more? I don't disregard whole albums if there are a few songs I don't like if that's the statement you are trying to make.

> Björk 'Vulnicura' (One Little Indian, 2015)

I developed a teenboy crush on Björk in the late '80s (who didn't?) and followed her career up until 'Vespertine', after which point I started losing interest. This is the first of her albums since then that I have listened to properly. The sound is huge and majestic. I love the lush string arrangements and crushed-ice electronic rhythms, especially early on in the album. Björk's voice is in stunning form. Things start to get darker halfway through "Black Lake" and the mood doesn't lighten until the last track, "Quicksand", which has fractured beats that sound like something released on Planet Mu in the late '90s. This was really good and has inspired me to investigate all the albums I missed. 8-

>Jim O'Rourke - Insignificance
Basically one of the best straightforward rock records I have heard in a long time. Really strong songwriting with great choruses, good mix between more rocky songs and calmer songs, and despite being straightforward, it's still an O'Rourke album, so there's enough uniqueness going on regardless. Just a great album, really. 8/10

>Sun City Girls - Horse Cock Phepner
SCG abandon the middle eastern influences and just make a rock record that's relatively weird but still not really that engaging. There's more focus on humor here, but the problem is that their humor here is mostly of the infantile toilet humor kind, and not the good kind of infantile toilet humor, either. Just not that interesting, sadly. The instrumentation is capable and some songs are quite good, but overall it's pretty middle of the road. 5/10

>Haino/O'Rourke/Ambarchi - Now While It's Warm...
Pretty nice stuff from these guys, although definitely a cut below their other collaborative material. The noise rock stuff on here is solid, the more ambient sounding tracks ar enice for the variety but kinda spotty in quality. I like the song where Haino plays the flute. Nice listen, although nothing special for these guys. 6.5/10

>Ground Zero - Last Concert
Starts with a very busy electroacoustic track, followed by a long noisy avant-prog jam which is absolutely great, and comes to a conclusion with a great alternative take on their masterpiece Consume Red. The opener is a cut below the rest, but it's all good. 8/10

>Nurse With Wound - Spiral Insana
Starts off with a Badalamentian synth, industrial sounds and murmur in the background and from there on travels through worlds of throbbing electronic pulses, small acoustic compositions, and a blasting organ. A great experience. 8/10

>Radio Pyongyang: Commie Funk and Agit Pop from the Hermit Kingdom
Medleys of schmaltzy pop, militant choirs, and propaganda broadcasts combine into a surprisingly fun and surreal listen. 7.5/10

Holding this off for so long was either the best or worst idea ever. This was good. I've never listened to something that sounded so carefully arranged, but at the same time messily put together. The whole album has a contrast of delicateness in I'll Be Your Mirror and All Tomorrow's Parties, and the roughness of Heroin, European Son and Black Angel's Death Song. These two elements also find a nice balance in songs like I'm Waiting for The Man.

Album of the Week
>Lila Downs - La Cantina
These are great Mexican drinking songs in the Norteño style. I think Lila Downs outdoes other great Norteño bands like Los Tigres del Norte and Los Tucanes de Tijuana (who were my favorites until I heard this). If you've never heard this kind of music, this is an amazing way to start.

Others of note:
>James Ferraro - Skid Row
I was surprised by this as I thought his previous effort was just ok. This has some great samples from news during the Rodney King riots and paints an interesting picture of that time.

Sad Wings of Destiny (1976) by Judas Priest, recommended by TrishAh

An early album from Judas Priest where the band are absolutely unafraid to wear their influences on their sleeves. I hear a great deal of early British metal in most of these songs, in one form or another, but it's often quite varied nonetheless. On the chuggy and moderate side of songs like the title track, one cannot fail to recall Black Sabbath, although the production (and playing) is notably cleaned up. Just as common is the driving hard rock and distorted blues riffing of Deep Purple on 'Deceiver' and 'Tyrant'; some of the album's best cuts.

But there's also the ever-present element of camp that always set Priest apart from those earlier bands and, to my ear, made them a bridge between pre-punk hard rock of the early 70s and the emergence of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal in the 80s. This frequently manifests itself in Halford's famously operatic vocals, and a tendency towards theatricality in the songwriting. Here they take their cue from Queen - most obviously on the near-pastiche 'Epitaph' - and the results are unpredictable. In places this leads to a drastic break which is difficult to countenance, as on the aforementioned 'Epitaph' and the piano-driven instrumental 'Prelude'. But it also leads to some strong points, such as the wonderful guitar solo on the otherwise dreary ballad 'Dreamer Deceiver' (surely the model for Metallica's famous ballads), and gets Halford's voice away from its lower and harsher, drier range which grates more than a little.

Two unexpected highlights: crisp, warm production, and accomplished solos. This record, whilst often evoking grimy and downcast moods, nonetheless sounds great throughout. The instruments are particularly well recorded, especially the drums and guitars, which leads me to my second point. Tipton's solos aren't at all innovative or even very original, but they're some of the most compelling I've heard in metal. A solid listen.

>Jandek - Shadow Of Leaves

There are 3 tracks on here with the return of the bass guitar. The title track opens up the album and it is HALF AN HOUR LONG. Fucking hell. The bass playing is more of the 2 string progressions in free-form rhythmic patterns. A lot of the times it sounds like he is tuning/detuning the strings as he plays the bass. A lot of slides too.

Now the lyrics are absolutely spectacular here. The aftertaste they leave is actually sweet. Smith writes out a huge story that lasts forever or maybe doesn’t last at all. Everything is cryptic but wonderful at the same time. I believe the core of the track concentrates on a relationship. “I’m fixed with you now / It’s some kind of an eternity / But I’m lasting forever” just shows you the scales of time (or rather the lack of it) Jandek presents the listener with. There are so many cool lines in this narration. My favourite is probably “I’ll put out the thoughts / And we’ll look at them”. It’s pretty funny. The track ends on a lovely and rather peaceful note (“Now I’m waiting for you
To share the spaces that we traversed in this life / So, if it’s heaven / I wouldn’t want it any other way”) and it made me feel a sense of comfort.

What didn’t give me any comfort was the vocal delivery. It sounds incredibly anxious. There are a couple of moments where Smith even laughs, but outside of these rarities all we have is a raw and expressive “singing”. Somehow it doesn’t really fit with a generally positive story.

After 30 minutes of bass guitar and storytelling, Jandek does continues with the same program on the remaining 2 short tracks. “Find Me Again” is about this certain character who (much like Mr. Sterling here) likes to keep the whole mysterious aura around himself in a playful manner. He just keeps hiding from everyone because the myth needs to live.

“I Give You Me” closes off the album. It is an incredibly egoistic track with the lyrics touching upon the importance of the protagonist. His address to the listener makes you believe that he is an essential part of our life. The bass guitar continues on with this exact same picking pattern and it does get a bit more stale as the album progresses.

I think the lyrics are very strong on here, especially on the title track. The bass doesn’t seem to cut it on the second album. Unlike the acoustic guitar, I feels like it deteriorates the whole style with longer exposures. Either way, I liked the album.

Reverend Bizarre - In the Rectory of the Bizarre Reverend (2002)
>doom metal, traditional doom metal

Nice Sabbath-y, Candlemass-y trad doom. Everything sounds nice, I love the vocalist, its appropriately doomy, but MAN all the songs are too fucking long.

Graceland by Pavl Simon was a pretty nice listen, some songs stood ovt others were jvst there bvt pretty good. It's nice to hear something different in pop mvsic, the african motif was nicely implemented.

>The For Carnation - S/T

Brooding, waving and throbbing barely morphing grooves, album much easier to describe with buzzwords and idle adjectives than anything.
Feels like staring outside a window on the topmost floor of an apartment complex, drunk and aggressive but docile late on a Saturday night.
Being Held somewhat breaks this up I feel, point of that one track escapes me but the album picks up again strong afterwards.

Made with contributions from 3/4th of Slint nevertheless very different. It isn't in-your-face impressive and unique as Spiderland is but just as charming and atmosphere dense, probably more.

/DAILY/WEEKLY/ RANKINGS

1st* (5pts) hahaha (Emmanuelle Parrenin - Maison rose)
2nd* (4pts) trianglecubed (Andrew Hill - Smokestack)
3rd (1pt) TrishAh (Judas Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny)
4th (0pts) HeyAnon (Julia Holter - Tragedy)
5th (-1pts) Dogwander (Hilary Hahn / Valentina Lisitsa - Four Sonatas)
6th (-2pts) Benji (Brigitte Fontaine & Art Ensemble of Chicago - Comme à la radio)
7th (-3pts) Relgob (Terminal Cheesecake - Cheese Brain Fondue: En concert á l'Embobineuse, Marseille)

Things are getting intense. hahaha leaps for the first time into (joint) pole position, with TrishAh hot on his heels. At the other end of the scoreboard, Dogwander sinks into the lowest ever score (-7), whilst trianglecubed makes a strong bid to escape last place oblivion with his first ever non-last-place recommendation, recovering from a score of -6 to -2 (39th place). Who will break the deadlock at the top of the chart?

Tramuc and Darius - Rebirth Of Time
[2014]

A more polished free improv record, as in there's some piano and saxophone pieces and the whole piece seems mellow, but it's terribly unimportant, as unimportant as pretty much most of the other free based releases on the label. They're all pleasing records, maybe because i find pleasing the idea of sound itself, and with them being neutral im sure i won't hate them and neither love them. It's such a state of mediocrity and neutrality that I could lower most of the scores by two or three points and they would still feel right. I guess the idea of being neither good or bad is worse than the idea of being bad itself.
The two records that have a musical base are in fact quite solid and worth listening. Maybe it's just me that I've chosen the least compelling pieces of Pan Y Rosas' catalog, but my experience with the label hasn't been more than numb emptyiness.

I have higher hopes for the second label so I'm pretty positive that will be fun!

Television- Marquee Moon
This album has some great guitar work, but that's all I can really say stands out. The vocals are a little off putting, but once you get used to them they're all right. The song writing isn't great, but it's not awful either. The title track and Prove It are pretty good, and Venus is interesting as it has the entire formula of a Strokes song about 30 years before they are even formed.

3.5/5

Out of the albums you've listened to I have only heard the Excercise one and I kind of liked that one. I'm a sucker for albums with interesting concepts and pyr has a lot of those. I can see why you didn't like a lot of the albums though. The excecution of the musical ideas behind them is often not very good and many of the projects lack cohesion.

What label are you planning on doing next?

it feels very nostalgic and child-like to me. reminds me of early mbv. I like the gvy's voice better than the girl's.

pretty straightforward indie/jangle pop bvt it's very enjoyable and jvst nice to listen to. I completely vnderstand why he likes it so mvch, for me it's a 7

it's weird to not like records that are very close to this one bvt this feels special for some reason
