I've asked this one before

>wanna make techno music
>know very little music theory

I was rec' to learn minor scales, so I went ahead and learnt major scales as well. I guess there will be things I will pick up as I read more, but is there anything else theory-wise that I should know to make techno/house music?

I already know sound synthesis, my DAW and mixing

thank you

I'm not that guy, but a lot of dance music uses 1 type of chord that is then transposed. You've probaly heard something like this before.

https://clyp.it/lr4qkgh3
>>60306598
there are thousands of youtube videos
although if you're interested in techno music it's sometimes nice to have no musical background and have more of a sound background first
try making music that you think sounds good by playing with plugins and synths and stuff and then once youre done making a few songs use theory to make them better
too many people try to structure their music based in theory and rules (not that that's wrong, just that it's common)

This looks like it will do the trick, thanks
>>
>>60305749
That just sounds like classic french house style sample chopping. Justice and Daft Punk do the same thing(and better in my opinion).

What they are doing is throw a bunch of songs into an audio editor and chopping bits that they like out. Then they either play them out over a keyboard or just copy paste them together in their sequencer. Its really not hard. Sounds like the whole track is sidechained to the kick drum so it pumps in and out.

You can do sample collage techniques like this pretty easily if you realize that you can pitch shift any sample to be in tune with another. Once you wrap your head around that then the possibilities become endless.

So I've been reading Music Theory: tl;dr version and I had a quick question. He refers to flats in a scale (b3, b7, or whatnot), these refer to the flatted versions of whatever note it would be in the major scale version, correct?
>>
>>60310337
yes basically

"The second way to conceive of the minor scale is by taking a major scale and flatting (aka, lowering by a half-step) the 3rd, 6th, and 7th notes. We will write these from now on as b3, b6, and b7. This is important for reasons I will go into in a later post."

I kind of don't like that source though because it is annoying how they write
>>
>>60310403

So the 4th in a minor scale is 1.5 steps away from the b3, but still the same note as it would be in a major scale, correct?
>>
>>60310504
im not really sure to be honest

if you flatten those notes you get the minor scale of the root note like from g major to g minor
>>
>>60310619

It's windy as fuck here in denmark so I figured I'd try and write something about that, original huh?

I haven't decided what to do with the right hand at 0:46 onwards, or if i should try and think of a better transition into that last part.

I think I'd be able to play forever in that windy chromatic scale up and down, but it gets really boring after a while and I kinda wanna progress it into something different and then maybe come back to the windy part once or twice before the end.

Synth Jazz
I've already wrote the whole thing out on piano, I just need to be not lazy and record all the parts all the way through.
Thoughts? I'm free-wheeling the filter cuttoff on my mono synth, but I might switch it to an envelope, maybe with a bit of aftertouch, so that I can play both keyboards at the same time.

The filter on the drums sweeping up and down has quite a bit of resonance, and it gets kind of unpleasant when it passes through the bass drum and thumps unnaturally.

>The filter on the drums sweeping up and down has quite a bit of resonance, and it gets kind of unpleasant when it passes through the bass drum and thumps unnaturally.
huh, i've always kinda liked that phaser bass drum sound, maybe it only sounds good on my monitors/headphones and isn't translating well. i've also done barely any mixing so i can probably reign it in a bit either way. glad you liked it, it's the first thing i've made using my 3 kaoss pads/404 effects chain that i felt like posting here.

your clyp sounded good too, only suggestion i really have is maybe more reverb on the hats, maybe just personal preference though since i use tons of reverb all the time
>>
>>60323894
do you have a treated room acoustics ?

that might be why it doesn't translate if not

I don't have treatment and I still have to test my mix on multiple sources and I have decent monitors/ headphones
>>
>>60323656
>How is that MPC?
I really, really like it, but like I said, there's a lot of limitation when it comes to anything that could be done just as easily on a computer. For example, if you're looking into recording, you really need a third party OS, and it's better to have the premium ($100+ can't remember) OS as well, since the free version limits the amount of audio tracks. However, if you don't mind what I mentioned, and the install for either OS is easy as shit, it's a fine little piece of hardware
>16 bit 44.1hz sampling, right?
Yep, .WAV, and I had to convert most of my samples down from 24bit to 16bit, it was a pain in the ass.

Here's a WIP I made using just the MPC and the microKorg:
https://clyp.it/qmiodd4f

By the way, I really like your track, the filter cutoff modulation really adds a nice sense of variation, and the drums are mixed well in the track itself.
>>
>>60323929
>do you have a treated room acoustics ?
kind of, i have a couple of bass traps in the back corners of my room and a couple of panels on either side of the listening position/ one behind the desk but i havent done room eq wizard or any of that stuff so it's not accurately treated, just to the point of sounding a bit better than it did before
>>
>>60323460
I like the drums a lot.
The synths together sounds bad to me though, maybe switch out the sound on the synth playing the chords and keep the lead as it is? Maybe you like the sound though.
I really like the twist at the end, it's super cool dude.
>>
>>60324135
Thanks.
The poly synth is 'supposed' to be an EP, but I haven't gotten around to installing the instrument simulation pack on my synth. There should also be a bass guitar underneith to fill out that empty space, but again I haven't made time to do that yet.
>>60324009
I didn't know they had different OSes. Would the standard one that comes in it not be good for recording? I mean honestly, I want a Zoom R16, but I think my friend is set on getting and learning an MPC after watching different hip hop producers play samples on the pads in a cool way. Alas, the MPX8 was not enough to sate him.

I think it might be because it never gets the bpm right. It's giving me 141 on this, but I tap out like 132~.

yes that's why like a drummer never plays at a steady bpm and neither does a live band

the warping in ableton is more geared towards tracks for dj use with a steady beat

Hi guys, don't really go in these threads all too often, but I need some help/advice on audio levels.
What are the proper db a video should be when uploading to YouTube?
What are the proper db for mastering a song?
>>
>>60328633
most masteringfags will have you give them a file -3db or so for the master peak
>>
>>60328949
Thanks I appreciate it

>>60328633
for youtube it's generally best practice to master to no more than -1dBfs (although even less is fine too, which i'll explain in a minute)

when mastering to uncompressed audio (wav, aif) you can go all the way up to -0.1dBfs if you want, although the perception of human hearing isn't adept enough for anyone to hear the difference between -0.1 and -0.3dB so -0.3dB is as far away from clipping as possible without it being any quieter.

anyway, the data compression in general risks altering the waveform and adding noise, so to avoid clipping and unintended ugliness you want to keep your peak away from 0.0dB. youtube does no dynamic compression to your audio, but normalizes the audio to a safe (non-clipping) playback level. if you master to -1dBfs or -3dBfs for youtube, it'll sound the same as someone who mastered to 0.0dB except your tracks won't be clipping and nasty.

internet audio is a kind of a bitch as every compression format is different and every host (soundcloud, ban'camp, youtube, itunes, etc) has a whole different (often secret) process happening in the background.
>>
>>60329190
Thank you as well! Yeah, I've never really had this issue before but this one video I've been uploading keeps sounding way too low for some reason.
I'll try it out.
Thanks again.
>>
>>60328633
Use another track/video for reference.

Bring it into the software you are using (make sure there are no additional processing on it/send directly to output) and compare it to the levels of your track.
>>
>>60329217
maybe you need to put a HPF on it? it's possible you have excessive infrasonic rumble (like 3Hz or even some DC offset somewhere) that's triggering youtube's normalization process and squashing your level. otherwise idunno, weird.
>>
>>60329186
>>60329190
yes hes right I meant the .3 in this post >>60328949
you basically keep your faders at 0 in the daw and use the volume from your instrument itself to turn down is how I do
>>
>>60329240
I downloaded a video to check its dB, which peaked at about 3 dB.
The audio sounded completely different than on YouTube though.
>>
Why does every beat made using an sp404 sound so noticeably 404? is there a specific filter that gives them that sound or what. If there is, are there any vst's that can recreate this effect.
>>
>>60329488
lolwut
>>
>>60329488
because it is hardware and ive never seen 404 samples advertised honestly
>>
>>60329488
What you're describing is essentially the components in the unit that slightly color the sound, all hardware is victim to this. Soft synth devs have to try to simulate that, but their goal isn't always to make it sound like specific hardware.
>>
>>60329630
yes especially older synths every unit sounds barely different because no 2 circuitry is the same
>>
>>60329488
>sp404
it's a fairly modern sampler and so it should be pretty transparent. i guess there's a "lo fi" mode though so maybe that's what you're hearing. it's probably just some bitcrusher/sample rate reducer effect.
>>
>>60329819
Modern or not, I doubt the signal path is as simple as just a ADC/DAC. Any physical components in the audio path will color the sound.
>>
>>60330034
it's definitely possible but i'm skeptical that that's the case here. of course, i have no idea what that poster was hearing so i'm not at all invested in this topic.
>>
>>60327945

>>
>>60331226
Oh, the built in plugins have the ability to route without having to route via aux like in other daws?
>>
>>60331439
I would point you toward any if I could, but all I use are free sample packs, so I keep a really shitty sounding kick (kicks that sound good right off the bat are the hardest for me to come by) while writing the majority of my song, then I spend some time layering them with some more kicks pitching them up or down, effecting and bouncing to audio and repeating that shit until I get a kick I like, I find these free packs online by googling 'free drum samples' and by signing up to drum sample websites and stuff ( you usually get a free pack of good sounding stuff upon registering) although if you look around the internet and find out the packs and samples that pros use , you could probably find some torrents of them.... also if you have any lossless music files you can sample from that
>>
Are there any suggested videos for learning the very basics of creating non-generic drumbeats? I'm just starting to get back into trying to produce and it's the one area I seriously don't know what the fuck I'm doing.
>>
>>60331439
Not quite what I'm going about. For instance, you could add a resonator bank or a distortion to late reflection only in a reverb, or add blur (or any fx really) to delays and stuff. Most of the plugins provide insertion points for other plugins in a sort of quasi-modular way. It's super flexible.

Now if only I wasn't three times as fast in FL Studio because of habit...
And if only I didn't hate the Live-esque workflow...

Yes put a bass
>>
>>60332393
Ah gotcha, that is def easier than the Aux method in other daws
>>
>>60334628
so Im basically a noob and sucks but here's my 2 cents:

put a sidechain compressor on the bass (with audio from the kick) because it's a mess like this. I would also use a better kick, or maybe with more "glue" as Ableton would call: basically pump it
Also mix it better with compression because in the end one would like to hear those snares

that said I dont really care for the melody
>>
>>60334982
Lel, don't know why you keep comparing it to aux tracks, when it's more like opening up a hardware unit, breaking pre-made connections and inserting new features in them.

I'm pretty shit with a piano mostly because I'm used to a computer keyboard since it's what I've been using on my DAW for quite some time.
I only plan to use it for bedroom producing so I like the idea of having a lot of different controls like knobs and pads besides just a keyboard; but maybe I should first buy a solid keyboard and then add the other stuff as I go along?
>>
>>60335896
>but maybe I should first buy a solid keyboard and then add the other stuff as I go along
That's basically what I did. Or maybe buy just a pad controller, or a knob bank first, and then consider adding a keyboard. I can almost guarantee you'll get frustrated sooner or later with 25 mini keys.

goto a store and try it. your opinion can change greatly once you actually get it in your hands.

any specs you read online are just bull shit, all that should matter is how the keys feel when you play. That's essentially the bulk of the cost of any keyboard controller.

Buy one if you like that style of music, you can't really beat the hands on feel of a dedicated drum machine.
You'd save a fuck load of money buying a sampler and getting samples of that and any other drum machine you fancy though. Most people I know that have drum machines generally just end up sampling them though to be honest.
As another anon has pointed out you could get a TR-8 with the 909 and 808 kits built in along with the 707 and 606 kits too. I looked at getting the TR-8 after having a play with it in my local music shop, it sounded really good, then I had a play with the Maschine studio which has all those kits as samples and decided to get that instead, works really well as a drum machine in step mode plus you get loads of other stuff bundled with it too so I ended up buying that.
>>
https://clyp.it/x0fvcjep

Does this 808 sound muddy to you guys? According to a friend of mine it is, but I think he's talking bullshit like always.

I split it up into one part sub bass and one part everything else, so that might be the cause, but I think I EQed it correctly, so idk.

None of the other instruments are mixed yet, sorry for that.

>>60340336
I do pretty much just future bass nowadays. You might want to do some work on your volume relationship between the instruments as well as EQing everything so they don't compete too much for space in the mix (cut out any range that isn't doing much for the instrument, pretty much).
>>
>>60343005
>pretty comfy, but I bought the VST thing by monstrum just to be safe.

Wow I didn't know that existed, worth knowing about I guess, but the reason I'm thinking of the pulse is to get away from the computer for creating synth patches

Hey /mu/tants, I've been producing for about a year now, or just trying to produce rather, and I still have not created a single song I'm satisfied with. Idk if im the only one with this issue, but every time I open my daw, I sit and work on about an 8 bar loop, and just get stuck there. All I keep making are fucking loops and I'm sick of not being able to progress further than that 8 bar loop or whatever. I have so many god damn ideas yet I can't even create a decent intro.
