reposting questions from the last /prod/

does anyone know realistically how bad it would be for the stylus or the records themselves to turn off the motor in the middle of a song to get the whole vinyl slowdown effect or to spin the record by hand while the motor is off to get a similar slow warpy sound?

it's hard to google around for this shit without running into the audiophile types who tell you to absolutely never break any of the rules of proper operation/storage/upkeep/etc

but then you see in videos like rhythm roulette that producers who actually sample records don't treat their shit like that (i don't have as nice of a turntable as they would have though, it's pretty old looking turntable and i dont even know whether it's belt drive or direct drive because there's no info online and i dont know what to look for in all the mechanical shit on the underside)

generally just improving the piano would make the track way better. get a soloist on there and its fire. i like the ideas u have on here a lot just needs some punch. bass sounds very canned too. keep chiseling at it man, i like what ur doing
>>60282064
would love to hear a bangin drum section on there. some thick drums would balance out the light piano ambience to make it a more interesting track overall. nice detail in the percussion, good work for 30 minutes.
>>60282269
i love this! those vocals are heavenly. the only tip i can give is to mix it a little better. the lead guitar is a little too loud and the acoustic chords could be a little louder. drums could use some "oomph" as well, but great work overall, reminds me of cortex

I actually didn't do it like that its way expensive if you buy seperatley or get suite full price

I upgraded from live intro to suite for a good deal when it was on sale in version 8

you can also buy second hand liscense for cheaper too and sell your old liscense
>>
>>60280625
The only danger you have of damaging the stylus and/or record is if the record spins backwards into the back of the stylus (unless you've got a DJ stylus, in which case you won't have to worry about anything.)

>>60282112
I haven't got very many acoustic instruments, but yes. Mainly just chord strums/percussion sounds to put into a sampler, though.

>>60282200
It's fine. As much as I love hardware, I have to say you can do practically everything hardware can inside a DAW with VSTs.

>>60283626
I bought a cheap controller that came with a limited version of Lounge Lizard and it's all I've ever needed for rhodes sounds.

im a veteran and getting old, like 24 years but im still feeling motivated to get something done.

im going in on the bandwagon with vaporwave but i dont want to take other peoples songs. i just want to create something new. what would not be considered vaporwave if i make originals? would it just be considered ambient?
>>
>>60284359
I think if you made songs that mimicked the sound and style of 80s pop and then just sampled them like a vaporwave producer would any other 80s track it would still be considered vaporwave.

Just use lots of DX7/M1 and you should be good.
>>
>>60284437
oh then pretty easy then. i just want to add some flare to it to distinguish it from the others.

how long should the first album be? 30 minutes an hour? or should i just make a 15 minute ep? Im looking into selling.

Physical or digital distribution? If digital then I'd say you should start with an EP first to clearly establish your sound. If you start with an album you run the risk of padding out the run time with filler that no one's going to care about.

been doing this for like 4 months now, how do i improve my drum game :(
>>
>>60286355
>https://clyp.it/gkxuogqn

sidechain some of the elements to your song to the bass drums because theyre blended in with everything
>>
>>60286355
yea, do what >>60286402
said, also maybe turn up the kick and hats, maybe beef up the snare by layering it with a beefy snare , and also, add in some other drums like toms and rim shots or anything really, and make some drum fills out of those, and pepper those into your track. That's a really nice track you got there for 4 months experience, although Imo, you should focus a bit more on your mixing, there's nothing bad at all in your mix , but the whole thing sounds tiny, kind of like you're overcompressing everything.
>>
to technofags

what is the order of your workflow?

the drumming
pads
basslines etc
other samples
>>
>>60286775
yea I agree it is not a bad mix but the sounds just blend together to much

sidechain compression and also cut eq on instruments below their frequency

use a spectrum analyser to get roughly where you should cut too unless u do better by ear
>>
>>60286816
i like to try trance music

i like to start with a drum beat basic and then match the bass and kick with eq and compression or whatever u like to do

after i get the kick and bass sounding good together alone i like to make a lead sound that goes with the kick and bass

i don't always do the same way though ive had a lot of success with starting making a melody only

just experiment is what i do and save presets/midi clips / samples i made
>>
https://clyp.it/40wzqmaq
i plan on adding bass and maybe fixing the dynamics on the master

also 1:51 through 2:27 is somewhat rough i know
i feel like the synths were too forward before but now theyre too buried in the mix

>>60284359
all of my vaporwave is done using old 80s synths and lofi soundfonts
no samples

>>
>>60286950
i don't doubt you can sell shit but ive personally never heard of anyone talk about vaporwave irl is why i said that
>>
>>60287015
i actually worded that horribly
i spent 40 bucks on tape supplies
and then people paid 60 bucks
i made 20 bucks from the whole venture
i meant that as a "vaporwave is not a good career path" statement
>>
>>60287055

that's still a profit u did good imo

but I am just saying normies don't know what vaporwave is even

ive never sold music personally
>>
what do u do when u wanna die

it really seems like the producers only make music for other goa/psy producers

>>
anyone do live stuff? what's your setup?
>>
>>60291297
I did a one-off live show couple of weeks ago. Played guitar with my left hand and MIDI keyboard with my right, both running through FL. Guitar could have effects added on the fly or loops set up, while the MIDI keyboard was playing various smooth synths (some super metroid soundfonts mostly) and mars mens choir for a bit of vocals. It was me and a drummer and people seemed to really enjoy it. It was an exhibition opening, good fun.

you got a good framework here! i'd say sidechain stuff to the kick to make it stand out more, and try to add more mid. also could use a nice bass in there. i could see this easily being an edm hit if you worked at it enough.
>>60283114
sounds straight off of &&&&& this gooooess
>>60283475
i like it! could be finished if it was longer. the only thing i'd say it really needs (besides length) is a mix. you have a lot going in the lower mid to mid range so try to eq a lot and pan the instruments a little more so that they don't clash and muddle together. needs a lil more high end too. good work!
>>60283738
i loooove that lead arp, very pretty. this reminds me of R+7 a lot. overall just needs more layers, some sampled stuff would suit it very nicely. some things i like to do to get this is to pitch up things i already have in there 12 semitones and make it quieter just to add detail. take some mid end off the arp and add reverb and it's golden.
>>60283759
very soothing, love the rhodes
>>60286355
way better than most things ive heard from people at 4 months. like the others said, sidechain your drums for sure. layer and compress them with other samples, add fx, and boost your kick up cause its sitting very low in the mix. it's also panned very far to the right; it'd fit much better in the center or near left imo. if you're going for the trap sound layering it with an 808 bass would help too. good work senpai keep at it
>>60286950
reminds me of cosmogramma and some tyler the creator stuff, like it a lot. add more synths and instruments to beef up the mix, detail work is important in this kind of sound. i actually really like 1:51, that synth is very nice. love those vocals on the end, maybe put some of that stuff throughout the song? i'd also love to hear some quiet rhodes improv over this if you're capable. some crunchy synth drums layered with the live stuff would sound nice too. its coming together!
>>60285817
