It's the 5th of November in most parts of the world.

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and, ideally, discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily; these people are in it to venture out of their comfort zone by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.
We track our progress using calendars, which we fill with the albums we listen to on each day, and a rating of some sort for all of them. There are templates in mega link at the end of this post. We encourage you to write the albums' titles and the artists' names somewhere on your calendar. We don't have any tools for creating these calendars; we use simple image editing softwares.
You can predetermine a schedule for a month, or you can report back on whatever album you randomly picked every day. Many of us make our schedules interesting in various ways, popular ones being genre restrictions, new releases, and recs from the /daily/ community.

On Saturdays a number of us partake in listenalongs. A link to the album and the chart is provided when the time comes.

We had a plug.dj room, which we used to hang out for a little while. It's now forever empty, so if you want to spend a little time there, it is too late. You can find the temporary substitute here though:

Anyone can start the threads, but usually one of /daily/'s dedicated trips starts them. If the thread is not yet up by 15:30 GMT, we encourage you to start it! Just be sure to use the standard OP.

Templates were once in a mega link in the archive, now most of us use

Most importantly, have fun!

Violin Melody (1996) by M. S. Gopalakrishnan, recommended by hahaha

The violin, as they often say, is the instrument that comes closest to imitating the human voice. Of all instruments, this is the one that we expect to really sing. In karnatak music, the violin is most often found to be very literally imitating the voice of the singer, closely following and repeating the melody of the improvisation sometimes only a fraction of a second behind.

M. S. Gopalakrishnan goes beyond imitation. His style takes the portamenti, bends, and glissandos that characterise the sung voice and push them into something so colourful and free as to resemble a caricature. I'm convinced that he plays about 96% of his silky, slippery melodies with just a single finger, dragging it up and down the neck of the violin with devilish precision. The effect is something that is far too woozy to be mistaken for a vocal quality; instead it becomes a wholly new and idiosyncratic way of playing the violin. It would almost be drunken in its slurring vocabulary, if it were not at the same time so tightly and precisely controlled. Gopalakrishnan's playing, then, is remarkable in itself.
>>
>>60166854

Yet I can't help but notice that the performances on Violin Melody only rarely grab the attention. In fact I can pinpoint the places where Gopalakrishnan is at his most appealing - the extremes ends of alap and drut, or the beatless beginnings and exhilarating endings of each recording. And herein lies the problem: the compositions that have been chosen here are, for the most part, rather short and boring. Only two compositions are given something close to an extended treatment, the highlight being the 19-minute 'Samaja Vara Gamana'. Gopalakrishnan is unable to bulk up the rest of the shorter pieces included here into something special, because his style of improvisation is often so middle-of-the-road without the free improvisation and driving conclusion that we get in the two longer pieces. Identifiable his playing may be, but it suffers without something to play off against.

Nonetheless, the aforementioned 'Samaja Vara Gamana' is a treasure. In ragam Hindolam, the vadi or key note is Pa (the 5th), and the constant return to this unresolved resting place gives the entire performance a delicate sense of urgency throughout. As things progress, Gopalakrishnan gets into some rhythmic games of imitation with his two mrdangam and ghatam accompanists, furthering my suspicion that he's at his best when bouncing off others. These rapid fire copy-cat phrases are delightful, and furthermore lead into an exciting and unusual shared solo between the two percussionists - almost like a kind of jugalbandi. Wonderful.

Unfortunately there is little else to tear the record away from its drab insistence on unremarkable compositions made no less dreary by Gopalakrishnan. Perhaps this illustrates the central importance of improvisation in Indian music; it doesn't matter how singular or identifiable your style is if you can't move the bandish off the ground. This is an interesting insight, at least for my own listening preferences, and I'm grateful for the lesson. Not at all to slight Gopalakrishanan, either - I look forward to hearing more of his long-form performances.

Remember to use clyp.it to post your tracks/WIP : posting a clyp.it is just providing sound for a question, posting a soundcloud link is making self-advertisement and the thread doesn't need that.

Remember to check other peoples' clyp.it links to keep the thread healthy.
