Four tet is sampling one shots from records a majority of the time, and using very gentle processing. There's a future music interview with him that goes over the making of Sing and subsequently goes into depth on that matter.

What do you guys think the future of music will look like?
I think it will go in a more multimedia approach. Taking sounds and visuals from many genres from other art mediums. It's already happening with memegenres like vaporwave.

You pick a synth you like, you improvise stuff on it until you've got an idea that sounds good, then you make a beat to go with it, add some bass and some other shit and make sure everything is mixed together well.
