i've been playing bass for years, it's been nice because you can always be in a band when you're a decent bassist. i can read music and play a few different styles well
but recently i moved to a new city and i don't really know anyone, so i want to learn guitar so i can make music by myself.
advice from anyone else who's made the transition? good starter guitars? do i need lessons or can i mostly teach myself off the internet?

How can someone play bass for so long but be such a bitch about just picking up a goddamn guitar? Just find one that feels comfortable. you probably already know some chord shapes right? I mean, how brain dead are you?
It depends on the price.
If you can play bass you can probably figure out guitar on your own just look up basic chords and shit.

Thoughts on prog? I personally love it. Especially Opeth
prog metal is a very mixed bag

Agreed, it can be very hit or miss.
Most prog metal's pretty awful. Full of bands like Opeth and Dream Theater that cater more to ADD as fuck guys who want "variety" rather than making good music which actually does a fine job of exploring the ideas it presents without meandering too much.
Check out some maudlin of the Well, Kayo Dot, Queensryche, and Stargazer they are actually good prog metal. I guess the new Vektor's pretty good, too.
Also maybe check out bands like Demilich or Deathspell Omega who don't get the prog label because they don't sound directly like the 70s guys, but their philosophy towards making music is definitely like that of the better 70s prog stuff.

Huge fan here. First song I ever heard by her was Cosmia, thought it was awful because I couldn't get past the vocals. Fortunately something clicked eventually and she's been my favourite artists for over five years now. How is it being exposed to her for the first time, if that's your case, OP?

Nobody credits theme for punk though. That always goes to The Sonics. They do credit them for noise rock/drone stuff though, which makes sense.
