Isn't this more or less the majority of 4chan's way of thinking? I see far more threads about "holy shit x is dumb" and shitposting than I do genuine discussion just about anywhere.

Yes.
I regular a quite a few interest boards on here. Some have more chill than others but they all have their share of people bitching about what other people like. If you are looking for actual discussion, you're more likely to find it on some other board than you will around here.

I've actually seen better discussions on 4chan than elsewhere.
When you're on a moderated forum with identities and consequences, it tends to have a chilling effect on dissenting opinions that makes the back and forth as shallow and trivial as modern politics.
Unless people can speak their mind freely and pursue an honest, candid dialogue without being weighed down by the gravity of public opinion, discussion usually turns out to be little more than a reiteration of the socially acceptable opinions people already admitted to having.
The relative freedom to discuss, joke around and just throw ideas out there is what makes 4chan a lot more intellectually stimulating than places where you're expected to have certain cookie cutter opinions or else people will hold it against you.
