Wellllll.....
Binge watched the entire thing, and I thought it was pretty solid. The weakest part is by far the soundtrack, which is "okay" at some points, but is pretty much unmemorable.
Compare it to the original US version of it, which at least had a cool opening and Peter Cullen narration.
The team dynamic works, the humor never gets to be too much, and brown space elf Allura is a change I heartily approve of.

Yep. Red Lion has heat laser. Blue lion has freeze laser. Red Lion is the key to Form Blazing Sword. Yellow Lion is a fucking tank and can smash things with its body and is super strong. Black Lion has the jaw blade thing it can summon and grip in its jaws to slash up the enemy plus more. Only on ep 7. Also Green lion has a stealth field.

I think the show has more than enough action in it to make up for the lack of actual Voltron. The pilots kicking ass in their space suits and the lions individually showing their strengths is still fun to watch. Right now they don't NEED Voltron in every single fucking episode. There would be no point because only half of the situations they're found in at this point in the game require any giant robot action at all. Obviously they're just building the characters and the universe they exist in. Once it gets closer to the endgame and the bad guys start throwing more giant monsters their way, Voltron will finally be required. On top of that, I stand by the opinion that if they combined in to Voltron to solve EVERY problem, it would feel less special. It would be less of an event.

The death of Shiro is probably the most memorable part in GoLion. Its not edgy to expect any sort of harm and conflict to the main cast. In every episode except the finale the Korra Voltron crew make it out of every single situation unscathed so they're almost never in any form of danger.
