They have quite a bit of plot being developed as well. The list of naturally building questions makes the show quite interesting.
1) Aliens are humanoid but there may be more than one type here now or in the past. (Dad talks about evil demons and then goes to see demons to befriend them to bring back gifts) Her father didn't exactly go missing without telling why.
2) Protagonist girl wants to goto space, teacher says it is a pipe dream buried deep underground. Mech was dug up from a pipe buried deep underground and is from space. Will they end up in space at some point?
3) Russians nuked a mech and it did a little damage and the world is actually working as a group from the get go. Global politics is much more natural and realistic with the leaks, streams, UN, ... question is has there been other aliens altering history as both the alien advanced party and Ken's clan have been wiped out and erased from history.
4) Aliens don't care about humans but are looking for something on earth related to aliens (probably another group of aliens even older or something) When everyone finds/figures this out what is going to happen.

My wild guess is that the aliens want to open a portal to link the solar system via even more ancient gravity control tech (something you would need to say make stable wormholes) so that it doesn't take hundreds of years to travel. That would make for epic story line development although it is a totally random guess.
Alternatively if the series is boring they will just fight and kill all the aliens on earth and never leave earth for the entire series.

Probably if you jump/move out of the fairly narrow beam you will stop being lifted which would be why they haven't tried it on them as it wouldn't work. Also the gravity shield probably interferes with the beam if you tried to force a non-friendly mech to be lifted.
Bigger question is how did the princess steal a mech long ago and reprogram the IFF system and users. If they can't figure it out in modern times whoever did it way back them probably knows a lot more than normal earth people at the time.
Please don't make the princess to be some kind of moon alien. I'm getting tired of anime's constant need to make a Kaguya reference when it comes to mythical princess that's not an earthling.

Funny, I think my interest for the show waned in the airport fight episode. The fight was utterly boring, not to mention it started to lose its light-hearted atmosphere from first few episodes (which I liked) with all the YUKINA GET INTO THE ROBOT.

Yes, they said this explicitly in the last episode. They're looking for some sort of keystone or artifact in Japan, and they found them already in the other locations they landed at. They're probably trying to assemble some ancient weapon or thing.

Wouldn't make much sense for them to be assembling a weapon as it would be pretty boring if it turns out to be a destroy earth for no particular reason given how they don't care about earth humans in the slightest (aside from the stolen mech).
Now if they are blowing up earth to build a space highway that would be acceptable. Alternatively my random guess is it being used for interconnection (gates) to other star systems that would also be good. (Would lead to invasion, intrigue, conflict, economics, ...)
Given how it has been hundreds of years between their arrival and the previous advanced party it may be that it takes forever to get back and forth between their central space regions and non-connected star systems.
This may be why the leader alien is says they cannot count on assistance as it would take forever and it would be shameful to go into hibernation for a few hundred years to wait for additional help.
They are also looking for artifacts in many places worldwide they have only found one part it seems. From how its parts are spread all around the planet presumably this ancient device was in orbit around earth and literally fell out of the sky and obviously has to do with some application of gravity control as they all have positive gravity anomalies where they are searching.

I'm thinking that maybe what happened in the past was another dances with wolves/avatar type story. Aliens just want their stones and dont think much of the primitive natives, natives attack out of fear and the aliens respond with force. To the natives its the end times but the aliens are just swatting away some bothersome pests. Maybe glongirs? pilot isnt cool with this and helps the humans. Then maybe the aliens realise theyve just made a mess of things so they retreat and decide to come back for the stones later when things have cooled off.
Problem is that they overslept and humans have advanced, they still have glongir as well as some of their own mechs and and on top of all that theres the potential problem that the humans may discover the stones themselves, work out what theyre for and misuse them

It is also possible there are more than one group of aliens as I said before the dad mentioned in the flashbacks "evil demons" twice and then later said he was going to befriend "demons" sans the evil bit. Since demons = aliens there is nothing logically preventing there being multiple conflicting alien groups.
The overslept bit might have just been the fact it takes a long time to reach earth's star system and when the advanced party was wiped out by another alien group by the time the current follow up party arrived many hundreds of years have past due to the travel time (Space is very big). They do have advanced stasis technology so it certainly is possible.
Unlike Avatar the stones do not appear to be a resource rather some sort of even more ancient macguffins for unknown purposes. (I'd like it to be warp gate artifiacts which would make many more plot possibilities) Although if they open a gate then exploitation would probably follow pretty quickly who knows.
The current group of aliens in orbit believe the advanced party was wiped out so I don't think anyone from their group made it back alive as they have little to none information about why their mission failed.

The other odd thing is that Ken recognizes the very tall demon from the old BW photo taken probably only a few decades ago which means there are still aliens/demons on earth or another group came back earlier than the ones in orbit right now. He is surprised to learn they are normal human sized aliens so he might not have the complete picture.

Possibly but it would be a little too convenient to have the gate fall out of orbit/sky/whatever and land in pieces right where the clan was as one of those positive gravity anomaly locations includes the dam site. The aliens would have no reason to be in that particular area if the gate was already operational and assembled and for it to fall apart and land right where they are is not very likely as it also landed in many other sites around the world.
Other main issue is that they didn't get almost wiped out they both (Advanced party and clan) appear to have been totally wiped out and then wiped clean out of human history until very recently.
In episode 4 the father says the clan name was being actively erased from history books. And Ken says the BW photo is of a fairly giant caped (>8ft) alien that attacked him and the princess way back then. The current alien pilots have capes but are much physically shorter (human sized). The mechs do not appear to have capes. He also has fought both mechs and the giant caped alien in flashbacks.
This is why I'm guessing there is another alien group. Presumably there are multiple groups fighting for control over the macguffin stones as if that is a warp gate controlling that would effectively give control of the star system and all its resources.
All of this is based off tiny hints so it could all be totally wrong.

But that's the thing. the men don't look like modern character designs for males. They aren't bishonen, and there is a large variety in their features, it almost looks like character designs for past eras. But the female designs very much do match with modern standards and they look pretty much like other highschool girls in modern shows. (some would call them moe blobs I suppose.) And this isn't really a problem, but like I said, it's a disparity when compared with the male designs. It's like they are using two separate art styles. Granted my examples only work for the school kids. The adult women match the male designs more closely, for example Yukina's mom.
And again none of these are complaints, I just think it's a little odd looking. IN my opinion.

Yukina is shit but if you didn't feel sorry for her at all this episode then there is something wrong with you.
The whole point of her character is that she's not Ace McAcerton, that she is in fact below average. The first episode instantly pounds this into you with the scene with the meeting with the teacher. On top of this she's had shitty absent parents and has basically been raising her younger sister.
And after dealing with several days of fighting aliens and being forced to be a soldier with no training she's cracking apart but nobody around her cares or helps, if they even notice. If anything they just go harder on her and add to the stress. Then she has to go to school where she gets grief from a classmate over the two guys missing and from the weeaboo about not doing her duty properly. Then to cap it off when she tries to vent some of her frustrations the mom slaps her for it.
It was a reasonable break down. She'll go back to being shit soon enough.

I really like the design of the main mecha. It gets the Samurai motif going with the horns but doesn't feel too obvious. I love the way it almost looks like it's stumbling when it walks, gives it a good sense of bulk. Finally I love the colour scheme. I'm a sucker for black on red.

Also Ken states that they were razing towns back then yet now they are not intentionally razing towns.
This masked giant dude also shows up in the BW photo and is probably >8ft tall which is far taller than any normal human or the alien pilots we have seen so far. Ken recognizes anything larger than a human to be a demon so he isn't exactly reliable on that aspect.

Although Yukimom is partially at fault in the way she raised Yukina, that doesn't mean Yukina is free from responsibility. And the slap happened after iirc. If you talk shit on your mother's husband who they assumed went crazy (although now it's clear he didn't), no matter how much of a father he was, expect to get hit as you would with any woman on top of disrespecting your father like that. Again, could have been handled better but Yukina shouldn't have talked that way.

Same here, the only thing I kind of dislike is the katana grip. But it does pull off the samurai aspect without going full retard, which I like. Just makes me wonder how they just so happened to end up sending the alien mecha that happens to look like a samurai to the exact period of time where there were samurai on the only island in the world where they existed. But I'll put aside my autism because I love the design.

Kuromukuro is slowly becoming one of my favourites even if the promise, nor the first episodes interested me.
I really love Yukina, She's the best mecha protagonist of all time, something that rarely happens with mecha protagonists that are actually just normal students in personality, She had her doses of trauma while younger due to people bullying her for his father, we still don't know if he lied or not (probably he didn't) but she couldn't really handle the situation and instead blamed his father for it, same right now after the scene with her mother.
I can totally understand her and is the reaction a kid, and now a teenager, I would expect to do.
She feels real, she's not just a girl that randomly becomes a key in protecting the world and blindly accepts that paper of protagonist, Yukina is actually afraid of her paper and the risks that comes with it, She's someone I can root for in the future, She's revolutionizing the mecha genro.

Yeah the handle itself is kinda funny. Not sure if I like how squiggly it looks. The blade itself is really cool though. I love the blue tint on the edge which makes it look like it's really hot. They got the cutting motions down really well. There's a bit of resistence as it sinks into the enemy, then a snap as it gives way. The fights are creative in how they use these too, like that mecha that could fold it's sword in order to snap onto another sword and take it.

Same here. The nanomachine thing was just explained an episode or two ago but I liked how it wasn't just "this blade is super super hot/vibrates/is made of alien alloy/is magic, I don't gotta explain shit/we just don't know". It makes for better hacking and slashing scenes because of that slight resistance but also reasonably creates situations where he's trapped with the blade inside of an enemy. Most other mecha just have a superblade that cuts through enemies like butter, except when it doesn't.
