***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, dont make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

Now here's the technique for film sticker (the thin transparent plastic ones) that some people aren't aware of: dip them in the water.
I've tried it and it works wonder. And no, we're NOT talking about waterslides.

Yes, first it will be easier to position by weakening the adhesive temporarily and maybe removing the static. And other benefit is reducing risk of air bubbles trapped under the stickers once you squeeze it with cotton bud.

I don't know where Dalong stash that page now. But anyway, the rest of them are just MG catalog up to no 99. And some interview (is that Kawaguchi? I have no idea).

Don't wanna interrupt the dump but I got bored and went back to this thing. I can't say I'm wild about it but it's... something. It doesn't feel right to call it a ZZ variant anymore. It's just an experiment in how to make the ZZ look generic. What do you think, everybody?
>>
>>14254805
I dunno about to make it generic, but it's definitely not ZZ anymore. Where did the legs come from?
Why drop the high mega from the head?
>>
>>14254805
Don't worry I'm done dumping.

Removing the head cannon does make it generic. But the legs still screaming ZZ to me.
>>
>>14254776
>>14254780
I'm so used to seeing people go way overboard with their weathering, seeing it properly done almost looks weird now
>>
>>14254826
>>14254822
Legs and shoulders are both Silver Bullet. Since the line art for the ZZ is only ~60% its size, I had to do a ton of touch-ups and redraws for both. I'm still trying to keep a little bit of the ZZ aesthetic while making its defining features recede into the design and become subtleties (dunno if that makes sense, it's about 2AM). For example, the shoulder wings are replaced with a longer shoulder instead of cutting them off and leaving it like that. Likewise the SB legs are basically simplified ZZ legs so in effect it removed all the open gaps and moving parts and also made the knee spike simpler and less imposing. I removed the High Mega Cannon because it was too iconic and replaced it with a more generic red emblem (although I like the look of it with just the "ZZ" there to be honest) and sensor mohawk. However I needed to keep some spirit of the original part there so the sensor had to be massive. So it was. All in all it's ZZ but it's not.

I wanted to give it a backpack but nothing really fits. Maybe a regular small-sized backpack will finally look decent on the ZZ.

Also I'm getting Alex vibes from this thing. I think it's the forearms and v-fin.

Applying the dry transfer, the one you rub until it sticks.
Commonly found in MGs, you never own any?
>>
>>14254983
It's not so much that the weathering is overdone, it just doesn't look right when you consider the scale of the model. Look at some real life large machines and you'll notice how it's mostly just the edges that get worn down, and once the paint really starts to fall off it quickly becomes nothing but rusty metal.
>>
>>14254769
So the brown stuff was for weathering. What was going on in the next step and the step after with the white pencil? It's probably just because my eyesight is horrible but I don't see what that was supposed to do
>>
>>14254983
You went a little overboard
Except it's more than just a little
>>
>>14255118
I could be wrong, but I think it's called 'drybrushing' that meant to show paint wear on edges. The white pencil is probably just an alternative method to the brush and paint one.
If someone can translate the text, these pics can make a good tutorial.
>>
>>14254769
>>14254776
Am I understanding this right? Is he covering the part with brown paint, then applying green paint, then using white paint to outline the edges or something?

The brown rust effects, it's just done using a brown gundam marker then wiping?

Sorry for the newb questions, I want to make sure I'm understanding this right. I'm new to the hobby but this is the cool stuff I want to get around to doing after a while.

>>14254759
Dip dry-transfers in water?
>>
>>14255160
>then applying green paint
No, he just wipe off the brown paint excess with cotton bud soaked in thinner. So only small amount of brown paint remain to act like a subtle thin layer of dirt/mud.

It may look easy but achieving that subtlety is the most difficult part.
>>14255206
I really don't get it either. If they show that cement applied to that seam before sanding then it'd make sense. But sometimes during sanding I noticed that the dust is falling into the seam and the heat from sanding friction kinda melt down together.
Maybe they're aiming for that.
>Dip dry-transfers in water?
Not dry transfer. Film stickers, the one made from very thin plastic with adhesive on the back.
Dry transfer sheet is made in thicker plastic. Easy to distinguish.
>>
>>14255220
yeah the thing is that they're not merging a seam line per-say they're merging a panel line for no reason

I see what you mean about the sticker now, might try it on my next project

A few general criticisms: the green is too light, there's too little of it, and it's in the wrong places. With a dark color scheme using a lot of black I generally want to break it up a lot more than that, and not have a much lighter color or concentrate that color at the extremities.

When I was toying with a black/green scheme for the Unicorn this is what I ended up with.

All that mad effort and in the end the mech still looks "soft" and plasticky, especially the gun.

You know why? Because flat coat does nothing to a slight semi-translucency all plastics have (that's how we can tell plastic from metal just by looking).

Kawaguchi knows that like any good modeler, he just gives you a crutch so that you feel a little better about yourselves, but it's still a crutch. If you want your work to be respected, learn to fucking paint, there are no shortcuts.

>>

>he doesn't get the point.jpg

As any good modeler, Kawaguchi knows the struggle of beginners. So he teach something easy and not too complicated method for them so they can start to go beyond snapfit. Kind of extended version of 'one point technique" column in some gunpla manual.

The instruction doesn't mean to dictate "you must do all your models like this from now on". More like "try these easy steps to make yours look better, for starter".

Once people find the joy of doing extra work on their models, surely they will seek for more and in the end they will follow your 'muh one true way of gunpla'

>>

What are you on about? it's a standard method for loose joints.
>>
>>14255589
Super glue and nail VARNISH are methods. Plastic cement is a solvent that coating a part in won't thicken. It partially dissolves and weakens it.
>>
>>14255589
Plastic cement will melt that shit not fix it.
>>
>>14255609
>>14255602
Without contact with another part, ciment will settle into a thin layer. It doesn't make the plastic evaporates.

Backpack

Actually it's a weapon platform but whatever
>>
>>14255399
>overfuckingdone garbage weathering.jpg
>>
>>14255617
Extra thin PC does not settle into a thin layer. The majority of it evaporates and what remains is absorbed into the plastic. If coated heavily enough it will actually start deforming and melting the pladtic. You can actually make putty by dissolving styrene in plastic cement).

Superglue is what leaves a layer, as does white glue and varnish.

I intend to dive head first into painting but I don't have the money to put down on an airbrush as of yet, but I still enjoy building my kits and detailing them.
I don't build models because I need to be the best at them, or because it's a respectable hobby- I build models, THESE models because they're scaled replicas of giant robots that I watch cartoons of, and you know what?
I even like the cartoons, and sometimes I play with my robots while I watch them, so I think SUPER SERIOUS modelling needs to settle down a bit.
If someone is being a piece of shit about HURR MINE ARE GREAT, feel free to put them in their place, but otherwise all this discussion is wasted effort. Mine might not be the greatest- so I really don't post them, but I still like them, and they're still mine.

>>
>>14256578
Honestly, I only got into gunpla building because I watched all the Gundam series and I liked them enough to build models of a lot of the cool robots in them.
I try my best with the means I have - basically just a hobby knife, precision cutters, sanding paper of various grits, files and gundam panel lining markers - and I always strive to improve within the limited capacity that I can.
I don't think my kits will look as good as someone who builds these kits because they're an "expert super serious modeler" who just like the designs or construction, but don't care to watch the anime the anime.
I'll just snap them together to the best of my ability as a way of showing my appreciation of the show and the design, and simply because I enjoy building them.
So every time I pass it on my shelf I'll think "I liked the show that robot is from".
>>
>>14256827

For the most part you should be good. Don't be afraid to get in a little close to the panels you want darkened.

When applying the coat of blue, do it in layers, you want the area around the panels softened but you don't want to put so much paint on that you lose all of the preshading you did.

The goal is to have the recessed area darker than the rest of the kit as light is unable to hit it. You can always go back into with a panel wash

>But why are there two GM heads?
One of the pilots (redheaded girl, forgot the name) in 08th MS Team gets her V-fin head blown off partway through the series and has it replaced with a GM head. So I figure it's in there so tired can build it as her "Custom GM Head-Type." No idea what the other head is for. Maybe it's a surplus as a result of using runners from earlier kits.

Expanded universe materials imply that other crews give her shit about it, but that the supply chain on replacement parts for Ground-Types is so shitty that custom repair jobs like her GM head or the protagonist's 00-Custom aren't terribly uncommon. Ground Types are sort of a hodgepodge of GM chassis elements, new components, and surplus RGX-78 replacement parts.

That's my grail kit, by the way. I love the hover trucks.

>Bandai and their high quality and engineering
I originally did a lot of scale modeling for tabletop wargaming before I started fooling around with Gunpla. Holy shit Bandai's engineering is amazing by comparison. Games Workshop kits would regularly be misaligned casts, generating huge mold lines over every past, warped, suffering from lost/softened detail, etc. And that was plastic kits from the biggest manufacturer. Models made of white metal or resin, or kits from other companies would be even worse. I assumed it was just per for the course. I'd start every kit assuming that I'd have to do a ton of sanding, gap-filling, and heat-bending.

I put together my first HGUC kit about a year ago and was flabbergasted with how easy it was. All the casts were sharp, all the parts fit together.

For me, Gunpla is a relaxation exercise. Being able to put a HGUC kit together in about an afternoon is kind of a Zen feeling for me. Don't have to think about it a whole lot. Just take my time, follow the instructions, and work through it slowly and carefully. Enjoy seeing the robot take shape part by part. Very satisfying, very relaxing. :)

You should really take the plunge and just try. My very first attempt was the HGCE Strike and I ruined that immensely. If people can be great off the bat, sure, but it still means something to slowly learn and keep trying to improve.

Then again, I also kinda wish I was satisfied with straightbuilding so I didn't feel like having to paint every kit I do from now on, haha.

>>
>>14256940
The articulation itself is fine, albeit basic, but the kit literally falls apart in your hand if you try to move it because the parts fit is not that great, even with glue.
>>
>>14257209
I don't feel satisfied to straightbuild either, it feel kinda miss.

The problem is i just really like gundam g, it simple and bit boxy yet still have badass and menacing altitude in them, feels like a true war machine, also much of their kit is good and have many options. So ruined it feels kinda bad.

But yes, you right, i must gather courage to paint them. Maybe i'll start to do experimentation on Barbatos first.

That's the 1/100. I've heard the 1/144 is better and more solid because it's newer, but I prefer 1/100 scale. It's massive even for a 1/100 though, like taller than Unicorn, so I think the 1/144 should be around the same size as the MG Wing Gundams.

It's a novice attempt at painting. The runner section on the right is blue, previous owner tried to mask it with base white without primer. You can see the blue plastic through the streaking. Honestly might want to take some paint thinner to it to clear off the old stuff, wash, and then reprime.

Also, I'll be using RG Quanta and HG Transient, since they both have shiny stickers under their colored clear parts.

You could get a Kampfer, it comes with plenty shotguns.

I remember the doc used to recommend either the Exia/00-Raiser and/or the Shining/God as good beginner gunpla, but i dont see them any more? Were they removed.

Also, the guide heavily recommends the RX-78-2 but the ver 3.0 looks much higher quality, is that true? I'm not great at gunpla building but I managed to assemble an MG Turn A so I can at least accomplish something if I try hard enough.

What kind of based do you like, clear or blocked colours? With most figures I like clear bases, but Gundam ones are covered in lines and shit. I'm feeling like I should get some grey/black bases even though I hate them on every other model line, I just don't know how they look next to the actual figs, especially the darker ones like the rick dom.

Hey /m/, sorry for the stupid question, but I just got a HG Hyaku Shiki (my third kit), and got no idea how to apply the shoulder decals, are they waterslides?
>>

Dry transfers.
You can tape it against the part(mind which way the decal is facing, otherwise you'll get the decal stuck on tape and not usable) and then you take something and rub it with a bit of force and it'll go onto the model.

The MG 3.0 is basically an upscaled RG.

The MG Origin actually comes with all parts to give it standard RX-78-2 layout and is fairly decent.

Need help identifying this decal, it's from the GM Custom. The one in the circle. It has like a chameleon and the letters LV. I'm leaning towards thinking it's a La Vie en Rose decal, but it doesn't ring any bells, and doesn't explain the chameleon

Those are dry transfers. They're a real pain in the ass to apply.

You have 2 different options:

1.) Cut out the decal but leave some of the white area exposed. Then put tape around the edges to keep the decal in place. I found that using something like a coin helps to rub the decal into place. You should see it kind of fade as it adheres to the surface. You can also carefully lift it to see if everything has transferred.

2.) Try to look for some after-market waterslide decals

I think it's the logo of the 4th MS team that South Burning, Monsha, and those other guys are from
>>
>>14259851

Personally I use transparent tape all over the decal, makes it easier to place it correctly.

Does make it come off a little harder though, i suppose. Usually a coin rub is still enough though.

Huh. I can only find like one or two pictures of it online when I google it. Thanks though

Most of my furniture and shelving is black, so I normally use black action bases or stands. I have a clear Action Base 1, but it looks weird on black, likely because of the mechanical detailing like you mentioned. I think Figma stands look fine with most High Grades, though. Pic somewhat related.

Is it true Derringer said we're getting more Thunderbolt HG?

I'm not sure where else I could post about this, this seems like a good place to start even though its not exactly a plamo I figure people here might have experience with this type of connector. I am trying to assemble the GSC alloy tachikoma, but the arms are giving me a lot of trouble.
Does anyone have any experience with these types of sockets/pronged connectors?

Attempting to force it in has got me nowhere but the way the socket area is designed makes it too hard to squish the prongs together to make it smaller before inserting, I've tried using tweezers and everything to push them but they require a lot of force to close completely and it just makes it difficult to push in while holding them

I've heard Vallejo's primers are rather crap.
>>
Where do you guys buy paints?
No one site has all the colors I need and I'm sick of splitting orders between sites for one or two colors.
I use Mr. color btw
>>
>>14260031

I use vallejos, and I don't even use primers. Because I never deviate wildly from the original color scheme, and I don't manhandle my shit when I'm done with it.

local hobby shop, has everything and even if their gunpla prices are crap, paints and tool prices are on par with any site.

I was so hyped to build my own Graze custom. Went and bought the kit, the option sets, paints and everything. Busted out my tools and fixed up my worktable, and was so pumped to work on my first kit in a couple years or so. I was pretty into it, but then finals and other life shit came up, and I ended up having to set it aside for a little. No money for summer classes, and I got no job, so I'm pretty much a NEET all this summer, with all the time in the world, and I cannot for the life of me, get myself to work on my Graze. What do you guys do when you get this builder's block?

A bit late to answer but there's an option piece that clips onto the carapace like so and sticks into the handle.
