this seems like the best place to ask this question since there are so many conflicting messages elsewhere online

What is the best release to watch for Robotech? I'm willing to buy DVD or pay for whatever it is, so I'm not grubbing for a torrent.

thanks all, really looking forward to experiencing the whole series

There is no best version of Robotech. All versions suck. Just buy the least costly set you happen to come across and watch it on a 14 inch monitor. Anything bigger and you'd wish you hadn't thrown the money in the toilet.

Not even trolling, just wanna watch it and since I'm a little OCD got thrown off by the reviews complaining how the sounds were changed and some other things for the remasters, otherwise I would have gone ahead and not needed to ask at all.

You can look online at the reviews yourself and all the complaints people have, I just thought /m/ would know best which version would be most legit to watch.

>Crackle

And as it turns out, Crackle is only accessible to bits and pieces of Latin America, Australia, and Europe. Even if you're in these required zones, and you are not in the US or Canada, you only get a fraction of Crackle's streaming library. This apparently doesn't include Robotech, because everyone in Spanish speaking countries are complaining left and right on Harmony Gold's Facebook announcement on Crackle that they can't see shit on the website from their respected regions.

Harmony Gold didn't even make sure that their core audience will have access to Sony's three-ring circus of a streaming service, and other fans aren't getting into it because of the constant sleezy commercials inserts and cite that they already own the numerous versions of it on DVD. Not to mention that the episodes being featured are from the godawful "remastered" edition which completely re-edited the entire series to public domain soundbytes in an attempt to upcale it to stereo, and they are all the heavily censored TV syndicated pussy version where no real violence or nudity is allowed. This whole venture is useless.

Palladium hired Ninja Division (Super Dungeon Explore, Relic Knights, and several other minis games) to run their kickstarter for Robotech RPG Tactics, a miniatures game. No one from Palladium posted during the entire campaign, making it really look like Ninja Division had licensed the game from Palladium. Once the campaign was over and everyone paid, Ninja Division was done and gone. The bait and switch was successful and Palladium had 1.4 million in backer Jewgolds.

Palladium all of a sudden had more money than they make in 2-3 years in their hands and pissed it away putting out several delayed books and barely managed to get about 1/3 of the Robotech game out, splitting the game into two waves to do so. The backers haven't seen shit about Wave 2 for nearly a year and a half and have become very very toxic customers.

Kevin Siembieda, the owner of Palladium and liar extraordinaire, got hit by a car last week and his number one stoolie told everyone in the weekly email spam. Thus the humorous belief that an irate backer ran ole Kevvy down in a fit of rage, my bet would be on the guy that posted "GIVE ME WAVE 2!!!!!!!1!ONE!" two hundred times on the kickstarter page.

Of course they are, they're 'excited' about all sorts of things that they believe are a significant update to the fandom, right down to calendars and skateboards. Even trying to push that Love Live Alive and Robotech/Voltron shit on people despite the fact that nobody likes them.

The only time where these panels of theirs ever get any traction at all is when they make specific announcements beforehand that voice actors are showing up, or they are dragging in the current no-names to discuss the latest "developments" for an otherwise soon-to-be-dead project. That, and they love toting around their infamous 'mystery box' prizes to which they'll reward a select group of people they call on for questions which range from some 1 of 1000 Veritech toys from Toynami, some DVDs, to office supplies: I actually feel sorry for the one girl in a NY Comicon Robotech panel where she didn't get a prize until after the Q&A was over (they apparently glossed over her), to which Kevin Mckeever just gives her a mousepad and coffee mug after having given away all the high-tier prizes to people who asked very skeptical questions on where the franchise was going as a "no hard feelings" gesture to shut them up. And she was one of the few who asked an optimistic question too.

There was another panel, I think in 2012, where Kevin and Tommy were held up in what looked like a cramped collage classroom with an overhead projector trying to get the word out on the a collaborative Korean knock-off project called Deep Sea 7, while handing out stray issues of the Robotech Wilstorm comics and signed copies of Art of Shadow Chronicles to which they invited people to come up and take what they wanted while Yune explained the company's yearly gameplan. Only a few people came up, and most just looked at what was on the table and sat back down. A few minutes after nobody else walked up, Kevin just looks around with this expression "Seriously, nobody wants anything?"

What to know further?

Robotech is also not their only entertainment property. They actually buy rights to cheap movies and TV Shows and resell them.

http://www.harmonygold.com/catalog/

Apart from Robotech, they also aquire the rights to cheap South Korean television shows with things like Tangoo and Ullashong and Deep Sea 7. The sad part is, Harmony Gold is trying REALLY hard to get Deep Sea 7 some recognition as they actually called up all their Robotech VA's to dub it and showcased it at some of their bigger convention appearances. Needless to say, anyone who saw it had absolutely no idea what the fuck they were watching.

To me, Macross 2 suffers from pretty much the same problem as Robotech. It's a dead stale universe. In every kawamori macross show after DYRL, the macross universe has expanded, the human race is spreading across the stars. In macross 2 they're stagnant, sticking to earth, building bigger macrosses that's zentradi ships strapped to each other.

Robotech should be floating on a torrent tracker somewhere. Try BakaBT or use torrentz.eu
>>
>>14255385
I CAN and HAVE torrented it. But I'd prefer to support the Japanese studios while simultaneously not spending several hundred dollars on the overpriced Japanese BD release.
I like to actually own my shit, and just to have the show on my shelf, i ended up buying a damn shitty bootleg because it was the only way to get the series physically for under 100 dollars, and it looks like shit.
>>14255420
I never said i wanted to torrent Robotech.
>>14255437
As I've said, collecting something physically matters to me. And no I'm not importing it because like pretty much everyone else, I'd prefer not paying over 300 dollars to buy something that fundamentally isn't worth that much.

And yes, in macross' case the RT edits make it inferior, mainly because there are several events in the latter third of the show that make no sense because of shit like "protoculture factories" etc. Also it's more heavily censored.
>>

Anime BD prices in Japan are fucking robbery. No sane person wants to buy those.

why do you even bother arguing for the existance of robotech or HG? They're immoral and frankly embarrassing existences that should be concided to history. Sure it's nothing to get riled up over. Let's just agree they should be buried and move on
>>
>>14255567
To support the studios while getting the highest quality release there is, which can be watched forever. And it probably doesn't matter to newer anime fans but physical releases are always nice to have.

I don't think RT fans should be hated so much as pitied. They're getting fucked over by assholes who don't give a rat's ass about them.

I do think that any RT sperglord who knows exactly what sort of crap HG has been pulling and tries to whitewash them deserves all the contempt in the world. Ignorance is not innocence.

>>14255585

Robotech is a dead stagnant franchise. HG is necromancer firm. The dying breed are Robotech fans. If the necromancer dies too, the zombie can be put to rest, and macross can be spread outside japan without zombie cockblocking

>prefer to support the Japanese studios while simultaneously not spending several hundred dollars on the overpriced Japanese BD release.
And if this thread is any indication, you chose to support the japanese studios by... buying unofficial copies?

I'll tell you why the japanese BDs are "overpriced".
Because there isn't enough people buying. Anime is niche as fuck.
Why are movies like Lord of the Rings or whatever able to put out BDs with more content and yet be cheaper?
Because they simply got a lot more people buying those BDs. When you have a lot of people buying, you can afford to lower the price, because the amount of people buying makes up for the lower price.
When you don't have enough people buying, the price needs to be higher to make up for the lesser number of people buying your shit.

If you want to show your support for the studios, save up now and buy the official BDs later.

>>14255662
>Most anons will just pirate instead of actually buy anything.
Alternatively, they don't buy the BDs but instead show their support by buying plamo and figurines.
>>
>>14255658
>idol shit versus nostalgia fags
Nigger have you been watching delta? There's still space jets and dog fighting.
>>
>>14255666
That's still commendable since they're consuming merchandise attributed to whatever anime franchise they watch.

Anime fans in the West are really spoiled. They think that they have this inherent right to stream and/or DL stuff that people actually took the time to make. That's what free enterprise is all about.
>>
>>14255662
Obviously, yeah. And I don't mind it. But nobody should say that someone else SHOULDN'T pay for it or expect it at a non-rape price. I even torrent some things I could buy if I wanted to but I do try to save up to buy the releases.
>>
>>14251866
Ironically, RT fans like Macross 2 because it can "fit" within their narrative.
>>
Actually have the whole of frontier on blu ray. Delta will even have subtitles, though I don't need them, it's nice whenever I show it someone who does need em
>>
>>14255666
It's expensive because every anime in Japan is overpriced.
Gundam 0079was 300 Dollars in Japan and only 100 here, divided into two sets, each one at 50 dollars.
I only bought the unofficial dvd to put it on my shelf and to have access to the English dub, which i plan to synchronize to 1080p video and possibly encode a dual audio version.
I would gladly support the Japanese studio if they didn't overcharge. No matter how little the blu rays sell, charging as much as they do won't help, if anything it hurts sales.
Why the fuck should i have to put aside more than one whole paycheck to buy a fuckin tv show?
>>14255677
I've bought a revoltech of the vf 1j valkyrie for example.
>>
>>14255666
I know exactly why it happens. An anime can be considered a success at just a couple thousand BD purchases. But that doesn't make the price tolerable. The prices are aimed at NEETs and otakus who use all of their disposable cash on anime and I don't have that to spend. But obviously they still make money off of western releases so I'll support that when I can.
>>
>>14255691

Anime is expensive in Japan.

Why should it be cheaper elsewhere? Kinda fucks over the Nipponese fans who are the real target audience.

The way I look at it is that companies should just not fuck their fans over and otaku fuckasses shouldn't be blowing that money in the first place. It's not my fault their getting screwed. The release on Crackle had me feeling a little nostalgia for Robotech after all these years (like most I graduated to Macross 15 years ago) but that streaming service is shit and who wants to support HG. Oh, you mean Robotech Tactics? Didn't know they bailed on some of what they promised. LOL!

Do they even mention Shadow Rising at conventions anymore? Or is it always just the same old stupid merchandise presentations with the occasional voice actor guest? It's no wonder there's no one in the halls if they have nothing to show, why even go themselves? Does anyone bother asking about Shadow Rising or new projects or have the fans even accepted how dead the franchise is?

>>
>>14257844
I kind of wanted to see Academy (and Shadow Rising, and Sentinels (going all the way back)), but everyone knows that even if the Kickstarter was successful that the most that ever would have been released would've been that pilot. But it probably would have just been another scam, with no releases ever. So the failure of the Kickstarter was a good thing, even to Robotech fans.
>>
>>14248330
>The backers haven't seen shit about Wave 2 for nearly a year and a half and have become very very toxic customers.

Wow. Sounds like Palladium's been taking hints from R. Talsorian Games' Mike Pondsmith, who's now more than two years late with his shitty Mekton Zero bullshit.

Fans tried to squeeze as much as they could out of Harmony Gold over where Shadow Rising was going even after Academy, especially since HG kept running their mouth that production on the project would recommence over the production of the LAM that was under Warner Bros at the time, over Academy, Tommy Yune said they were working on it "RIGHT NOW" at the 2013 NYCC, and even into late 2014. In fact, there was even a time in 2008, during the whole Warner Bros. LAM confusion, where HG contacted RobotechX and various fansites about how Shadow Rising was certaintly "not dead or postponed" even though Kevin states that previous year that it was on hiatus due to the live-action movie (this is after his statement that production was working around the LAM).

https://www.robotechx.com/news/53-shadow-rising-is-not-canceled-not-postponed-part-2.html

Finally, after so many awkward convention presentations of not saying anything except when fans ask questions about it, Tommy and Kevin have stated that nothing is happening on anything unless the Sony's movie project gets finished and brings in the cash. Since that time, nobody has bothered to ask anything on SR unless someone is looking to be sarcastic.

The only "new" animation content they're focusing on right now is trying to get Deap Sea 7 wrapped up in South Korea (they're assisting with dubbing and distrbiution" so they can get it distributed into streaming sites. So I guess that means Crackle has to look forward to more useless shit added to their media list.
>>
>>14256669
Man, Robotech fans are gluttons for punishment. Don't they realize they're getting screwed over by HG, Palladium and every other group that wants to shake them down for money?
>>
>>14259599
Most of them are already onto Harmony Gold's sleazy tactics at this point. Its why they didn't support the Robotech Academy kcikstarter and threw all their millions at Palladium because they had yet to screw anyone over on the scale that they did with their own kickstarter.

In the end, the lesson learned here is: It doesn't matter if its Toynami, Palladium, or ignorant movie companies - Anyone who is crazy or desperate enough to work with Harmony Gold is a sure sign of being an equally shady asshole looking for a quick scheme to fish them out of their own problems.

Is it any surprise that HG went to Cannon Films, of all people, in the 80s to distribute Robotech The Movie for them? Like, they could find anyone else? And every else already knew Cannon's notoriously backwards movie career. Its even pretty ironic that HG got screwed over by Cannon in the end when they hijacked their and blue-balled its release unless they made it to their own standards.
>>
>>14259364
And with the film barely even in pre-production at this point that means it'll be years before any continuation or new projects are begun, if ever.
>>
>>14260175
That's also gambling on whether or not this movie is going to be a success.

Its real funny how they're acting like this proposed movie is in the best of hands with the crew lined up: Sony is in some pretty deep shit as it is in the movie department with their franchises not catching on to the public and making enough money or positive attention, along with serious privacy and security breaches that have caused embarrassing amounts of email and script leaks within the company. The icing on the cake here is that one of the producers, Mark Canton, was originally chairman at Sony before he was fired due his involvement with Last Action Hero, a movie that was supposed to introduce Sony Pictures Entertainment's film debut in the early 90s and ended in disaster because of Canton's reckless spending (he paid for the negative responses of the test screeners be kept from the public and Sony officials), poor judgement, and completely ego-fueled delusions that the movie was a guaranteed box-office winner and success over Jurassic Park. Views that he still shares to this day even after the movie lost Sony millions and has caused him to be completely disowned by them. The fact that this man is going to get involved with Sony again on a enormous copyright screw of a franchise like Robotech has got to be one of the biggest ironies in film history.
>>
>>14260486
Last Action Hero was actually good.
>>
So how are the novels if one really wants to experience more Robotech? I generally like spacey sci-fi, and have enjoyed a few of the Luceno Star Wars books too.
>>
>>14260517
It wasn't bad as a movie. But financially it was horrible. It started out with a budget of $85 million and rose to $120 million because of increased actor cameos, special effects, and delays with editing and post because they let Arnold go insane with heading the project and nobody could convince Canton that things were financially going sour. It ended up grossing $50 million domestic.
>>
>>14260553
not bad

it has a weird thing where they decided that the valks have brain interface things (this was before Plus was made) that help to control them
and they get into some odd territory with bears when they go off on their own

but as far as novels with robot fights they're definitely one of them
