It's fucking true though. Expecting a 1-on-1 honorable duel is just another way to get shot down and increase the casualties on your side. And it wouldn't be much of a casualty either because you'd be a fucking idiot for not shooting the other guy in the back the first chance you get.

In war, "fair" means that everybody on your side comes home safe and alive. Fuck the others.

The only time you should expect 1 on 1 duels is against a worthy opponent. It requires a very specific dynamic, one where each person involved know the reputation of the other and the knowledge that you are similar ideals even if on opposing sides.

Its not something you should go into battle expecting. Most participants in the battle are just trying to survive and won't have time to stop and think about your honor code.

>>
>>14134109
Macross likes their upgrades.

In fact, the problem they encountered was that old designs aren't friendly to new hardware.
Like, the VF-1X, they added extra weight so the new parts can work with it and the weight didn't really matter because of the extra engine power.

The VF-171EX had VF-19 engines.

I think what he turned off was the automatic instability corrector, along with Mirage's training controls.
As Mirage mentioned, the Valkerye (Much like a real-world F-16) is aerodynamically unstable for increased maneuverability. Ordinarily, the on-board computer would correct any unmotivated deviations from the flight path, but turned off, Hayate went into a spin.
Turning off the fly-by-wire would mean losing all control over the Valk, including the computer itself

I don't know if the 19 originally had assists at all, before Isamu got his hands on it, it's most notable achievement was killing test pilots

I think they eventually used difficulty of use as the reason the VF-171 replaced the VF-11 instead of the 19 as planned.

Actually wasn't that what made the VF-25 so shit-hot, it's basically awesome like a 19 but without needing a god tier pilot in it?
>>
>>14134333
>I don't know if the 19 originally had assists at all, before Isamu got his hands on it, it's most notable achievement was killing test pilots
it was killing pilots because the company decided to eschew control over somewhat improved performance, to get an edge in the competition. the problem was that they didn't have a good enough pilot to show off the YF-19 until isamu came along

macross mecha manual says the production VF-19 models changed it back so it's safer for pilots to operate, though

>Actually wasn't that what made the VF-25 so shit-hot, it's basically awesome like a 19 but without needing a god tier pilot in it?
Not quite. the YF-24 family's claim to fame was the integration of the ICS which dampens G-forces. Before there was a hard limit to just how much acceleration a manned fighter could practically do without killing the pilot. The products of Project Super Nova were already capable of delivering that much acceleration, but not safely as demonstrated by Guld.

The ICS blew that wide open and allowed manned fighters to pull even crazier performance.
>>
>>14134457
Simple comparision- supernova VFs couldatch then new Ghost performance, and win in one to one duels half the time.

No, the EX-Gear doesn't sit on the pilot while in the cockpit; it moves off and behind the pilot's shoulders so that the pilot has greater flexibility. Rewatch the first episode of Frontier when Alto climbs into the VF-25. the EX-Gear visibly releases his legs and arms when he docks.

ex-gear besides doubling as power armor and a g-force restrictor (somehow) is basically what they use to bail out if shit goes bad. when they're flying afaik there are no parts thatphysically restrain them, it locks around the pilot when they need to eject or something

That woudl mean that they woudl be tossed around inside cockpits with every maneuver.

>Same goes for boyband bishi guys that dont even have exgear.
They're wearing full pilot suits with helmets, as seen in the Opening. All that in-cockpit shot is entirely holographic; not just the cockpit view (which would have to be digitally rendered since there's no cockpit glass on the sides), but their suits as well, just like the Walkure idol outfits.

I still got a lot more time off (being bed-ridden mid-vacation ain't fun) so i'll probably pick up on some other show.

Though atm i'm dying from laughter at Ozma's face as he let Ranka get scouted.

Either him or Chuck, to give Hayate motivation to pull that trigger. Arad's survival probably isn't too high either. But putting Messer up against Lord Keith when Keith will inevitably be flying against Hayate in ep 1 seems to be a pretty obvious sign he's going to bite it. The only way it'd be more obvious is if he was eating pineapple salad in the opening. He's not, I checked. He's having tea and dim sum. Maybe with pineapples in them?

How is seven ? Are there enough cool dogfights ?
>>
>>14139309
Projecting a hologram of your face without a helmet seems like a huge waste of a fighter's processing power.
>>
>>14139757
7 is, by far, the wierdest Macross series and has definitely the least traditional dogfighting of any Macross works. The MC pilots his valkyrie using a guitar, refuses to shoot down his opponents, and spends 40 episodes trying to convince a mountain and a bunch of space vampires to be moved with his SONG.

It also has an absolutely fantastic soundtrack, is heavily influenced by mid-1990s San Francisco Culture, and has great supporting roles by characters from SDF Macross. It also has two great OVAs about giant-space-women-with-guitars and Space-Moby Dick. M7 is also a quite important in-universe plot point for Frontier and Delta.

If that's not really for you, then just watch the episode Fleet of the Strongest Women. It doesn't really fit into the arc of the rest of the main plot of the series so you won't spoil anything, but it succinctly sums up the entire series in a single episode.
>>
>>14139757
>Are there enough cool dogfights ?
There's not many, most of the battles are done in battroid mode. There's also fucktons of stock footage, so you're watching the same battle repeat itself through the series.
>>
>>14139769
Is actually using a hologram so it looks like they don't have helmets
For what reason? i dont know
>>
>>14139769

Not if your fighter has so much processing power that even with that it has loads to spare. It's the future anon, and holograms are not only commonplace, they have been around with decades. Their computers are almost certainly able to handle them without issue, even on a jet whose computers are doing lots of other stuff too.
>>
>>14139801
I have a hard time imagining a plane with so much processing power that it wastes processing power generating a picture of people's heads on their helmets. "They hate helmets because they love the wind" would make more sense to me than "holograms of their heads."
>>
>>14131727
>>14131818
>>14131970
would the three of you massive fags shut the fuck up
>>
>>14139855

You can make a viable 3D headset out of a mobile phone barely bigger than a credit card in this day and age anon. Holograms probably don't use much more in their future, so all the plane has to do is put at least one extra computer in the cockpit somewhere to do it.
>>
>>14134612
its been that way for quite a while
>>
>>14139855
We almost have the excess computing power to do full HUDs in the real world right now. In both Frontier and Delta we see an enormous variety of holographic and AI technology going to use in the most mundane of things (Ranka's and Sheryl's cell phones, somehow stuffing a holoprojector that can produce massive screens and lights in a variety of different areas as an afterthought software patch into a Valkyrie in ep 12 of Frontier as well as both Frontier movies)

It's sort of like a comparison with MREs. Do we really need soldiers to have beef teriyaki and meatloaf with gravy meals that self-heat in minutes? Wouldn't they be just as well off with those disguisting tasting Russian cans? Well, why not? We have an abundance of tech and industry to allow some creature comforts even on the battlefield.
>>
>>14139930

Walkure also managed to put a holographic copy of Freyja's costume on her once she was part of the group. She wore no special outfit to facilitate it - it just appeared on her. Which means it's either built in to every tram as an incidental thing, or so small every bit of clothing has them and can be networked to or something.
>>
>>14139757
7 is absolutely not the series you watch for dogfights
>>
>>14139994
>>14139855
Also, look at the advertisement Freya holds up in the first episode. It clearly has holographic animated parts in it, even when crumpled and whatnot. EVERYTHING apparently has super tech in it.

>>
>>14139994
My guess is that it was a special tram that they were using for the surprise test. It would also make faking the Vars syndrome easier if you can just digitize the blood and popping veins rather than resorting to ancient makeup technology.
>>
>>14140151
The fake blood was conventional, though.
>>
>>14140506

The effects kind of had to be, given the chance Freyja would tiuch him at some point - since touch isn't fooled by holograms. And she did touch his face if I recall.
>>
>>14139994
https://youtu.be/kKlQ7WDbs5s?t=2m12s
Wouldn't be unheard of. During one of Ranka's concert she managed to project outfits on her audience with holograms.

VF-27 to VF-29 were outright SV-51 wannabes, which was most apparent with the Durandal being literally notExcalibur.

Oh but it is.
Fold space is pretty much only non hard gimmick, everything else is explained in details. Physics works as usual, planes behave as they should, there is NO understanding unless Basara is involved.
It is as hard as Gundam or better, Gunbuster really, somewhere in the middle of scale, so that realism doesn't comes into conflict with narration.
>>
Hayate and Bellri have to end up as bash brothers in SRW.
>>
>>14145934
Some stunts VFs do are pushing Gs and should turn pilots into soup but its hand waived because alien tech
>>
>>14145957
Until Frontier they did exactly that, as Gould showed us what happens when limiters are removed. And ICS is another application of fold technology.
>>
>>14145966
Like I said no real detailed explanation other than we use alien tech to store inertia in another dimension. It has no basis in reality. But we accept it because its not important to Macross overall story and themes.
>>
>>14145955
Only if it means Greco and Delta will be in every single SRW for the next 6 games
>>
>>14145980
Well, this is major 'sin' of modern sci-fi. Even relatively hard mainsteam stories, say Expanse, still cheat with alien tech. Thing is, writing good story in HARD setting is, well, hard. Not exiting enough to sell. If you want hard stories, all you can really get are niche products hidden here and there and online projects/fanfictions. And /tg/, for brave ones.

Macross is nowhere near "hard" sci-fi. Almost no "sci-fi" is "hard" or even near hard. If you have faster-than-light travel, you cannot be "hard" science (since, as far as we know, doing so directly implicates time travel, and breaks cause and effect: rather than a lit stove causing a house to catch on fire and burning to ashes, faster-than-light travel implies that a bunch of ashes spontaneously could reorient into a house and then make a boiling stove. It's ridiculous, at least from our understanding of how the world works)

- Overtech materials -> even the VF-0 has power-to-weight ratios that are simply not possible with current material densities and miniaturization of power plants. The valkyries clearly use reaction mass for thrust, yet its fuel must be something exotic as no fuel combination known to humanity has enough specific impulse to carry a fighter-sized craft in SSTO without it being >80% fuel by mass.
- Inertial storage -> no basis in real science
- Micloning -> blatant violation of conservation of mass
- Zentradi themselves are not viable via simple square-cube law.
- Also, aliens. Should be out there, but until we encounter them, totally not a thing.
- YAK DECULTURE -> no known neural sensors exist that are effected by magical sub-space waves, nor would there be, since evolution is a sound theory and we're apparently not left here by precusror protoculture.
>>
Fold transportation, Fold waves, Fold basically anything is literally just space magic. No universe with that in it can be considered hard anything. It just looks really cool.

Not if the micronizing/macronizing machines has a storage of organic material to build the macronized/micronized body from. Frontier had a scene where they conducted a funeral that ended in dumping the body into what appears to be a micro/macronizing machine.

Fold tech is not exactly purely going fast into FTL speeds though. They enter another dimension and travel there then get out after reaching the destination. Still, we can't enter another dimension in this shitty world of ours so it still counts as soft sci-fi I guess.

Aliens are in a grey zone, imo. There probably is life outside in this huge universe, but we haven't seen them yet. Aliens are possible.

>YAK DECULTURE
The backstory of the whole Macross-verse started with a precursor race. The "humans" in Macross having slightly different biology due to Protoculture fucking around is kind of justified.
Besides, if you think about it, there are most probably very little "pure" humans left, the baseline of what is "human" changing slightly due to humanity having babies with the other races(who might be sensitive to fold waves) is somewhat possible.
>>
>>14146296
>Frontier had a scene where they conducted a funeral that ended in dumping the body into what appears to be a micro/macronizing machine.
I'm pretty sure that isn't what that was
>>
>>14146296
And people keep forgetting Macross has mass cloning which made humans the majority. Straight up cloned as adults like Zentradi.

President Glass has a clone brother cabbie as seen on an episode of Macross Frontier.
>>
>>14146500
And apparently Guld has a clone that works as a truck driver in 7
>>
>>14146500
Still, mixing with the other races, and the fact that even parts of the original human population like the people on the Mayan islands in Zero had fold sensitivity.
The mass cloning would have spread the fold sensitivity gene out and possibly made a larger amount of people sensitive to fold shenanigans.

And if that fails, there's always the option of giving people a small piece of fold quartz for the instant ability to somewhat detect fold waves.
