Many of the Victory era mobile suits were designed as combiners that could easily come apart or redock.
By having a beam mace that extends it's laser you are more likely to damage multiple sections rather than just piercing one part and have the unit just purge the damaged parts.

so you're trading the precision and length of a beam sabre for the wider cross section of a mace
that sorta only makes sense if the beam sabre is only used for stabbing and thrusts, though. a wide slash can cut more than deep enough to affect internal components, and depending on direction of swing and where it connects, it could slash through multiple parts due to longer reach
really, the only useful gimmick that fuala's beam spike mace had was that the points could unexpectedly extend, catching the enemy unaware when they thought they got away from the beam mace's short reach

The beam Mace on the Gengaozo was pretty cool.

Because the blades on the beam can extend and can be used to suprise your enemies.
For example, you can block the beam mace with your beam saber, and one of the blades will extend out and hit you anyway.
