Given the new unicorn book that was just released, the fact that it's been announced that there'll be more short stories that take place during that period of the UC, and the very fact that the vol. 11 jacket wrap-around has a quote by the author saying something like 'a new volume along with the anime reairing, I wonder if something's coming', I wouldn't be surprised if there was new material along with the anime, other than fixes and edits.

Apparently they're doing this because the show that was in this timeslot previously bombed hard and was cancelled, and Sunrise are contractually obligated to fill it or something like that.

Over the course of the story, you learn some trivial elements from what came before it, but none of the character arcs and the overall narrative absolutely require that you know what happened.
The one exclusion to this would be the portrait of Amuro which is just kinda there.
The Marida mind-fuckery coupled with Zimmerman's flashbacks are all the characterization needed there.
I'm not trying to suggest that knowledge of UC before hand won't improve (or diminish--as seems often is the case) your Unicorn experience, but it holds up as a self-contained work.

The colony they're in isn't complete, doesn't have mirrors or windows. So it uses artificial light for its day cycle. Mineva gets suspended in the central area right near the lighting, so if she'd stayed up there she would have been burnt to a crisp. It comes online right as he's closing the hatch.

Huh, I thought he was the best Gundam pilot personally.
For me he was one of the most psychologically balanced protagonists, and came to a conclusion that I resonate more than other protagonists.
I also liked that he was one of the most passifict pilots along with Kamille, but the NT-D system made him go postal to actually get shit done.
