It's not usually a boarding thing IMO just animation. Things like that are real "quality" as opposed to meme QUALITY.
For example, the whole of the GM's first scene with Char's Z'Gok has it alternating between holding a Beam Spray gun and a normal Beam Rifle. Earlier on you also had the Gundam swapping between its rifle and bazooka.
