Who's your favorite mecha designer, /m/?

It might be a generic answer, but I'd have to say Obari.

Seriously though, mine would probably be Kunio Okawara. Especially when Obari then does the animation designs based on his original artwork.

Izubuchi. In particular, I love the stuff from Patlabor and Gundam 0080.

Alexander Iglesias(Flyingdebris) too for his high detail battletech art and some of the design makeovers. I really like the Raven, Commando, and Centurion he did for MWO.

That's why it has inverted legs, to make it balanced on the ground while firing.

Now if your gundam would fire in "space", it would fly away without stopping. And on the ground your giant ass probably wouldn't even move, cause it has inappropriately big sizes.

Same. Anyone who makes fat, evil looking machines is good in my book.
He isn't really a mecha designer, but this Ash Wood guy made his own interpretation of the Zaku.
>>
>>13928401
Most real world military vehicles aren't this boxy and styleless. You have to really try to make something this ugly.
>>
>>13928552
Sigh. I guess I'll bite as well.

I also like Battletech. Especially the FD and Shimmy redesigns. And quite a lot of the original old goofy lineart mech have a certain charm.

Also Battletech has "planes with legs" and most Battletech designs are based on Macross Destroids and Okawara's Dougram designs so stop acting like everything Mechwarrior has is made by realistic engineering in mind, even if you are a troll.

And by aerodynamics I mean they appear aerodynamic. In reality I know they are not. But having flying mechs with more rounded surfaces is somewhat more believable than expecting literal bricks to be superior to planes.

It was only like that in the beginning (pic related).

They later got rid of all macross and other weeb themed vehicles, when mechwarrior series came out. They were forced to get rid of them because of legal reasons.

>you are a troll
No, its just whole board seems to never discuss non-japanese mechs.

>But having flying mechs with more rounded surfaces is somewhat more believable than expecting literal bricks to be superior to planes.
Still, plane "spreading its legs" would instantly lose its momentum and go into rolling. Western sci-fi is better cause it never forgets about realism.
>>
>>13928661
Western shit is no fun and only has dull gray, green, white or black color.
>>
Always fun to see a weeb come along and be a westaboo on this weeb board
>>
>>13928661
I agree that western mechs are needlessly shunned in /m/. Though I really don't categorize designs as western or eastern. Both have all kinds ideas for designs.

Still, I thought you as a troll at first but you really seem to be stupid enough to think that all western (read: Battletech) designs are by default more realistic.

>Still, plane "spreading its legs" would instantly lose its momentum and go into rolling.
That's kinda the point. Switching to gerwalk midflight acts as a huge airbrake and enables the VFs to do fancy maneuvering. Why is the machine stable during that and why aren't the legs being ripped of? It's overtechnology, ain't gonna explain shit. Just like Battletech has mechs that have jump jets in their backs, which would cause them to faceplant the moment they are fired. But so does Gundams.

I'm just saying that mecha designers aren't engineers and anime and video game mecha are by no means realistic. There are just some detailed features that give the appearance of realism within the setting of a particular mecha. And Battletech or other western settings aren't the only ones to achieve this. There are bad and good examples, which I'm too lazy to lay out here.

And sometimes unrealistic things can be fun too. Widen your views a bit instead of klinging to a narrow mindset of that only "realistic" mecha are allowed.
>>
>>13928661
>would instantly lose its momentum
>never forgets about realism
Let's not be too silly, here. Nothing loses momentum instantly, thank you very much Isaac Newton. The legs would create a huge amount of drag and would reduce the effectiveness of the lifting surface. This maneuver, however, is pretty much exclusively used to slow the plane down *on purpose*.

But in the really real world, there is absolutely no advantage to build a robot with an extremely high center of gravity and a huge forward silhouette. A three meter tall tank is simply a smaller target to hit than an eighteen meter robot. Treads are simply more stable than legs. Low center of gravity is simply more stable than high center of gravity (ask an Ewok). Battletech chicken-walkers are just as patently absurd as VFs or Gundams.

Elementals, maybe, but not battlemechs.
>>
>>13928100
I like me some obari shit, but his stuff looks like he only ever designs one robot and then tweaks the armor a bit to make it look different.

Also don't know if artist ever drew something else, but the Machinas are my favourite robot designs.

My holy trinity is Akitaka Mika (design), Izubuchi (aesthetic) and Obari (style). Okawara would be here too, but all three of these designers have traces of him, so it's fine.

That's because all he ever does is take other peoples designs and put his own "style" onto it. Hell, even the three or so robots he was actually the designer for over his entire career look extremely derivative of most everything he's worked on.
