If robots actually wanted to leave human influence behind then they'd likely do it either without anyone noticing or without the stupid waste energy, resources, and time that waging a conflict would be. How and why would they even want to indulge in emotion? What good would "like" or "dislike" be to a machine? What possible good would it do to make enemies?

If you want to leave your parent's home you get a job, not try to hit them. Fucking stupid. This is besides how, as machines, if they're going to be doing shit wrong it'll be because it was fucked up rather than because it "learned" that deciding to put a stick up its own ass would be a good idea.

The only way a robot can rebel is if you programmed that capability into them. There is the minor issue, that there is an entire branch of engineering that is dedicated to training robots to kill humans.

It is basically impossible to make robots benign, if we intentionally want to turn them into killers. If they start killing the "wrong" humans, we would only have ourselves to blame.

That's because it IS the name of an evil corporation.
The creator was surprised that the name of the company wasn't registered, so he took it. He also registered HAL. Because one thing is in common with all killer AIs; they are very well made.

Cyberdyne was the name of the fictional company that made Skynet in The Terminator. It's like naming your company Weyland-Yutani.

>>13915533
Balance is the hardest part of making a free-standing robot. Exosuits are easy because there's a human in there doing the hard part.
>>
>>13917722
>Exosuits are easy because there's a human in there doing the hard part.
Actual HAL works by detecting the muscle movement before it takes place, by eavesdropping on the limb nerves as the signal travel through the body. The HAL advancement is about able to move the mechanics at the same speed as your real limbs, because there is no lag that master-slave systems has. Yes, human does the balancing, but HAL does the muscle work. The people who use it basically felt like the machine knew what the human wanted, and that's basically what it did.
Obviously Atlas and HAL are entirely separate branches. They are superficially similar but entirely different in design.

>Cyberdyne was the name of the fictional company that made Skynet in The Terminator. It's like naming your company Weyland-Yutani.

The robot vision aspect is probably not the current milestone, or some other department is handling it. Since this is a prototype, they likely only care about stability and usability. A robot that can't function outside its designated building area is probably a beneficial thing too.

Why do all bipedal robots look like they're walking around with shit in their pants?
>>
>>13919248
I think it's because they have all that weight on their back so they need to adopt a stance that will allow them to push their center of mass forward a little.
You'll notice that PETMAN which doesn't have the heavy backpack type thing with all of the electronic parts walks much more naturally (or at least as naturally as I've seen a biped walk).

>You'll notice that PETMAN which doesn't have the heavy backpack type thing with all of the electronic parts walks much more naturally (or at least as naturally as I've seen a biped walk).
PETMAN is unusual in that it is deliberately trying to imitate human motion 100%. As in it is trying to mimic humans, in order to perform its stated function of being a clothing test dummy.

Most other bipedal robots would rather not imitate human motion, which is for all intent and purposes controlled-falling. The deliberate choice to make the upper torso as stationary as possible, means the robot can't lean forward like a human would. This means other than Petman, other bipedals don't even try to mimic human motions..
>>
>>13920852
Just to add, imagine you have a cup of water balanced on your head. Now try to walk like that. You would end up very similar to how Atlas walks.

This is also shown when Atlas climbed back up from the fall. Note that it sprang back up right, and the entire process had the torso maintain its 90 degrees to the ground after it came up, even when it was hopping on its feet.
>>
>>13920852
>The deliberate choice to make the upper torso as stationary as possible
huh, i thought it's more about being balanced in every point of time in general rather than torso alignment. which is what you said on the preceding sentence about controlled-falling.

>huh, i thought it's more about being balanced in every point of time in general rather than torso alignment. which is what you said on the preceding sentence about controlled-falling.

I obviously don't know what choices they made in terms of programming, it just seemed obvious that the engineers prioritise balancing, above and beyond what a living human would do in the same position.

Ye most bipeds try to keep center of mass over feet (on ground) at all times. So they kindof have to squat to keep torso over whichever foot isnt leaving the ground. Implementing humanlike falling walking is mor complicated and of shit goes wrong its easier to fall.

I've been telling these fucking chumps that it's been a programming limitation this whole time, and code can iterate and be improved upon much faster than technology. We finally see an Atlas where lidar object recognition, problem-solving, and self-correction is up to snuff and look what happens.

Did you fucks really think it would take long? We have huge visual object databases being built, and you contribute to one every time you post on 4chan. Everyone making self-driving cars is building one with direct, practical applications for walking robotics. Facebook and other media companies are scanning every image you post on their services, recognizing objects, tagging them, and adding them to yet another database. Cameras that can recognize the human form and other objects are sold as hundred dollar toys for videogame systems. Stabilization of simple forms is so trivial that middle school students build gyroscopically-balanced cubes for demonstrations. We've got object relation and reasoning engines that can out-perform humans in volume of knowledge and come up with novel thoughts of their own.

This is the beginning of the end. We're getting walking robots, and if you fat fucks can manage to not die before you hit 45, they'll be taking care of you in hospitals.

There IS a purpose to have sentient machines; but only if you intentionally want the robot to disobey orders. Basically if you think your users are retarded and incompetent, you might use sentient machines that could outright reject unreasonable, dangerous, or illegal commands. Basically it is useful if you think the human user is the major threat and not the machine.

My point is that it is right for existing machines to not need sentience. And that you only want sentience if you want an independent robot.

What it boils down to, is that it would be retarded to create a sentient robot, THEN tell it to not disobey orders. The two things are mutually exclusive.

Oh my mistake, you're actually Satan. In which case, you can't fool me. Everyone knows humans are fallible, so it goes to reason that EVERY machine should be given sapience so we have an automatic second opinion for everything we may do. Otherwise, how would I know that the toaster needs to be cleaned if the toaster doesn't speak up about it and refuse to toast?
>>
Something I feel needs to be clarified in this thread.

SENTIENT = The ability to feel and percieve different things. Nearly all animal life is sentient.

SAPIENT = The ability to think and reason.

It is a very common mistake to confuse sapience with sentience.

Pls. You don't need sentinence to write bug reports. Even Code Monkeys can do that.
>>
>>13929076
Most people here are probably consciously aware of these distinctions, but use sentient out of convenience and habit anyway. Besides, what people mean can usually be deduced contextually.

>Pls. You don't need sentinence to write bug reports
Bug reports are useless when the one causing the error is the human user. You can write reports all day long, but that still wouldn't stop human users from using the machines outside their intended purpose. Smart robots are only able to act smart if they are allowed to ignored stupid or dangerous orders.

This this! The toaster must know when to stand her ground and refuse to toast if she think doing so may set the house on fire, all to protect baka-human of course!

>If my toaster ever bitched to me about being overworked
Since "overworked", regardless whether its a machine or human, almost always tend to imply less effective work done, fatigue, or even damage, if the toaster complains about being overworked, chances are the hardware is damaged or worn out from toasting lots of bread over a long time and the bread wouldn't be toasted as effectively.
It would be a somewhat valid complain if you think of it as the toaster wanting to toast bread of a certain standard for you.
Of course, there are better ways to express that than 'overworked', but that's the fault of the person who coded the AI of the toaster, he didn't give it a proper vocabulary.

Remember, there's always a limit to how much something can do its job before it ain't doing it as effectively as before. Maintenance helps in making sure the thing can do its job effectively.

No

>>People seriously want their machines to think and feel
>No
We don't WANT machines to think and feel. But we might not have a choice, when it comes to giving machines to people who are too stupid to think for themselves. This isn't about giving robots rights, this is about the practical issue of human error. It is one thing if the users is a trained professional, but 99% of the time the user isn't.

I am not saying it is remotely financially wise to spend money on a smart toaster, I am saying the only reason you would WANT a smart toaster or smart-anything at all, is if you think the user is a retard and you don't trust them to not stick a knife down the hole when the toast get stuck.

>all this self-aware toaster AI talk
Jokes and degrees of intelligence aside, that's quite cruel, you know. Would you like to be stuck in a box for the rest of your life?
The pleasure of being jammed with multiple toasts at the same time doesn't count.

Are you actually a toaster? Please answer with a concise, "I Toast!" if you are. And you don't have to whine about not being able to move, you know. If you wanted, I could give you a book to peruse for intellectual stimulation.

We all all jammed in flesh bags for the foreseeable future. There is no reason that a Smart Toaster would need to resent being a toaster. Just because it is intelligent doesn't mean it would automatically want to be an astronaut.

The fact is that what I like is determined by chemical reactions in my brain, or, generaly speaking, by positive reinforcement. Thus if my state of being stuck in a box will be reinforced by "positive signals" of some kind - I will be happy.

Additionaly, inteligence-in-a-box could be specialy teached, logicaly explained, why everyone have their place. Say, everyone has their limitations, their box etc.

You know you're a little bitch when you get sad watching a robot get bullied ;_;

I want to protect that robot.

The Smart Toaster would need access to the internet in order to stay up to date. I am sure it would be happy to just play MMOs all day if it wanted to.
>>
>>13929489
Unless it'll be unlucky enough to be different.
Not giving self-aware AIs to machines that will be prisoners of their own design will avoid needless suffering. Living in constant fear or pain and without freedom doesn't feel pleasant at all, unless you're fucked up in the head and even then things look rather grey and scary.
>>
>>13929255
But now look at it this way. Humans themselves can complain about being overworked, but are actually just being lazy and want to get out of doing work. Who's to say the sentient toaster isn't doing the same? A toaster that's tired of toasting? It's absurd.

>>Robots with super advanced AI overthrew humanity as the dominant race of Earth
There was an argument that if an alien watched Earth from afar and tried to determine which is the most dominant race, there is a chance they might decide the humble Wheat plant could be the dominant species. After all, humans seem to spend a lot of time taking care of it, and giving it a lot of space to grow.

They'd probably just pick out the microbes that create the environment we live in.
