***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

Our next Group Build!

Field Repair

Basically what this means is that rather than the mobile suit being fresh out of a factory, it's quite the opposite. Whether it's trudging through dense jungles or dodging debris in asteroid belts, your mobile suit has seen some better days.
You've been out in the field for quite a long time now, nearly half a year of active duty in the front lines and your personal mobile suit's pretty banged up. What's worse is the fact that there isn't a maintenance bay within several thousand kilometers of your local area that's capable of making any major repairs. Your unit's engineering crew has resorted to patch work and jury-rigging to keep your machine operational. Stray fire might have crippled its legs and arms or otherwise dealt considerable damage to a mobile suit's systems meanwhile some units have simply lost bits of armor and panels to the elements and have been forced to patch weld metal sheets over the exposed inner workings.
In any case it's beaten to hell but somehow you and your team have somehow kept it chugging along and now command's ordered all units operating in your theatre to fall back to form a defensive line against the enemy offensive.

So are sanding sticks and sandpaper in general supposed to only last like ten seconds before they turn white and become unusable, or am I doing something wrong?
>>
>>13673466

Yes.

Paint also helps if you are planning to paint it.
Simply do a tad more over the area that got damaged, and then do the other coats over that.
>>
>>13673496
Are you wetting your sandpaper down?

If you wet sandpaper or sanding sticks that aren't made for wet sanding, you'll lose all of the abrasive material.
>>
>>13673508
I'm not.

They just seem to lose all of the abrasion extremely quickly whenever I sand.

i guess i'll blog on /m/ too

decided to go with flat aluminum for the wing binders of the zeta plus, I haven't got it here but I already masked the blue parts on and I'm going to do the white tomorrow morning. I'm also planning on making the pink a tint darker (sources on the net say to use red paint as opposed to black or grey to darken pink so i'll experiment a little)

Project is coming along nicely, once I get the pink to the right tint it'll really start to come along as that is 90% of the armour parts

>>
>>13673993

in addition wet sanding can be nice if you aren't wearing a mask because you get far less dust into your lungs

it also can get really fine finishes when you get into 2500+ grit range, but can sometimes be harder to see where your marks are at lower grit levels
>>
>>13673999
Got it.

Any amazing sanding techniques I should know about, wise masters?

So far I've been going with "rub it a lot" and "use the appropriate grit and don't go too rough and ruin your model like a retard".
>>
>>13674003

experiment with how hard you are pressing, and how fast you are moving the paper

people also have different preferences on moving in random directions to get the whole surface even or only one direction,

If you need to sand a flat surface and are using paper, get a popsicle stick or something similar and glue the paper to it, otherwise you will round off the corners.

My favorite sanding and body work tools are
>squadron sanding sticks, coarse, medium, and tri grit for finishing
>micromesh pads
>jewelers files

I also have some weird locally made strips that are very thin, and some cone shaped ones

this is just the stuff I have found I like after lots of testing, and it's really focused on heavy work like this old zaku kit
>>
>>13674003
Sandpaper glued to popsicle sticks is great for sanding flat parts and much cheaper than buying premade ones
>>

its not a brick at all, the extra parts only hinder the poseability slightly in a few areas but it is still perfectly flexible. the hardest part is just working around all the guns and fins sticking out in different directions and getting it to pose correctly with the mega beam rifle mounted at a weird angle.

I have sort of a general question about Gunpla. I built my first one yesterday and I really enjoyed it. It wasn't particularly hard and since the guide says that there isn't a difficulty difference between HG and MG should I bother with HG anymore? MG just seems all around bigger and cooler. 1. Use nipper cut off far from the actual piece
2. What should look like after
3. Use nipple cut off half of nub
4. What should look like after
5. Use fingers or desk to stablize your hands. Slice off nub going upwards like a mountain.

5a. *optional: or use sandpaper to take off the nub. There are different grits, 1000 then 2000 should be good. DONE.*

6+7. What should look like after step 5. Do the same as step 5 on the opposite side till the mountain nub is flat.
8. Use finger nail to press on any stress marks to help make it disappear. (won't fully disappear if done wrong or did not use any sandpaper)
9+10. End result

11. Pic if you have mircoscope eyes. Otherwise it's barely noticable.

Good luck ! Please feel free to ignore my guide if you don't like it.

The MGs I looked at don't seem that expensive. Maybe it's just because other models I have built were 40k stuff which was the price of an MG for a tiny little tank. I get what you're saying about HG though.

theres also the 1/100 HG. ill never complain about the HGs poseability compared to that thing, the shoulders have zero movement because the cannons sit on top of them, elbows only move about 40 degrees and the knees cant hold its weight at all with the AB stuff on there. plus all the partsformers components make it impossible to stay together and will crumble if you look at it funny.

Got a really nice kit for christmas and I don't want to just snap it and do panel lining on it, I'd like to make the colors look a little nicer. I've only painted model cars before, so I'm probably going to test painting a cheaper kit first.

Reading the guide for topcoating, will the colors of the base plastic look better by just topcoating them (no paint), or should I really think about practicing on the cheaper kit with a primer->paint->topcoat
>>
>>13675427
Usually, I put on music from the series that kit belongs to. Lets me remember seeing it on screen or looking at it through manga pages.

As for non-Gundam songs, usually Armored Core OSTs or whatever stations I have on Pandora.

If you're a snap-builder then you can use them to cover over nub marks that are left even after sanding, and they're a simple way to panel line as well. I prefer to use enamels to panel line since I think it takes less time
>>
So when you guys paint parts, do you bother fully painting the whole thing? Like would you use paint on the parts that never see the light of day?
>>
>>13676201

The more you paint where you can't see, the more fitment problems you have to correct later. It's really a case by case basis though, you definitely want to make sure you'll never run into a situation where you pose the kit and suddenly see primer or plastic though.
>>
>>13676215
I ran into this problem a lot when I was painting the MG Unicorn where pieces that seem like they'd never be visible wind up being very prominent or noticeable. I just get annoyed whenever pieces have very deep recesses or when I have to move the clamp onto different areas to get another part of it painted.
>>
>>13676234

generally if a part needs to have the clip moved, it means another type of attachment to a stick like sticky tack or masking tape would be more ideal

Hey sorry for the late reply anon! Yeah it's the same one you described, but I don't really use the light on the knife. It doesn't help much when I have a lamp instead. I usually just buy standard replacement blades, I don't get too crazy with the ones that come with the knife holder. Good eye!

So someone tell me, is the GM Striker a good kit? It's one of my favorite GM variants so I'm going to buy it regardless, but I'd like to know what I'm getting into.

For HG kits, do you guys separate the front skit or just leave it be?
>>
>>13677763

Depends on the kit I suppose and how the front skirt connects. I did it to my Revive Gundam and it was preddy gud.

Its always better to just snip it in the middle without removing any excess, as it helps the friction of the independent skirts.
