Gunpla / Plamo General

Merry Christmas Time!

***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

Our next Group Build!

Field Repair

Basically what this means is that rather than the mobile suit being fresh out of a factory, it's quite the opposite. Whether it's trudging through dense jungles or dodging debris in asteroid belts, your mobile suit has seen some better days.
You've been out in the field for quite a long time now, nearly half a year of active duty in the front lines and your personal mobile suit's pretty banged up. What's worse is the fact that there isn't a maintenance bay within several thousand kilometers of your local area that's capable of making any major repairs. Your unit's engineering crew has resorted to patch work and jury-rigging to keep your machine operational. Stray fire might have crippled its legs and arms or otherwise dealt considerable damage to a mobile suit's systems meanwhile some units have simply lost bits of armor and panels to the elements and have been forced to patch weld metal sheets over the exposed inner workings.
In any case it's beaten to hell but somehow you and your team have somehow kept it chugging along and now command's ordered all units operating in your theatre to fall back to form a defensive line against the enemy offensive.

Victory Gundams dont have waists, period. its just not part of their design. the transformation eliminates the waist joint entirely, on the V2 even more than the Victory. the HGs got away it it since they dont transform.

The V2 is still smaller than the RX-78-2 MG kits, so that's still consistent. Now whether or not it's smaller than the MG F91/Crossbone is another thing
>>
>>13666299
You know that 11th novel volume coming soon?
>>
>>13666407
Uh, this isn't new. The HGUC Victory is a bit taller than it should be too.
>>
>>13666407
Well that depends. Anyone have measurements? The one that would actually be 1/100 would be the one that is 15.5cm tall head height and 17.5cm tall including the backpack V nozzle.
>>
>>13666458
>>13666443
I know that late UC suits aren't usually to scale due to their complexity, but the one on the left was a 1/100 as well. Then again, it could be that the 1/100 HG was scaled properly due to the reduced complexity; if not, this is a pretty big jump from an already off-scale model.

Should I focus only on buying the brand new kits (2015 and upcoming) or are older kits fine too?
>>
>>13666629
Depends on the kit. Some new kits are shit, some old kits are great.

Generally speaking, more recent HGUCs are better than old ones just because tech advances, but they also sometimes oversimplify and make something with awful articulation, or wonky proportions.
>>
>>13666629
My experience is that anything from ~2012 or so is usually going to be decent. If you only stick with current kits, you're going to lose out on a few really good ones simply because Bandai doesn't do revisions all that often.
>>
>>13665932
I have both, I replied to your post in the previous thread before I scrolled down and realized that the new thread had been made. They are both cool kits and fun builds imo but the thing is that the Delta Gundam Unit 2 is literally just a regular Delta Gundam just with different colors and special decals while the Rebawoo has parts on it that aren't on the regular Bawoo, and these parts have to be glued on. The rebawoo is not for a snapfag, because it takes more than a OOB straight build to make it look good.
>>
>>13665853
Shit this looks awesome, any info of price or releasedate?

>>
>>13666674

it's not a "custom," it's a preview of DM's upcoming release of a PG unicorn kit. Dragon Momoko is a 3rd party manufacturer.

It's nice to have new people here but stop answering questions you don't 100% know the answer to.

>>13666407
Yeah, the V2 is way taller than it should be, it towers over the normal Victory. It looks as tall as one of the Wing Gundams.
>>
>>13666717

I know it's inaccurate and would look wrong next to late UC kits many own, but I am ok with this new height going forward for the sake of consistency among all kits
>>
>>13666461
The older 1/100 is actually a little too short - mine stands 14.6 cm to the top of the head.
>>
>>13666702
So, a custom.
>>
>>13666702
DM model their shit off people's custom, same with the Strike, Akatsuki, and their Destiny was a MB. So yes by design it is a"custom".
>>
>>13666771
By design it can be construed to be a custom since it's not official but distribution wise it is not and will be made available to abyone who can buy it.
>>
>>13666788
I guess it depends how we split the hairs on what 'custom' denotes.

Like, if you cobble some parts together and make a thing, versus the moment you make your own molds to mass produce that thing?

the HGs were also taller than the old models, its a recurring thing with the newer Victory kits. its probobly just Katoki taking some artistic leway with his models, the small MS thing was Tomino's idea and Katoki never seemed to be a big fan of that.

it's crazy how different the old kits look, especially during construction. I'm hoping to finish this kit next now that the colony is done.

No. They wanted smaller suits so they COULD have smaller kits. They made the kits and after they did so they realized there were no savings in production, threw their hands into the air, and just kind of stuck with it.

Should I be using regular plastic cement or the extra thin version for seam wielding?
>>
>>13668907

really depends on the part, if it's something large like 2 halves of a leg or foot the thicker can be better, but you really need to let it dry

if it's a small part the thin can be better because it is a lot more manageable but also can evaporate quickly

There's nothing wrong with snapbuilds.

>>13669455
Here's the deal. If it's your first ten kits, then fine, leave the nub marks, stress marks, etc.

Past 10, you should be competent enough to handle a knife or sandpaper to clean those out.

past 20 kits, you should at least be detailing, doing minor seam welds, etc.

Of course there will always be times where you just cant be fucked 100%, but you have to improve along the way. You dont have to completely get into scratch building or resins if you dont feel confident enough though.

The sad thing is, a lot of people here go on both extreme sides of the spectrum - the forever snapfags who never improves and the faggots who's done one painted build and thinks they're shit hot.

It's not a toy. Its a model kit. If you want a toy, get a robot damaishii or MSIA. Part of this hobby is at the very least doing the basics to remove and sand down nubs properly. If you can't even do that and consider these "toys" then get out, nobody wants you here. Go back to your reddit or tumblr or god forbid facebook hugbox.
Gunpla holds importance for most everyone here, outside of snapfaggot. If you can't understand why we take our model building seriously, then I'll say it again, leave.
>>
>>13669441
Here's the thing, you're in a gunpla general, for people who love it as a hobby and enjoy putting effort in it. And then someone go in there and say he doesn't like putting effort in it, of course people are going to get upset. That's like posting on /a/ when you barely watch more than the most popular anime.
Learn to respect people's effort by putting in effort on your own.
Or you can just continue to snapfag but just don't show that off in this kind of threads.

you immediately assume I'm a snapfag (Which I'm not, in fact I don't even build gunpla) and both you and >>13669547 are missing the point. I'm not going to sit here and waste my breath past this post because obviously no matter what I say people are going to have their opinions and you know what? That's okay. Because that is what is at the heart of my opinion.

We are all anonymous individuals from all over the world, none of us own /m/, and an individual is free to explore his or her hobby in any way because guess what? They get to decide what they want to do with their gunpla because it is exactly that, theirs. Do you think he is the only gunpla noob (assuming he is a noob) on this forum? Not by a long shot, and I'm almost certain that at some point you were not that great yourself at building your models. Should you have been excluded, just because your skills weren't up to par? No, because that's the great thing about this place. It's open to all, and no one person has any more say then the next.

In the end, there is a place for people who are not good at assembling gunpla in this thread just as there is a place for gunpla aces. If you have that much of a problem with it then ignore it, because no one has to go anywhere for you just because you are bothered by pictures of badly built toys on the internet, and no one deserves to be berated for something they enjoy doing. (Especially when it is the same fucking hobby) Learn to give tips and encourage better work, instead of putting people down and shaming them out of a hobby you should be stoked about having people to share with.

That's also how I can tell you are a manchild. You've clearly never mentored anyone in your life.

Have a good night /m/. Hopefully at least one person will take away some positive feelings from what I've layed out.
>>
>>13669397
>Grow up.

Says the guy in a thread about building tiny plastic robots.

>And let people build things they pay for however the fuck they like

Yes people can spend their money and build a kit however they want, I agree 100%. But coming here and posting photos of it and thinking they will get replies like "awesome dude!" or "looks rad!" or just a personal hugbox in general is foolish; especially when there are people that frequent this thread (or at least used to, it's not that many anymore unfortunately) that actually put effort into their work and make something worth sharing that fellow builders want to see. So whether you're the OP of those pics, some SJW with too much free time, or transformers:snap-shit-kun in disguise, I hope you now understand the reason for the negative responses that you have been so valiantly replying to.

Lol nice hypocrisy man.
Also, there's plenty of us that give tips and criticism to people that are actually trying to improve. You and snapfaggot aren't trying to improve. You consider this a "manchild" hobby after all, these are only toys according to you. When you can't even read the guide, you might as well not post here at all. This place is for people that actually care about the hobby, not shitposters and retards that refuse to learn in the first place. There are no positive feelings in your post for anyone but the most braindead of individuals that believe they should constantly and consistently harass us with their poorly-built garbage and then refuse to even do the most basic of basics required for this hobby. You're like that person that goes to a fighting game tournament with no experience, loses the first round, calls your opponent cheap and lame, and then goes on a rant about how people playing that tournament should let noobs win so everyone feels good. Fuck off, this isn't kindergarten. Not everyone gets a trophy, and when those of us that care about the hobby see something covered in nubs we're gonna call you out on it. I hope you and snapfaggot die in your sleep.

Did YOU ever mentored anyone in your life? Ever taught someone something and then they just ignore it because they're just doing this for fun?

Okay, I can't handle this. I'm the guy that posted the "snapfigs". Look, I didn't expect everyone to get so mad, or cause so many arguments. I just wanted to share and discuss gundam. I know that these are shoddily assembled, but the thing is, I'm worried about ruining the figures.

Like, I get fucking shaky whenever I put the stickers on, and that's something I can't help. I couldnmt imagine trying to buffer these things out, and end up scratching up the figure. It'd be ruined forever because of my nervousness. And on the topic of "being lazy", yeah, I am, i'm nit going to hide it. But I don't share my photos to get critique, I knew I was gonna get flak in the first place. Plus, these guys look cool, and have great articulation, which I'm a sucker for pulling off nice poses.

I share them to show that I'm having fun with them as much as you guys do. Maybe even see someone's elses models and see how cool THEIRS is, with all the streamlining and nice painting. I don't want another argument to start, I just wanted to explain myself, because I obviously caused a lot of harm. Merry Christmas (kinda...)

I'm so mad, I live in Arizona, USA where it's supposed to be mid 70's in the Winter. But apparently the year I decide I want to paint and coat my shit is the year we get some of the coldest temperatures in state history.

What's the kit next to Transient? Frame arms?

Thanks for being nice but I know I could have done some more panel lining and removed some nubs a little better.

But that's the point isn't it? If you're not making a conscious effort to improve in any aspect in life then you're just regressing.

I mean, if you're not attempting to make something close to the instruction manual then what's the point? Why even bother putting on the stickers at all if you don't want to make it look better with some effort?

Yep, Revenant Eye to be exact. The frosting from the topcoat was totally intentional and wasn't a result of me using krylon for it

I dunno, I guess the lighting and everything in the picture make it look just really clean and nice.

You can use a toothpick to dampen stickers BUT the way the stickers for the eyes work is the long ones are horizontal and short ones are vertical. It's hard to get right, don't worry about it. Look at mine.

All that is 27 dollars with Amazon Prime, less than the cost of a kit. All that plus maybe an hour or two worth of effort would make your kit look better.
