Effectiveness varies. What I got done at a clinic has stayed mostly gone. After about six years I bought a tria to try out doing touchups at home. It's not bad for getting the small amounts that have grown back. It's a little bad for clearing large patches of stuff that I never got treated. Like using it on my underarms is tedious and there's still hair after 7 treatments, but there's definitely less and no significant shadow after I shave.
