I'll probably end up getting an moa pst. I got the primary arms just to toy with the idea of a 1-4. I was able to stay on a torso at 400 easily with hold overs but I'd like the precision the PST reticle offers
>>
>>30365109
word, i'm coming from an eotech so precision not a big deal with the tiny moa dot. the problem for me is reliability and no zoom. i regularly shoot past 300 with my rifle so i needs that 4x

the alternative is getting a magnifier for the eotech and that just seems like a huge waste of money considering the reliability issues

I have a 20" GI upper. I am looking for alternative handguards. I know about the KAC M5 RAS and the Midwest Industries rails that are 12.625" for uppers like mine. Any others like that?

if you are going to get a kac rail get a 3.1 or 3

>>30366091
I want a modular system. I'm looking for rails that will work with a rifle length gas system and a FSP, so I think that means 12.625" rails. I know KAC is expensive, but they do seconds on M5 rails and you can find them cheat on ar15.com's EE.

Basically, I have A2 handguards on it. I would like to "upgrade."

Most of the major brands have a drop in solution. It comes down to how much you are willing to spend.

For just having a quad rail to mount stuff on there is no functional difference from a $19 Monstrum Tactical rail and a $200 Daniel Defense Omega.
>>
>>30367636
No, not even comparible in terms of quality of manufacture to the point that some low end rails sheer when you try and mount things to them.

I await your evidence of rails sheering with bated breath.

I own expensive rails and rifles, so trust me, I get the "quality" standpoint. However, the average AR15 owner will see no benefit in buying a name brand over an off brand and telling them name brand is the only way to go does them a huge disservice when that money can be spent going out and shooting their new rifle and enjoying it.

Because they do, I've bought the cheapo rails and decent name-brand rails, and there is a difference.

If you don't mind your handguard flopping around and clattering like an old ww1 1911, then go for it. Just know what you're getting into for the price of admission.
>>
>>30367772
Sheering is an exaggeration, the finish might be of lower quality and come off, and who's to say a low quality company wouldn't weaken the strength of they're rails to make a few more shekels.

Thats something DD, KAC, Noveske, MI, or even UTG wouldn't do.

Once again "For just having a quad rail to mount stuff on there is no functional difference"

I stand by that statement. I am not going to discount improvements in machining, finish quality, or fitment as prices go up since they are indeed there in many cases.

However, I see no need to pigeon hole people asking questions into the name brands for parts like a drop-in quad rail which is simply a provision for control accessories or lights.
>>
Can't decide between going with the MBUS Pro front sight or the fixed DD one to pair with a KAC rear sight. Any suggestions?

>>30367913
Sure, but the likelyhood of something happening with the cheaper rail that would effect its ability to facilitate the use of lights/control accessories is exponentially higher than a quality brand that all of us have tried out personally and recommend.

Not all AR owners have them just as range toys, and I'd rather recommend something of higher quality under the assumtion that a rifle might be used in a life or death situation.
>>
I bought some cheap mags from PSA, is it okay to leave them loaded all the time?
>>
>>30368018
Yes, springs weaken due to contraction and retraction, but not staying compressed.
>>
>>30367921
mbus pro front and kac rear is a great combo. I enjoy it a lot, I'm not a fan of fixed irons unless it's an a2 fsb but that's subjective.
>>
There was a tripfag on here a few days ago who wanted to buy my DD RIS II FDE.

Bro, I've got some bad news for you. The mongoloid who installed my BCM gas block decided it would be a good idea to use an adhesive with a melting point of 1300 degrees celsius to attach it to the barrel. As a result, I can separate the rail from the barrel nut and remove it, but I cannot get the barrel nut and DD bolt up nut off. I think I have to take a blowtorch to the gas block, which I would rather not do. Unless you have a better idea for getting the damn thing off I'm thinking I can just give you the entire upper minus the BCG and charging handle for something of equal value. It's a 14.5 in barrel though, so I don't know what the laws are for the US.

.223 Wylde is a hybrid chamber between 5.56 NATO and .223rem commercial. It's a compromise between the more pressure-permissive military chamber, and the more accuracy-potential commercial chamber. The idea is to allow safe usage of 5.56 NATO pressure ammo, even on full-auto, while gaining back some of the accuracy and brass life of the commercial .223rem chamber.

IIRC, it maintains the longer throat of the 5.56 chamber while having a tighter leade and less generous shoulder spacing.

All yesterday's talk about projectile efficiency and ratios and whatnot got me interested.

Does anyone have a good source to learn more about .223 ballistics or just ballistics in general?

Not terminal, but just flight characteristics of different projectiles.
>>
>>30368395
Ebay has really pulled through for me on machine tools lately.

Got a metric 24x1.5mm tap (AK-74 threads) with through-tool coolant and carbide cutting edges (it's cemented onto the HSS body) for $14 made in Japan, and a used Vortec cold air gun for $130 ($400+ item)
>>
>>30368608
Search for DocGKR's posts around the internet. He is at the forefront of dissemination of terminal effectiveness results to the general public from LE/Gov testing.

IIRC he is off of arfcom and m4c now for not petting the mods the right way but is still active elsewhere.
>>
Would free float hgs make a good diy fleshlight?
>>
>>30368608
"external" ballistics coveres the flight of the bullet from the barrel to the target

"internal" ballistics would probably be while bullet is still in the barrel, from acceleration to exit

terminal is for effect on targets
>>
>>30368498
Removed from the barrel? Yes
Can you post a pic of the gas block, specifically the screws you're trying to remove.

Herp, I didn't finish reading your post. As for external ballistics and bullet design a lot of the projectile manufacturers offer a lot of information that is presented well for the layman.

If you're poor like me, you might entertain the idea of getting magpul drop in handguards to make it look better and attach a light.

But then you won't be satisfied so next you'll buy a cheap free-float rail that's like 13 inches long and is heavy.

You will quickly realize you enjoy your rifle more if it's lightweight, and will want a shorter high-dollar rail, like a BCM KMR.

Just save your fucking money and time, and buy a BCM KMR free-float rail about 10 inches long, maybe less. You'll need an armorer's wrench and a Geissele reaction rod (or the magpul offering, much cheaper, works for me) to remove your barrel nut. And a torque wrench to install the new one.

If you have a friend with machinery (mill, lathe) have him make you a Geissele reaction rod. It's just a rod with a splined end you insert into the locking lugs, which are permanently attached to the barrel.

Don't try to remove the flash hider or barrel nut without holding the rifle by the locking lugs, you will fuck shit up.

If you just put it between your legs, the first thing to go will probably be your takedown pins.

All in all you should just be super happy with it the way it is, the handguard is pretty nice, easy to get a good grip on because it will bend inward a little when you death-grip it. Fixed front sight, ultra durable.

If you are unhappy with the irons, I would suggest buying a better rear sight, like a carry handle rear sight. That will give you elevation adjustment which I have come to thoroughly enjoy on my AK. It might not be absolutely necessary for military use, but on the fly rear sight elevation adjustment is pretty damn neat for range use.

Don't waste your money on a cheap chinese made rear sight either, it will be a waste of money when it falls apart on you. The cheap shitty bolts and pins they assemble it with fall out, then it falls apart.

However, keep in mind some bullet companies are widely considered to be "generous" with their estimations of their own bullets. With Nosler and Berger being two of the most egregious offenders, and Hornady and Sierra lying the least.

6mmbr.com actually has good write-ups about just about every facet of ballistics, from a target shooter's standpoint, including a good breakdown of when you should stop using flat-based bullets.
>>
>>30368805
Leupold has several, the (VX?)-Hog, VX-R Patrol, VX-3, VX-XIII, VX-XII, and probably others.

Vortex also has the Viper PST 1-4x, and Burris has a good one as well. Millett also has a decent one but it's heavier than the rest while not really being cheaper, and last but not least Primary Arms' 1-4x ACSS is decent while being affordable.

As far as the whole 1.25-4x, all low-power variables fail at being true 1x. Leupold is just more upfront about it.

What? I took it from the exact same spot. All I did was tilt the rifle over so I wasn't looking through the optic.
>>
>>30369452
Depends on the scope. It will always be faster, but a good, compact low-power variable will be close enough that it really doesn't matter that much.

IMO it's personal preference. I like low-power variables because I do just as much 200m+ shooting as I do 25m hosing, and a low-power variable is good for the former and works for the latter.
>>
>>30369449
And people don't outbid themselves 5 times in a row 5 days before it ends
