I've been shooting rail guns since Quake 2, in one form or another; have we advanced enough to have something equivalent in real life weaponry - a magnetic field (or some other solution) that accelerates a projectile to unprecedented velocities and penetration power, regardless of loading times or firing rate (preferably leaving a fancy, instantaneous trail behind)?
If not, why haven't we advanced the more futuristic weapons by now, like the ones that shoot plasma balls or long-distance lasers and such?
Sure, we have super-powerful conventional weapons that propel metal bullets at very high velocities, but those aren't as exciting, are they?

Because using gunpowder to shoot metal bits at other people is far more cost-effective.

Railguns require a lot of energy.
Not to mention heat management, those experimental railguns get their barrels ruined after a couple shots.
At that point, its just easier to lob missiles and shells at whatever you want to target.

QTDDTOT? QTDDTOT. Say a fireteam heads out from their premises on patrol, is at the beginning, mid, or towards the end of it and comes into contact. They kill all the bad gots, regroup, and all that. Do they then go and pick up any small arms and kit dropped by the bad-uns? And if you do find something can you then shoot it?
They throw them in a pile and thermite them if they have time. If they're in a hurry they might strip them and huck parts around, at a minimum take something important off a crew served. Fuck no you're not going to carry that shit back to your patrol base with the rest of the crap you have ti carry, which might include wounded and POWs. And you're certainly not going to be allowed to fire it where ever you stop because no one is going to risk you exposing your position because you have a gun fetish.
Also one really gives a fuck about small arms, I'm not going to risk sitting on a position that likely has every inch zeroed longer then I have to for two or three rifles.

Good afternoon /k/omrades,
without getting into details, i am legally barred from owning firearms by state and federal law. i am not a felon. i have never had any more trouble with the law than one speeding ticket 6 Years ago.
but nonetheless, i currently have my second amendment rights revoked. upon learning this, i immediately sold my rifles to my brother in law. while it makes me sick to be in this situation, i believe that following laws is a price we must pay for living in a civilized society. I'm working with an attorney to have this decision overturned.
so my dilemma is this. in the mean time, i feel like a sitting duck. i feel very vulnerable to home invasion. what would you guys use for home defense is you had no access to firearms? i thought of maybe getting some pepper spray, but i doubt the immediate effectiveness,and I'm sure using it inside would suck for me too.
I'm also a little bit of a prepper. currently in the process of making my bug out bag. i suppose if shit really hit thefan the laws wouldn't matter, but I'd still be behind the curve because i can't practice shooting currently.
anything i can do to protect myselfand my family without a gun?

What exactly was wrong with the Japanese Army in WWII? I mean most occupying armies can be brutal, but the IJN in historical accounts comes off sounding like an army of Jeffrey Dahmers and Ted Bundys that had been let loose on civilians and POWs alike.
