Christendom makes for lazy, uncommitted ""Christians"" who have no idea what it means to be Christian. How many Christians do you believe have read the Bible? Not much more than half, I'd imagine. Kierkegaard elaborates this well in his writings, if you're interested.

Another reason Christendom corrupts Christianity, by making it a social and political entity.

Religion is not logical. Aristotle discerns between 'fact,' and the more elusive concept of 'truth' which religion attempts to grasp at. If you're looking for somewhat logical arguments for god, I'd recommend looking into St. Thomas Aquinas, since his arguments are about as close as you're going to get.

What you are describing sounds like a product of people attending Church and associating themselves with the faith for social or familial reasons, and I wouldn't consider them Christian.
It also very much depends on what kind of Church and which denomination you sample.

What makes you say that though? That atheism is more prevalent now and less people are religious? My honest opinion is that people have always struggled with their faith and the notion of a maker/afterlife vs. nothing, the only difference is that it's now a lot more socially acceptable to question it or just not believe it. Even 40 or 50 years ago, there was a lot of societal pressure on having Christian values as they were seen as intrinsic to America. That idea is diminishing more and more with each new generation.

Yes, I agree. For instance, being born into the church, Christian values being instilled from a young age, an official state/community religion etc. It's adherence to culture or expectations rather than belief. What I mean by lazy Christians is that faith is something sought out and accumulated over time by right practice and studying the scriptures, works of saints, philosophers, nihilists and such, not something you're born into, develop due to expectations or to fit in.

Okay, so I think my mistake up until now has been lumping the terms "Christendom" and "Christianity" together. It sounds like you're talking more of the social construct of it all and the people that make up the church, because Christianity itself (or at least the teachings and directives of the Bible) really indicates that followers should really be doing all of those things. Maybe not lifetime studies, but at least actively reading the Bible or learning about the teachings of Jesus/the Apostles/etc.
