The point was they were unable to use any kind of English. Even though I can't speak German well at all, I can still understand it decently enough. I don't know. Maybe part of the reason is because most speakers of English actually speak it as a second language, so weird pronunciations and strange grammar is kind of normal, and they might not be as used to strange accents in French. Maybe they're just mean.
