At first, Praotec Čech (the Elder Czech) who was travelling with his people and his brothers Kníže Lech and Kníže Rus, they stopped for a night under a mountain Říp, he climbed there next morning and said he has seen a beautiful, fertile land to his people. They decided, they'll name the country after him. His brothers continued their journey, to found what is now Poland and Russia later.

South Land. Yuros thought there had to be a giant landmass down here to 'counter-balance' the amount of landmass up in the Northern Hemisphere.
>They. Were. Wrong!!
>Suomi
Uncertain. But following theories:
Proto-Baltic word *źemē, meaning "land".
Indo-European word *gʰm-on "man" (cf. Gothic guma, Latin homo) has been suggested, being borrowed as *ćoma.
Earlier theories suggested derivation from suomaa (fen land) or suoniemi (fen cape).
There's tons of place names in eastern Finland that no one knows what the fuck they mean, suggesting the country was named by them and the language died out.
>Finland

Okay it is named after Amerigo Vespucci, but Amerigo itself is the latin version of the medieval version of the German name Emmrich, in which the second element is ric meaning "power". The first element may be ermen "whole, universal", amal "work, labour" or heim "home".

No one knows for sure though it is widely accepted that the written account in Tacitus 'Germania' is the starting point. There was no unifying name for our tribes back then so Tacitus just referred to us as Aestii, literally the tribes East from the Germanics. The countries that surround us still use names associated with some of the tribes, like the Latvian 'Igaunia' and Finnish 'Viro'.
