The Tour Vauban
18m-high polygonal defensive tower built to a plan by Vauban on the Sillon at Camaret-sur-Mer, as part of the fortifications of the goulet de Brest.
Drafted in 1683, the tower was designed in 1689 by Vauban and construction was supervised by the military engineer Jean-Pierre Traverse from 1693 to completion in 1696

Yokohama has a lot of nice surviving western-style architecture, being one of the major hubs for foreigners in Japan back in the 19th century and onwards. The glass building you see to the left of it is also in fact a very old building, but with a modern extension on top. The base is still similarly styled as the museum pictured.

The department it's located in is pretty mountainous so it's possible but I can't be sure. They'd probably close it if it was too much, those roads are still used nowadays but come with a lot of warnings and they'll block it if need be

While I think the old ones were ugly, I also think they were much more iconic parts of the NYC skyline, not to mention marvels of their time. Something about the new one just feels kind of half-assed, as it's not really as original or groundbreaking as its predecessor(s). Nice tower though, but boring I guess? I would have liked the project much better if it came with a twin, to honor the old towers more.

They were pretty intricate in facade and engineering. Shape is one thing, but square towers were the norm in those days, just like funny shapes are the norm nowadays. It was more original in the sense of its incredible height and dimensions for its time, not to mention it wasn't one tower, but two of incredible height and dimensions. Shit like that probably shook the world to unimaginable ends. As for the new one, a glass tower has been seen before, a glass tower in that shape has been seen before, a glass tower of that height (and taller) has been seen before. Just that, really. They made it in the same height too to honour the original, but I wish they hadn't. Just feels like they were holding back, especially by not even building a second one. The future cluster around it is all fine and dandy, but it just doesn't feel like much. That's just me, though.

This one kinda had to be done, before that the cars (and it's a crowded road) had to pass through the near city of Millau and it caused endless problems, accident, noise, pollution etc in the city
