Rural Hokkaido looks very much like Northern Europe/Canada. Very different from the hilly deep green terrain you would find in the rest of Japan. Here is a google street view from Nayoro. Nobody knows of that city, I am not sure why it is your dream to go there.

Edit: could not post link due to spam filter. Just type the coordinates 44.353854, 142.513558 into google maps and drop a streetview pin to give you an idea. It reminded me of scenes in Northern Europe.

Do you know that Okinawa is the poorest per capita of the 47 Japanese prefectures?

I felt Okinawa was kind of depressing for that reason. More poverty even though there is a very nice climate.

I went to Okinawa island, as well as Ishigaki (also Okinawa prefecture).

Didn't really strike me as poor, even that small island.
The very tip of Ishigaki had better much better roads than Wallonia (southern half of Belgium).

I don't mean poor as in developing country poor, it's not that bad in Okinawa. But you can still feel it coming from the main islands.

And yes roads in Japan are generally very good, sometimes too good (because our government spends so much money on infrastructure)

I found some articles on infrastructure overspending just now:

I lived in Hakodate for three years. It's not really a "small" town (~250000 people IIRC), but it was pretty comfy.

And I wouldn't mind retiring in one of those small, almost empty islands in the south, like the Goto islands.
>>
>>52306531
I think it's because of the shape. The way that it forms valleys in the middle surrounded by high mountain tops or rough hills. Not to mention that volcanic soil allows vegetation to grow easily and lakes usually form due to the elevation in soil.
>>
>>52320791
What kind of job did you do in Hakodate? I find it hard to believe there are French people in such a city.

I met a Japanese girl here in France who was from Hakodate. We started dating, and a few years later, decided to get married, but I wanted to meet her family first. So we went there, met her family, got married there and decided to stay.

So I started working in her father's business, and giving private French classes on the side. Mostly to bored housewifes, or students who wanted to study in France.

We came back here 6 months ago.

Let me redpill you

>Giant Wood Spiders. I don’t like to think of myself as a pansy, but these spiders are omfgholyshit horrible. Don’t believe me? As a member of the golden orb family of spiders (due to the color of their silk) guys have the strongest spider web of any spider. How strong? Uh..it’s not uncommon for birds to be stuck in their webs. And then eaten. We have similar spiders in the US, smaller versions commonly called garden or banana spiders. What makes the Japanese ones worse? Well, besides being 6-8inches in size they’re considered lucky if seen in the daylight, so you don’t see people disturbing them even if their giant 2-4 foot webs are stretched over a sidewalk or path. I wonder how many Japanese children vanished before they learned to respect these giant killers. The spiders probably blame it on the Aokigahara Forest.

They're basically real life skulltulas from Zelda. They just love making their webs across bike and walking paths seemingly waiting for you to run face-first into them and have their sharp legs pierce through your eyes as they furiously gnaw at your face

Not to mention the infamous giant hornets

Sorry, forgot to say why we came back. Basically, while I was enjoying my work there, I was growing a bit frustrated. I studied History and Art History, and always wanted to work in a History related field.

A friend in France told me about a job in a museum, and they were looking for someone specialised in exactly what I'm specialised in. I told my wife and her family that I wanted to apply, and they were supportive. So I applied, and in the end got the job.
