I'm not who you're talking to but the way I understand it is that i adjectives stand alone as predicates in Japanese. Da and desu are not the same thing in this respect. Da is a predicate. desu is a politeness marker. So you need da for na adjectives and nouns because those are not predicates therefore they cannot complete a sentence on their own.
