Not to stereotype, but when I've been in Germany and Iceland for work I've had people start speaking to me in German/Icelandic because they assume I'm native to the country. They never admit it, but I think it's because I'm not dressed like a typical American tourist (work clothes) and have blond hair and blue eyes with what I've been told is a nordic/germanic bone structure.
It isn't until I blankly look at them and start speaking English they realize I'm American.

Usually wherever I go, everyone assumes I'm a local. The only exception was Finland, although if I opened conversations with "moi" or if I was wearing my friend's high school hoodie I'd get tentative answers in finnish.

It's probably the contrast between the beard hair color and skin tone that makes us seem darker with facial and body hair.
