I'm actually Asatru but I've thought about converting. The problem is that my great grandparents were Jews and, as such, I would have to go through as much of the work to convert as any other person.
One of the profs on my diss committee is a converted Jew and it took her something like 5 years to convert. Seems like a lot of work and I'm not sure if I have what it takes.

Asatru get's a bad rep because of some radicals who claim to follow it, but I've found that it has brought me some peace of mind.
My father is big into genealogy and has traced his British side of the family back to the Shakespeares fairly easily, which is convenient because loads of genealogical research has been done on that family tree. So, as it stands, in our genealogy search, my 41st great grandfather is Odin. I think that satisfies some of the radicals even.
It's a good religion for people who don't want to commit or believe too heavily in the influence of some outside power; and for people who like to drink since every holiday and ritual involves alcohol.

Well, my grandparents came to the U.S. around 1935 or so, with my grandmother who was a baby at the time. Although she was born in Germany, she lived all her life in the US.
Her parents converted to Christianity during WWII out of fear. Actually, my great grandfather ended up using his doctorate in theology from Munich to become a Lutheran minister toward the later years of his life.
As such, yes, it´s pretty hard to prove. My grandmother will only talk about her heritage when coerced, as if she´s embarrassed.

I can only make the claim through the line of William Shakespeare, whose sister (IIRC) is my great-something aunt. His family has been researched to the point of mythology by people who spend much more time than I do on family histories.
I am the only person in my family who is Asatru. I actually came to it after discovering that mythological lineage and reading up on it. I give my blot to the gods every week, which is typically a pouring out of alcohol, but I also have done blood sacrifices of my own blood (small cuts) for the service of Frejya and the Vanir more than the Æsir typically.
Most holidays are focused around the solstices, similar to other heathen/pagan faiths.

I remember hearing a theory that the Vanir and Æsir represented the two different pantheons of the native Scandinavian peoples and the invading indo Europeans combined.
