Official Myanmar-US relations began 160 years ago (1856) with a letter from King Mindon to Franklin Pierce, the 14th President of the United States.
King Mindon's modernization drive was then in full swing. Over the next 15 years he tried to reform all aspects of government, fundamentally changing the revenue system and reforming administrative structures, minted coins, sent students to Europe (and appointed them to high positions on their return), setup the first factories and expanded the oil industry (one of the first in the world), promoted exports to China (cotton primarily), laid the first telegraph lines, imported steamers and ran a steamer service, and upgraded the military using international experts and imported arms.
He tried as well as forge diplomatic ties with as many foreign governments as possible, including the United States, then on the eve of its Civil War. This was all to counter the looming British threat.
When the letter was written he had just built his new city: Mandalay.
A friendly but non-committal reply was sent by President Pierce's successor James Buchanan.
The text of the letter is below:

It is interesting to note that the letter was more intent on establishing the credibility and might of the King of Ava while the offer for diplomatic relations was more of a sideline and secondary issue. The US may have looked upon it as a royal command and hence the noncommittal response.
I believe this is because the new nation of United States was not yet a great power and more importantly, not an ally of the British Empire. The Burmese were always aware of the threat of British Aggression.
In this sense, the kingdom needed more recognition and credibility in international diplomatic arena to deter further British advance. The opinion of the British and many Europeans at that time was that Burma was a barbaric state like many African nations and therefore, needed liberalization by Europeans.
Maybe that was why King Mindon rather wanted recognition than support.
Burma was entirely colonised by the British in 1885, after three expensive wars.
