I've got the suspicion that it's the whole perspective of her in correlation with the setting, or is it the arm only?

>>2510209
your perspective is missing, it's flat and that makes it look whack because it's a dynamic scene without dynamics.

The pose and block-in is alright, but the composition it self is kinda boring. It's very "dead-on" and there's very little drama, perspective and dynamic angling, which would be fitting for a jungle scene like this. Flipping it upside down is a great way to also see mistakes when in faces when it has progressed into the rendering phase, even if you've blocked in in just right adding details like lashes can really kill it and imbalance it when you squint or zoom out.

I am gonna apologize for my english right now because it's obviously not my main language. So teacher in our class gave us one task. We should choose our idol or someone who is inspiring to us. It has to have at least 20 sentences and there are some other things that you have to do but I don't remember them. Since I have no real idol I chose Friedrich Nietzsche because I like his literature. I decided to not do the main task and instead do something different. I had an idea of depicting his philosophy and do something minimalist. First thing which came to my mind was just writing his name on top of a paper and give that to the teacher but I am little afraid that the teacher will not get it. So I am looking for a way how to depict nothing and let her see that it took me some time and it wasn't from my laziness.

>>
>>2512504
Stick to black and white for now. Practice breaking down the face into simpler shapes of value (example, the two major shapes of value in her upper lip, or the large shapes of shadow under her eyebrows). Right now everything is a little too sketchy and you're trying to get finished results from the start, which is why the values are not coming out. Still, decent rendering on the more finished eye, but you're too early in the work to be trying to refine any parts.

haha i can see the golden mean spiral composition in that nice, i'd suggest using a softer brush for the far distant parts of teh pic and then use harder textured brushes for midway on the steps and then back to softer brush for the closer steps. The idea of this is to create a focal point.

A good example of focal adjustment would be 'bokeh effect' being that mostly in portrait and up close subject matter the bg defocuses while the focal point sharpens.

The person who replied you wasn't me, and to be honest I don't agree with his/her approach at all.

This is going to be a long post, and I'm sorry if it gets too long.
I have a different "plan of attack" depending on what I'm going to paint, and how fast I would like to paint it and what I'm searching to express about my subject. But I know that doesn't help, so, to give a few pointers.
I usually start placing the values with an underpainting, generally burnt sienna, but it can be another color depending on the general hue of what I'm painting, if it's a really warm painting I choose a cooler color for the underpainting so things get balanced. I almost never really draw or "construct" with a pencil, I place everything with the brush itself, using guidelines for the center of the face and eyes/nose/mouth only, trying to respect the individuality (or what attracts me about it) of my subject the most I can, avoiding formulas or searching too much for patterns. I usually mix 3 key colors that will be dominant in the painting, for example, for that one, I mixed a warm pink, a cool gray and an orange, and I mix them between each other mostly (so it keeps being coherent and clean) or with other colors, lighten or darken it as the necessity for that happens. I use very little turpentine (mixed with linseed oil).
Also, something that is constantly overlooked is the quality of the surface you are painting on. Most people buy canvases and paint directly on them, and they are mostly very rough by default. I personally find it very stressing and difficult to work the paint in rough surfaces, because I like my paint to go very smooth and easy. So I primer my canvases with 3 layers of acrylic gesso and then sand it, you still have texture but it's much better. You can also gesso paper and cardboard and paint with oils on that. That particular one was painted on cardboard.

(Still me)

But still, you will see people who start the painting with a very detailed pencil drawing and the painting looks great, you will see people who paint bit by bit with what already is supposed to be the finished thing and it looks great, to be really honest, the right way to paint is the way that you feel comfortable with and that works for you. I personally like to place the colors altogether to have a general idea of the painting so I can work on more as it goes.
I use a restricted pallete, which I plan on expanding, but I want to be the most confident I can with the colors I'm using right now, which are:
Burnt Sienna, Cadmium red, Magenta, Lemon Yellow, Naples Yellow, Ultramarine Blue, Ftalo Blue, Payne's Gray and Titanium White.
Learn about Color Bias so your color mixing gets effective if you still didn't. I hope I helped you.

Where do you work to get so much drawing done? I'm geussing your in a manufacturing or engineering based job, possibly either running CNC's or some type of plastic moulding as far as I've seen on the documents you draw on.

This comes across as slightly creepy, like a doll or something. When people do genuine smiles there will be creases or dimples near the corners of the mouth, the nose gets a bit wider, and the eyes naturally squint slightly, perhaps even getting some wrinkles in the corners of the eyes.

The catchlight in the eyes can maybe be a bit crisper and the pupils much more black.

Is the hair supposed to be partially white, or is it a rimlight? Right now it reads as white hair patches.

First of all, all the leaves are brown; second the sky is grey.
But anyway, this is pretty bad, man. It's a clear beginner drawing, I am surprised you didn't add a few birds that are just "V"s on the horizon. Go study the basics, practice shapes and forms, perspective, then values, color theory. Of course, study anatomy, figures and gestures, because I know you want to draw people as well, you just don't know how. Start posting your stuff on the beginner thread and good luck.

Heya /ic/, i'd like a general critique of what i've sketched out here.

It's comic art, and thus i'd like to keep it simple and not add much more shades to the flat colors presented. However, I'd love an opinion on the composition.

For the bg, I was going for a german expressionist inspired, warped, abstracted perspective. Thing is, i'm pretty new and terrible to perspective/bgs in general, so any insight on what i can do to improve it would be appreciated.

Dude's neck is caving in from the front. The neck is mostly a cylinder with a set volume - it shouldn't be pinching forward in the front. Use the back line of the neck to get a general idea of where the line of the front of the neck would go.

Something about the shoulder and chest region on him looks very flat. Can't pinpoint the cause, but I think it's mostly something off with the shoulder.

Could someone help me with Samus's pose? It doesn't feel natural and a bit riggid. I'm trying to get the "oh shit" just arrived at the scene pose. Could someone redline for me? It doesn't have to be 100% accurate since metroid fusion art is kind of stylised.
>>
>>2514107
Is that Samus and SA-X? Pretty cool piece if so. I feel like I would change quite a bit compositionally to help convey what you described, I'm not sure that's what you're looking for though.

>>2514115
Yeah that's the idea. SA-X is arriving at the scene a bit earlier though. Just so theres more story to the image. The composition is a bit bland at the moment, but i'll rework the enviroment and lighting to get the visual hierarchy right. Which is Samus > SA-X > Exoskeleton > Some drooling goop from the ceiling, hinting at the presence of the metroid.

I'm struggling with the pose though as mentioned before.
>>
>>2514137
Nice. Well I would pull one half of Samus's body way back like she just took a huge step back with one foot. Whichever arm is still forward I'd bring it up a bit more, maybe have it crossing her chest or face a bit. I could sketch something for example but I just sat down to start eating so I wouldn't be able to do it until I'm done but maybe that's something helpful for now at least.

The thing is your stuff takes time to critique, it's too bothersome for most people. Your brushes look nice, and you know how to use the colors and effects to make your drawings look decent, but it still sucks, and it's hard to explain why it sucks.

The most clear mistake is your wonky anatomy and the stiff poses. It's clear to me that you don't sketch these characters and you just wing it, because it looks like it.
It looks like you have a pose in mind, you try to do it, but halfway through the drawing you realize anatomy, and then you try to keep the figure anatomically correct. So you end up with a passable muh style anatomy, (guy with no torso in the first drawing, gorilla arms that stretches to the knee protagonist in the second), and at the same time stiff boring poses (guy in the first image, or that one guy in the second one).

You also distributes line weight randomly for no reason other than maybe you think it looks cool.

Start putting some thought into your drawings and you're good you lazy fuck.

It might just be me, but my eyes are drawn to the computers, most likely because of the mass of neon green and yellow colors surrounding it. If this was intended, gg, you did gud, but if not, you might want darken the colors fo those somewhat, because it's hard for me to look around the room.
>>
>>2514871
Thanks anon. I do want there to be some attention on the computer but yeah as well I'd like the eyes to go around the room so I'll up the contrast in other places maybe?
But I guess my biggest concern is.... are these colors just ugly to look at?
>>
>>2514866
Keep in mind your contrasts. One thing I've learned is getting a good composition involves playing on contrasts of value, warmth, or saturation. You don't need to do contrasts of each (in fact you wanna keep 1-2 fairly flat to enhance the others) but picking one is the key to getting good lighting, and thus good color.

Here, all of your contrasts are really disorderly. The picture is primarily warm, but there's a few very noticeable cool elements (all your blues and greens), which stand out even more due to their high saturation. The picture is also primarily low-saturation, but a few items of clutter spread all over the place are highly saturated. Though nothing's been lit yet, the base value of all your objects also creates very unfocused value contrasts, with darker values at the back, but a few dark elements at the front too.

The good news is although I'm saying all this, I don't think this picture is completely fucked. Coming up with confusing, intense and spread out contrasts is actually a good way to represent a messy room. However, I'd pick a contrast to "tie" all of them, basically an orderly contrast to create some reference points and so the eye has a place to rest in your composition.

If you want to keep the shading flat, I'd recommend you only place very saturated/colorful items around your picture's focus. If you're planning to render complex lighting, I'd make the area around your focus lightest, with the rest darker (and then you could keep your variations in saturation).

Variations in hue don't really matter (outside of coolness/warmth, so feel free to vary your colors as much as you'd like. How saturated and light/dark they are is a lot more important to composition.)
>>
>>2514890
Forgot to add, but a good composition should read directly from your thumbnail, so when you think about how to block in your contrast it'll probably help if you start by working small.

Lads, I have two issues.

1. How do I draw a sexy female character without making her lewd? Conservatively sexy?

2. Female character is another character's mother, so I'm trying to draw her with some of his traits, but she keeps coming out looking like a gender-bent version of her son. Is this necessarily bad?
