What do we draw?
>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.
What's a low effort warning?
>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.
>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.
What happens if I'm eliminated?
>A new Last Artist Standing challenge starts every week. If you get eliminated then get it together and rejoin next week.
How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?
>This is a way to let new artists join in and to allow re-entry for the eliminated. Every week a new challenge is started. If you joined on week 1 and make it to week 2 then your daily submission counts for both the first and second Last Artist Standing. If you get eliminated then you're eliminated from both challenges and you'll be able to rejoin next week.
Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?
>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

I'm doing a balanced mix of studies and imaginative works. Isn't that ideal? Most of us are trying to improve, that won't happen if we don't do any studies. And if you don't have the time to do both every day, sometimes you need to sacrifice imaginative stuff to improve your weaknesses.
But I do agree that the people who have only ever posted studies should do more from imagination, because there's no point in studying if you aren't actually using it.

I saw Lavaflake at a Migros in Luzern, CH yesterday.

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen bottles of orange Gatorade that he stuffed into his dress without paying.The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first Lean kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the Gatorades and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bottle and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

I like Picarto because you don't need an account to chat, and I think that's some stupid bullshit that Twitch does. And if my streams were recorded, I'd feel more pressured. You can record streams on both picarto and twitch if you use OBS Studio, just select save to output in the settings. Recording your process is a great way to analyse your workflow and compare it to other speedpaint videos so you get a better idea of what you can improve
It could actually be a better way to receive critique from because you're not only showing people the final product + people giving critiques can spot where in your process you went wrong etc

I only get irritated to the point of rashness from the discomfort of sitting for so long. My chair is too low and my circulation is shit so I need to sit on my legs or at least cross-legged to stay warm and elevated. I know I'm about two steps above a total beginner.
I know I'm still at that level where if I made my own thread or posted my shit for critique in the draw thread, the only response will be "practice more" or "Loomis".
I know that it takes time to reach your goals.
I know you have to temper your expectations and your patience and avoid tackling ambitious projects like making webcomics, telling visual stories or making your "magnum opus" or "piece de resistance", because any attempt to do so would be a waste of time better spent on studies, biomechanical training and developing a visual library. On top of that, it just brings into laser focus the extreme distance between where I am and where I want to be.
So I have been quietly shutting up that inner voice that's saying "draw that piece of fanart you've always wanted to". "Just try a short animation. Come on. You know you want to." "Design that one character. Never mind the fact that you don't understand anatomy and your current level of skill is insufficient to begin such an examination in the first place." It was easy to do so because I genuinely enjoy studies, and with a student's schedule, I'm unable to draw for much too long each day.
But today, for some reason, that voice is screaming "i seriously can't take this anymore how long am i going to have to wait, here punch this wall in frustration at your own stupidity for starting three years later than you intended to".

You HAVE to do those drawings and designs and animations, in spite of your skill not being anywhere near where you want it to be. Take it from someone who's spent years in the being a good student and studying all the time route, you learn fastest when you make things from your mind and then study whatever you sucked the most at in that piece, and then do another one from mind. What about dedicated fundamental sharpening? The digging through vilppu and loomis? Should that be my primary focus until I get to a prerequisite level of skill, THEN I begin this process? Or should that just be happening parallel to these efforts?

No no no dude, you can't just do 100% studies. Something like a webcomic would be a waste of time at this point, but you need to do imaginative stuff to make sure that you're actually learning from your studies and reinforce the knowledge. And stuff like fanart is a good way to boost morale, because it's fun and the character probably makes you happy. Don't spend a large proportion of time on it, but definitely do non-study stuff every now and then. For instance, did you study clothes for the topic? Recall what you learned and try to draw best girl in a nice dress. Also, even if you're starting later than intended, you're a student so I'm assuming you're in the 18-25 range. Assuming you don't die in an accident or of a terminal illness before reaching the end of your natural lifespan, you still have quite a lot of time left to learn. Don't restrict yourself so much that you give up on art. Besides, how will you know when you're good enough to draw satisfying fanart or a smooth and lively animation if you never try? Drawing from imagination is also a good way to identify your weak areas.

Kind of. More like I draw a dragon from my imagination but can't get it to look right in perspective, something to do with the width under the jaw. So I do a few drawings of sneks, komodo dragons, dragon paintings etc to get that shape/thickness right. Then I draw a few dragon heads, till I'm satisfied that that bit is ok.
Then I move onto whatever else I want to draw, maybe a tree or something, but I see I don't know how the fuck bark works, so do some studies of that and how it wraps round the tree, then apply it with a few more sketches.
I think improving one key thing with each drawing is a good way to go, and then I've made a list and like main weekly targets for the next few weeks on larger things that I suck at in all my drawings. Like this week is gesture and getting more free flowing lines, next week is focusing on value, etc etc.
The smaller do sketch, learn how to fix what's wrong, make sure you have it in your head method is good, means I feel like I'm really learning a couple new things each day and that feels really good. And then having the weekly focus always in the back of my mind while doing studies or practice or whatever helps me steadily get better at that over the week too.
But seriously, it's not just important to do little thumbs or doodles of what you want to do as finished work, it's CRITICAL. Otherwise you will get to the stage where you have the technical skills, but no imagination/idea of what it is you wanted to create in the first place.

I think targeted studies are a good way to go about learning once you're at least a little bit familiar with fundamentals. For instance, you should at least know the very basics of perspective (know when to depict more of the top or bottom of a shape, can do a cube in 2-point, etc, but you don't need to have done really complex grids) and basic shapes (sphere in this case) to draw your bunny guy. If you don't know really basic stuff, then even with targeted studies it'll probably look bad. You don't need to know muscle origins/insertions to draw a cartoon but you should at least have a vague idea of proportions and know which direction joints bend in, you know? Personally I frequently do small targeted studies, but I sharpen fundamentals when I have the time to go through a book, or I don't have any other ideas on what to draw, or I notice a major weak point that requires returning to fundamentals. Basically, I think it's good to do both simultaneously. Fundamentals give you a wide, general improvement, and targeted studies give you more narrow improvement but also build up your visual library.
The advice is a slurry because there's not really an objective best way to go about learning. Different things work for different people. Like how this is all based on my personal experience, I am by no means an authority on artistic improvement. So I'm sorry if I just confused you more. For reference I'd say I'm at a mediocre level, not glaringly bad but not impressive.

I don't find it so bad. It's very logical, even more so than German, which I love. Like they don't make a new word for plumber, they just put things together, like water-worker-man, things like that. Same with the writing, it's just combinations of things. Like big+person means adult, person+person+person means crowd, etc. Likewise there's not as many tenses and such like in other languages, I don't think the Chinese have a future tense at all, which has psychological effects on how they plan and save but that's a different topic.
It's really damn hard in terms of speaking though. It's a tonal language, like vietnamese or thai, so hard to pick up if you're used to western languages or japanese. I can hear things right most of the time now, but I know if I tried to speak to someone they wouldn't have a clue what I was saying. Get the tone wrong and you say a completely different word.

Speaking Chinese is a breeze. I could slap some characters together and it would probably be fine. It's a comfortable language that's very forgiving syntax-wise. I also never had a problem with tones, because apparently asian people are, apparently, genetically predisposed to learn that sort of thing.
Reading and writing is fucking annoying. There's no logical way to intuit what sound a character makes (meaning, however, can be very vaguely extracted by the components that make up the character), so you have to memorize fucking everything.

If you're serious about the whole art thing I'd try and make some more time for it every day. I've been spending a few hours on studies/improving and then a few hours on drawing fun stuff that makes me happy. It's keeping me sane through the grind to git gud and it's still helpful.
All the shit you mentioned is fine to mix in. If you want to make a dumb animation then just do it, you're not somehow gimping yourself by doing it now instead of in 2 years when your fundamentals are in place, you'll still learn about the software and get useful experience even if it's just stick figures.

Yeah it's down to the forms and edges mainly I think. Girls are soft and then some places can be more defined/sharper like the jawline or eyes or cheekbones, but even then they're not as solid looking as a man's.
I'll try do a paintover if I can but basically your forms are more manly right now, like see how wide and strong the cheekbones/jaw/chin are right now, and how the nose is a clearly defined almost square feature.
Even without long hair and such you can see the feminine features of the smaller and rounder jawline, the far side of the face has the cheekbone and eye ridge protruding but not much else, etc. I suggest finding a girl you want your paintings to look like, your archetype, and then figure out what makes her feminine.

I think a lot of people just color manually when magic wand is too insensitive. I spent over two hours today fucking manually coloring. I hate working with lineart. Lineless painting is so much comfier. But Krita (and I think GIMP) have a tool called GMic that colorfills like you can do with magic wand, but it's much better and can even tolerate gaps. It's still not perfect, but it saves a lot of gap filling and edge cleaning. I could have saved time if I used it today, but I forgot about it and then by the time I remembered I was already like 1/3 of the way done with the flats and I'm a stubborn piece of shit so I wanted to just keep going. But I don't think there's a tool like that in SAI. Try adjusting the sensitivity of the magic wand, unless you have and the lowest setting still doesn't work.

That's what he wants you to think but I saw JMGN at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen strange doughnuts in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the doughnuts and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.
