Are external HDDs less reliable than internal ones?

Let's assume we're comparing the latest WD Blue 2TB to the latest WD Elements 2TB.
>>
How do I troubleshoot this?

My Chinkpad won't turn on anymore. The LED on the logo lights up, the disk starts spinning and the fan makes a very quiet revving noise - in a pattern like "vrrrmm vrm vrrrmm vrm". The screen doesn't come on.
Sometimes if you shake the thing really hard it either turns on or gives a beep code. Unfortunately I couldn't make it do that in a while, so I don't know what the beeps mean.

If it does turn on theres a big chance it just completely freezes sooner or later, both on Wangblows and Leenux.

I don't even know where to start, it's so weird.
>>
>>54711788
In my experience they're pretty much the same. Only real difference is the external HDD has a higher chance of becoming permanently damaged from falls since it will have a higher chance of being exposed to them.
>>
Everytime i use a filechooser,be it in a browser or an application, after about 5 uses,it locks up and cannot escape the filechooser, forcing it to close.Running it from terminal shows no errors.
>>
>>54711809
I already opened it up and removed the Harddrive. idk what that should have accomplished but I remember it gave me lots of sector errors up until it crapped itself.

>>54711788
IMO internal HDs always live longer, since they can be cooled easier and are not as exposed to outside bullshit or falls etc. inside a case.
source: ruined tons of external HDs, not a single internal one.
>>
>>54711809
It sounds like motherboard is kill. Not much you can do except buy another chinkpad or build a cheap AM1/FM2+ desktop build if you don't travel much.

Soooo I have two sticks of 8gb ram, my pc only detects the stick in the first slot. After some fucking around I was able to find that apparently my computer thinks I have 8gb of virtual ram, and 8gb of physical ram. I don't even fucking know, and I can't do the ram swap test because my hsf is massive and hangs over the second channel., don't really have the nerve to take it off after I just built this thing. Anything I can do in the bios to potentially unfuck my ram?

Am I retarded or is there no actual difference between these RAM sets:

I was installing ubuntu on a seperate hard drive on my computer, and i had to cut it short so I just turned off my computer. I plugged all my normal hard drives back in, and rebooted my system.
It gave me a weird error message that had to do with a NAS filesystem and it was unable to boot.
I popped in a windows 10 repair disc, did the two bootrec commands, and it was fine.
Now, i just got home from work and i sat down and turned my PC on. It flashed the screen that said "f11 to blah DEL to blah" and then it went straight to "Reboot and Select Proper Boot Device or Insert Boot media.."
I popped in my Win10 repair disc and hit a key.
It did nothing. So i hit my numlock key to see if my keyboard was even working, and it didnt light up.
So i plugged it into a USB 2.0 port and rebooted, and it still wouldnt let me hit a key.
So i unplugged and plugged in my computer, booted it up, and it went to the "f11 blah DEL blah" and i hit Delete, and my keyboard isnt working.

TL;DR keyboard isnt working on boot and i cant et past the "reboot and select proper boot device"

Out of curiosity, what type of Thinkpad do you have? I actually had a VERY similar problem with my T520. I was able to get it to boot by clearing the CMOS, but I continued to be plagued with all sorts of bizarre system issues and instability. It just sort of started working after awhile, but I returned it nonetheless.

I have to recover a partition from a disk where the partition table & backup partition table were rewritten with new partitions but the old partitions are still (probably) on the disk.

I did some cursory googling and found this list of partition recovery software:

Which ones has /g/ tried, and how did it go?

Up until now (probably 1 or 2 weeks) my RAID0 SSD array has been fine. Playing some games yesterday and today now randomly results in the RAID array dropping 1 of the drives rendering it useless. The data itself is not gone because a restart restores the array.

Is there any reason a drive would just drop out of the array?

Whelp, there's probably your problem. Hate to say it, but those are shit and known to have electrical issues.

Either its dead,or your software array is just shitting its self. There really isnt anything to go with if you dont post logs,if you even have the capability of having logs on a software raid

you clealy dont understand what an ssd will accomplish for you.

Buy a 2 or 4 port raid card and have proper performance.

Anyone here have a GA-Z170X UD5? If so, I'd like to hear your thoughts on it. Thinking about picking one up.

Furthermore, how suitable would it be for a moderate-high overclock of a 6700K? I wouldn't be doing any ridiculously extreme shit, mind you. Well obviously you have to get rid of e set first senpai. Click on the start taskbar and type in "Add or remove programs". Then search up e set or whatever and get rid of it.

If you still can't get rid of the fucker there or it isn't there then you will have to start your computer in safe mode and search for it in the program file directories on C:\ and delete the files within to get rid of the old antivirus.

Finally I recommend you install the free version of Malwarebytes instead, it's the last decent free antivirus out there. All the other ones are bloated as fuck and consume a fuckton of CPU resources just to exist doing nothing but look fancy.

>I think I might benefit from the hardware 10-bit support for the times when I don't download HorribleSubs.
On a desktop? Power consumption between software and hardware 10-bit decoding is pretty meaningless. You'll save like a few cents a year. Your monitor waste more energy playing back chinese cartoons than the processor does decoding the video.

Anyway if you're interesting in hardware decoding then you'd just get a GPU and use MPC + madvr. This is only really useful if you're playing 4k blu-ray remuxes of chinese cartoons though.

you can buy a cable modem on Amazon.
No one smart enough to navigate to /g/ should be using an ISP rental modem.
>>
>>54713371
From a technical standpoint, yeah, it's called double NAT. Easy to check for, just see if your router's external IP address is 192.168.x.x. If they control the modem login then you're screwed, unless you were to falsify credentials, which is probably a massive breach of contract and possibly local laws if they own the modem and you are just being leased it.
From a practical standpoint, I've never heard of anything like this, Jewish conspiracy or otherwise.

>How do I into proper airflow?

the simple answer is the more fans (i.e., more airflow) the better, and the larger the fans the better as they typically move more air for less noise (however 12cm fans are by far the most popular and you'll get the best cfm:noise ratio for the least amount of money on 12cm fans than say 14cm fans) -- however you can't just have all intakes or all exhausts as having at least one of each is equally as important

if you're using 8cm fans I'm going to assume it's an old or dodgy case, in which case the manual might not help, but most case manuals tell you which fan mounts should be in what configuration, but typically exhausts are at the top/back/side and intakes are at the front/bottom/side

whether or not your general airflow direction is front to back or back to front is almost irrelevant (like, <5c worse case scenario, heat rises so front to back is generally preferable but it makes almost no difference because there's active airflow), the only important thing is that you have intakes and have exhausts as they're both somewhat equally important, however the number for each is generally irrelevant so long as you have some of each

there's some idea however that more intake fans results in higher air pressure which results in less dust but whether it actually has an effect on dust remains to be seen, and having more exhausts than intakes isn't ideal because the airflow has to be coming from somewhere (typically intakes or grills)

so, whatever you do, changing the configuration of fans (exhaust, intake) is probably irrelevant so long as you have at least 1 of each but removing a fan will definitely fuck with temps to some degree

>>54717264
>You want equal intake and exhaust perfectly opposite each other.

it doesn't need to be an equal amount of intake:exhausts if it's an odd number of fans though, and sometimes more intakes is preferable just for ease of configuration on most cases

Theyre 120mm actually, not sure why I typed 80mm.

It's a very very cheap case. I made a pretty good rig on a budget in 2011 but I should have spent a bit more on the case. Lesson learnt.

I will mess around a bit more but I doubt I'll be able to get it to improve the temperatures much.

nothing really but xeons (especially low end) tend to have shitty clocks and the lack of overclocking doesn't make them ideal for gaming/general purpose desktop use due to the general requirement for higher single core performance so probably the cpu if anything if you're finding it's bottlenecking you for some bits

personally I couldn't go back to a single monitor but I don't quite have a 1440p monitor so that's likely personal choice (and depends on how much desk space you have)

>>54717078

what country are you in? go find out how much your sockets are rated for and add up the wattage of what you're plugging in

I'll make it easy, uk runs at 240v (ish) with typical extension lead fuses being 13a = 240*13 = 3.1k~ watts before the fuse blows to protect the cable, but ideally you want a few hundred watts below that in case of peak power spikes, and for countries that don't provide fuses just look at how much amps the cable is rated for and work it out by multiplying your voltage standard by the amps on the cable to get maximum wattage

the danger of overloading sockets is generally the cables getting too much power than they're rated for, getting hot, melting the insulation and shorting

>I will mess around a bit more but I doubt I'll be able to get it to improve the temperatures much.

I mean, under IDEAL circumstances and under proper testing conditions (where you account for room temperature), the difference between proper high performance case fans and general cheap case fans is minimal (<10-15% at worse), and the difference in fan layout is probably indiscernible from general variations between tests, unless you do something silly (like having the top rear fan be an intake, back rear be an exhaust), I wouldn't worry about it too much

just slap as much case fans in the general intake/exhaust layout as you can tolerate the noise and be done with it, quality heatsinks > fan performance on heatsink > thermal paste > case fans > case fan layout as far as the priorities should be

Ahaha fucking hell, of course the fucking desktop client has built-in intrusive sound ads playing between tracks too of course. Immediately closed and uninstalled this piece of shit when the first one started playing just now.

God FUCKING damnit, really. This is why i was using the web player version exclusively, ublock and adblock et al work perfectly when it comes to blocking the sounds ads. I get the feeling the spotify devs have fucked the web player up on purpose and make it refuse to stream songs to you if it detects you're blocking those ads. Fucking greedy motherfuckers i swear fuck

Dear /sqt/.

I keep reposting the question because I couldnt get any answer in previous threads.

I have a problem of applications written in Pascal not running under Windows 8.1N with Media Pack installed. The same applications runs flawlessly under Win 7 and 10 (all three x64). Whenever I double click or open cmd and just type "start x.exe" nothing happen - no error message, nothing.

The applications in question were compiled by using either Free or Turbo Pascal. I dont have source code myself.

I need those for work and this is kinda annoying to not be able to work on my laptop, instead transfering files and work between home and work desktops.

Thank you for any reply, like always.

So I'm running Windows 7, and some programs just won't open.

I launch the program, say Dropbox in this instance, and I can see in the task manager that the process is started up, then as soon as the memory counter hits ~50,000K the program just freezes and doesn't progress. CPU usage is also abnormally high for the program; around ~20 CPU usage.

What the hell's the deal? I use Dropbox every day and I can't have it fucking around like this. I used to do the same to me with VLC, but it's started working properly again. I ran a malware scan in safe mode (as the program doesn't open normally), and had no issues on that end. I also used repair.com windows repair tool but to no avail.

Anyone have any idea what the fuck's going on?
>>
>>54719283

Depends on the quality of your house/apartment's wiring. IIRC, unless you know for sure, you shouldn't put a load of more than ~1000w per "real" socket. It shouldn't be much of an issue unless you're trying to power like five high end PC's off the same plug or running a literal wall of monitors. Just be careful with appliances though, I never realized how much power a clothes iron pulled. Stuck it on the power strip my PC was on while that was on as well and it tripped the breaker in the strip.

Had a hardware RAID using that fake intel RAID shit.

It's surprisingly stupid.
If your drive drops out of the array for a moment only to pop back up, it will just assume the drive is dead.
When it's reseated it won't detect the drive or any information on it.

Had a RAID5 rebuild itself every time I swapped out drive 2 using rapid storage.

Promptly transfered all my files into a Linux ZFS volume.
No problems since and it's super plastic compared to fake RAID.
Also get some redundancy, RAID0 is unsafe.

I remember maybe 8 years ago or so I used a program on a netbook with Windows XP that allowed me to run it faster by not saving files to the hard drive while it was running. Had to basically issue a command to save any changes.

Is anything out there like that for windows 8.1? I have a really slow tablet, I suspect it's because of the memory that it's so slow.
