I'm looking to build a work computer for my mom and I noticed the CPU I bought for myself a few years ago (4670) outperforms the current i5 in the ~185USD price point (6400) which is around what I paid

Is this just intel Jewery or am I an idiot?
The only benefit to this new CPU seems to be that it's actually available at a normal price

Should I pursue a career in theoretical or applied computer science? On one hand, writing programs is kinda cool and theory is rarely applicable anywhere other than universities. On the other, I don't want to be a code monkey, and the theory of computers if very interesting.

Academia versus Industry. Don't get into theoretical stuff if you don't wish to work in an academical field.
Also most theoretical comsci degrees are math-oriented or at least have a large amount of math classes; that's how it usually goes in my county.

Also, math is way different than what you've learned until now (I take it you just gratuated high school) and might get old very, very quickly if you aren't really into it, just because you had passable/good grades in hs doesn't mean you'll have an easy time at uni

ExecUpPost='/usr/bin/ip link set eth0 mtu 9000'

I have made a "profile" that has the connection data, that works, but when ever i add the above line,it just errors/ignores it and starts the profile for the connection

On Linux there is a single tree, starting at the root. Filesystems can then be mapped to any directory in the tree.

I don't come here often but I just need to ask for someones input on this.

My computer keeps loosing it's connection to the graphics card at random times. Sometimes when I try to boot it just says "Please power down and connect the PCI-e cables" and sometimes it happens when I'm already using the computer. And whenever I touch the cables with the softest of touches, it loses connection instantly. To solve this all of this, I have ripped of the side of my case to allow the cables to hang out freely. This appears to be the only position in which they can maintain a stable connection.

Now, I have made sure that both the 6 and 8 pin PCI-cables actually are connected to the card. I have an EVGA GeForce GTX 770.

Does anyone know what is causing this?

If it's a fresh install, you have nothing to lose but another 5 minutes of starting the install + maybe waiting some time if you don't have stuff to do, so there's that.

If you want to search for the problem:
>is the monitors ALWAYS black and actually not responding ever? Could be a GPU (driver?) problem, try a different GPU or monitor
>Do you get response, but then it goes black and refuses to do anything? Could be a Windows problem and you will need to reinstall anyway

The temps NEVER leave 93C?

The next time your PC has been off for a while (so you are 100% sure it's room temperature), then boot your computer and ASAP check the readings. If it says 93C, it's a reading problem and not a problem with your GPU at all. Your GPU should not reach more than maybe 40-50 degrees by the time you enter windows and start working on stuff. You will know when it's overheating for real (screen artifacts, random blackouts, smoke and fires if you're on nVidia, etc). Good luck!

Download TCPview and see what's using the internet. Just sort it by "Bytes sent" or "Bytes recieved" and you'll see who rises the ranks. Find the annoying program and tell it to behave or get rid of it.

I use Aida64 (successor of Everest) to monitor my shit as well, it's a great tool if you're willing to set it up to your liking. In AIDA you can see what network card(s) are taking up how much KB/s to see if it's actually your computer using the bandwidth or if it's someone else...

I have a GTX 980Ti, as well as some WD Blacks already.

However, it was a while ago I tried putting something together, so I wonder if this would work?
Would that PSU be able to power all of this?

Nothing incompatible as far as I can tell
Number of ways you could trim the cost down, just depends on what you don't want cut back on. You probably don't need an i7 for gaming and drawing, could go to a 6600k. Cooler is pretty excessive, a regular air cooler would be fine.

Drives will be assigned a device id in the root directory, like /dev/sdx

Partitions will look like /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2 for instance.

You then have the option of mounting them to another location, like "/mnt/flashdrive"

A lot of disros handle this shit automatically but if you are using something like arch, you'll have to configure fstab and other fuckery to get your drives to be accessible.

Typically when there is a drive, it will be assigned a name in the root directory in /dev. The drive may look like /dev/sdx# with x assigning the drive and # assigning the partition. Drives are also identified by their UUID which is a long string of shit.

Most distros will assign a mount point directly but if you're an arch fuckhead like me, you'll have to configure fstab and other fuckery to assign mountpoints, but you can mount a drive basically anywhere you want in the filesystem, like /mnt/flashdrive for instance.

Update: I want steam so I can talk to people through the client while using Linux. And so I can join chatrooms. I have another 1 GB flashdrive laying around, maybe that could help.
>>
>>54725115
dont see any reason why not, linux isnt really that picky on what you install it on honestly, a good flash drive on a usb 3.0 port beats a shitty WD green any day.
I'd say give it a go if you have a free day and a spare machine to try and install it on the USB stick, might be a fun project to keep your mind busy and if you get it working make a guide for the /g/ wiki so others can do it as well.

I did some cursory googling, and found this list:

Which includes: RecoverBits, MiniTool, Stellar Phoenix, Kernel For Windows Data Recovery, EaseUS Partition Table Doctor, DiskInternals NTFS recovery, gpart, TestDisk, Systools partition data recovery, M3 RAW drive recovery.

I am partial to testdisk because GPL, but what really matters is how well it works at partition recovery, and I want to hear about your experiences. I have to recover a NTFS partition from a disk where the main and backup partition tables got rewritten.

and the kicker
>only 16gb SSD internal.

All my other storage is based on a 128gb MicroSD card. Problem is that even a class 10 card only sees 10MB/s transfer speeds and Chromebooks by default don't accept any other format for SD cards than FAT32 so having 1080p blu-ray rips etc are out of the question due to the 4gb file size limit.

After looking around I found that my model (and I physically verified myself by taking off the bottom panel) has a removable SSD. It uses an m.2 2242 42mm ssd. I was looking at pic related.

Anyone know if ADATA is a decent brand? The reviews seem to reflect the product as rather good.

i'm running mac osx. the crazy gf of a friend who i think may be watching me (i was on campus and just turned around to see her watching me through the window)...i need a discreet video recording software preferably free so she's not aware i'm recording anything because I'm somewhat starting to feel a bit concerned but don't have any real evidence yet.

Alright /sqt/, I have some questions to you.

I have a MetroPCS Android device, and only the MetroPCS SIM card works on it. What can I do to change this? I'd like to use a SIM card other than the MetroPCS one.

And I have two notebooks and a external HD. I want to copy every file, program configurations and so on from the old notebook to the new one, is it possible?

Thanks in advance.

It's a LG G Stylo.

I've tried out TestDisk. It's always found the partition, but is never able to restore it. I have no idea why. On the plus side, it is always able to recover the files I've needed.
>>
>>54730293
if you know where the partition starts and how big it is, you can use a partitioning tool like parted to "restore" it
>>
>>54730337
I could try to do that if TestDisk didn't give out obviously wrong partition parameters. That might have something to do with it not being able to restore things on its own.

I need to transfer media from an old Motorola E815, but have misplaced my old 256mb micro sd card. Any idea where I can get one, besides china? They're on Amazon for like $40 which seems fucking asinine... Is there any way for me to spoof my current 8GB+ cards into a smaller size so the phone can deal with them?

You should be good with anything ≤2GB, which can be had for a few dollars.
>>
>>54730567
You could try formatting them FAT16

the specs I find online list the max at 512, is that just because that was the biggest available at the time? Where does the +/- 2 GB limit come from, different file table formatting or some shit?

>is that just because that was the biggest available at the time?
Yes. Just like you see phones now saying they have a 128GB max, if it supports >64GB it supports up to 2TB.
>Where does the +/- 2 GB limit come from
There's SD, SDHC, and SDXC. Your phone only supports SD, which is a 2GB max.

Do you mean that I can copy every configuration and etc to the external HD, and then move it to the new notebook? How I'd do it? Just copy/paste the whole thing? Point me in the right direction please.

So I accidentally got this fucking shit mobo (GA-78LMT-S2P) and it will only let me use 1 of my 2 RAM slots for software, essentially handicapping me to 4GB RAM out of a total of 8. I toyed with the related settings in the BIOS setup but nothing has changed. It keeps forcing the one slot to hardware for no reason
What the fuck do I do?

Just built a pc for the first time. I still feel like I have no idea what I'm doing. I haven't bought a gpu yet since the new ones havent come out, will I be able to get a 970 or 980 cheaper soon? Also what am I supposed to do after installing windows? Is the search for updated drivers option sufficient or do I need to visit the sites for each part to get drivers? Also is there anything wrong in the pic? anything I need to fix?

how can I get basic protection from http://website.informer.com/ and other methods of getting my personal information? I'd prefer a cheap/free method. I haven't bought web hosting or a domain yet so now is the time to figure this out, just in case I could maybe put in fake details or something.
