IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

So help me out guys, I got a t400 and for the time ever I'm going to actually start taking steps to replace a hard drive myself...... I have never ever done anything like this. Is this a good ssd?

Also I've been googling it for a while how hard would it be for me to permanently mess things up?
>>
>>54710673
Crucial or Samsung for SSD. The Samsung 850 is probably your best bet. Some people over in /csg/ have some Chingchong brand (KingDian?) that is fast and so far has been very reliable. Make sure it's a 7mm drive.

If you're not doing intense disk I/O tasks (and don't need wireless WAN), consider an mSATA SSD. It's SATA2 but it leaves the drive bay open for a big fucking mechanical drive for storage, which apparently you will already have.

RAM - pretty much anything is fine. Hynix is what it probably came with. I think there's a BIOS mod that lets you use faster RAM, so look into that before buying anything.
>>
>>54710858
According to the wiki you need a 1.8" SSD. Yours is 2.5
>>
>>54710858
I assume you're a Windowsbabby, so the drive migration software it comes with will probably work fine for you.

PATA SSDs exist. Don't know if it's worth it from a performance standpoint, but it might be as compared to a 7200RPM drive.

Get an unfucked Windows XP SP3 from torrents and compare the MD5sums. I don't think you can download it from MS servers anymore. Maybe there's an archive link somebody can provide. Your key will work if it's the same version of XP (Home or Pro OEM).

>>54711890
Don't put shit in holes you don't need. They just eat power, even at idle. T42 is already crunched for battery life.

Something like this might work for you for an unneeded PCIe slot if you actually need the storage space:

>>
>>54710939
The T400 uses a standard 2.5" hard drive. I've replaced the one on mine twice now, and I can say without a shadow of doubt that the standard size is just fine.

>>54710673
I put a Samsung 840 Evo in my T400 and so far it's been performing just fine. Completely revitalized the computer, feels way faster than my W520 (which is still using the original Seagate 500GB hard drive... with over 30,000 power-on hours)

Sup /tpg/. I need a new laptop, and I've considered purchasing the recommended t420. The Thinkpad will be used at home and school. Should I get one with the Intel HD 3000 or the dedicated nvidia? I want to play games like osu and League of Legends. Don't care much about texture details, as long as it runs them smoothly. Also, will the Nvidia gpu drain lots more power than the HD 3000? Thank you.
>>
>>54716747
Get the nvidia no matter what, you cna always disable it since all T420 laptops have intel graphics on their cpu even with an nvidia chip.
>>
So my company has given me the choice of T460S, X1 Carbon or the Thinkpad Yoga 460/ 14 inch.

Which one out of them is more durable and dosen't throttle/overheat like a bitch when I compile or run something computationally intensive for about 5minutes. Would like the screen to look alright. not a photographer.
>>
>>54717351
T460s is the obvious choice here.
>>
My chances of getting a T450s are slimming down as I was offered a refurbished one but the supply isn't reliable (waiting quite a bit already)
I was offered as alternative a HP EliteBook 840 G3

What do

I generally dislike HPs since most of the stuff I saw with people so far wasn't very durable

Last time I purchased a laptop was a Vaio TZ in fucking 2008 and is still working, original battery holding for over 4h and snappy as ever after a ssd and ram upgrade some years ago.

I'm interested in getting a T420 myself. Where can I find one without a battery/adapter/hdd/ram? I was hoping to get one with an iGPU and i5. Hell, if it doesn't have a display and keyboard that's fine by me. I want to buy my own 900p display and cable, ssd, adapter, batteries, keyboard, and RAM. I just want one in good condition.Seeing as how Newegg has a functional refurb with all the stuff for $300, I think I'd be willing to spend $150 - $200 on a good quality T420. Anyone know of a stable supply of them?
>>
>>54718195

70 degrees is really not all that hot. My T400 used to hit 90 after a few hours of gaming. That may have contributed to the death of the fan, but only after a good 6 years.

This is the thing. Most of us think of laptops in their singular role for mobile computing, complementing a desktop for "serious" work. Some people either want a consolidated, singular device for all uses, or can't afford more than one device.

It's all about use case.

>People who say that the T420S HD+ panel is shit are really not exaggerating, my T520's FHD TN panel is 10 times better in all aspects.
Yeah I currently have a T420s and the screen is terrible.
Though, isn't the biggest drawback that it's TN instead of IPS? So aside from pixel density there should be no difference between the FHD TN panel of your T520 and the HD+ TN panel in your T420s?

Also, how much did you pay for the Optronics screen?

It's the living room of my apartment, jesus, how dumb are you?

>>54721976

>>
>>54722036
>>54721976
After asking the seller on ebay that he had the exact panel that I wanted in stock (and not a "compatible" TN panel), I ordered mine here:
http://www.benl.ebay.be/itm/401052221594?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

So even this guy actually markets the wrong panel, but I prefer the 1.2 anyway (AG coating).

I have no idea why people complain, it fulfills all realistic expectations. I doubt the x220 could be better in any way but the keyboard, which supposedly isn't difficult to down/upgrade to. Everything else about the x230 should, on paper, be better.
>>
>>54723161
Well I just bought one for 200$ i5 4g ram. I hope it will be awesome. sad theres no hdmi port tho, also mine has the fingerprint sensor on it which make me a bit sckeptical because it might be annoying for the palm.

Under the battery section?

Also, if you're buying a new machine, get the 3 year NBD onsite warranty. (you can even jew it for new keyboards and PSUs)

What if I'm not in the USA?

Laptop keyboard, mechanically, are similar to ALPS switches. They have little plastic scissors that hold the key in place, and that respectively presses on a relatively steep exposed rubberdome.
You don't need a strictly mechanical keyboard on a thinkpad. They feel like mech kbs. They are just great.
>>
>>54734601
The old ThinkPads used real mechanical keyboards though. I wouldn't say it typed better, but the difference is definitely noticeable. It's a matter of preference I guess.
>>
How do I calculate if a thinkpad is worth the money. I'm pretty sure I've found an alright deal. Nothing amazing, but nothing terrible, just kind of ok.

* NMB keyboard
* T4x NMB keyboard (for the gray keys. If you can live with the bolder font on the alphanumeric keys, replace them too, the keys are more durable);
* two japanese NMB keyboards, for the square Alt key with the green font on each one (users with an ISO Enter also may like the captioned Enter key);

If you like the stock black keys, you can get an X30* keyboard for the excellent keys. DON'T FORGET THE JAPANESE GREEN ALTS TOO.

Oh, and mod doubleshot mouse buttons too.

Then, after the keyboard is perfect, get a decent panel, 8GB of DDR2, a T61 nVidia planar of your choice with a safe date (or Intel video for more battery life), SSD, if you have the balls do the quadcore mod, if you want a Blu-ray drive (and optional absence of touchpad) then use an R60 shell instead of a T60. Remember to replace the hideous yellow LED of the ThinkLight in this case.

And don't be a cheap skate, look for an original IBM bag.
>>
>>54734735
yeah, because Rubberdome weren't cheaper than mech kb's at that point.
Really, people complaining about Thinkpad keyboards, even about the newer ones (except the 6row bullshit, that's justified) are just spewing bullshit. Thinkpad keyboards are right up there with mech keyboards in terms of feel.
And because weight is an issue with laptops, rubberdome is entirely justified.
>>
>>54731557
The only real drawback is the keyboard (for some) and slightly higher price tag.
>>
Does anyone actually use the fingerprint scanner?
>>
>>54734875
I don't. I even disabled it in the BIOS.
>>
>>54734875
No, it wouldnt scan right on linux.
>all these french road signs in captcha
>>
>>54734875
I use it as a BIOS password to discourage theft/make the thief not able to do anything with it if they steal it.
No use within the OS itself though.
>>
Fellas. X230 or T430? Any of you have first hand experience with either?
>>
>>54735086
whatever formfactor suits you better.
The only difference in hardware is that the 430 has an ultrabay and the screen.
If you can get an IPS screen, the 230 is definitely not a bad choice.
Not sure if you can swap it in the 430.

I dont mind. I dont really do anything hardware intensive.
>>
Gonna get x230 for them sweet power-efficiency, then mod an IPS panel in it. While there, I'll flash the bios and install an x220 keyboard because I'm not going to use awful chick-lets.
>>
To those with an X series Thinkpad, is it too small? Do you wish the screen is bigger? Would staring at that small screen cause eyestrain?
>>
>>54735577
Nah it feels fine and high dpi, i use an external monitor with it anyway
>>
Anyone know if coreboot or libreboot will work on an X201? And if so, any one tried it?
>>
Are the processors not upgradable with the X series?
>>
Got myself an x220 with a 120 gig SSD for 175 europs from the US.
I'm happy that I didn't get taxed.

Something's rattling in it though. It's a bit unsettling.
>>
Is there a way to get a X220 with a FHD IPS panel?
Or do I have to get the X240?

Also what is a good price for each right now?
>>
>>54734836
Got a picture of this perfect ThinkPad setup? Haven't fapped today yet.

anyone know if the hv121wx4-133 is an affs screen?

Hey guys I have a t420 already did the ssd upgrade and 8 gb ram anything else I could do I'm kinda retarded with tech is the screen upgrade plug and play? It do I have to mess with the ribbon cable?
>>
>>54735609
Coreboot - Maybe

Libreboot is impossible since it has a intel i-series CPU which is inherently incompatible with libreboot
>>
I want to get a blu-ray burner for my X220's ultrabase. I can't seem to figure out the appropriate FRU.

Is there a difference in build quality? I've heard the construction of x230 felt a little flimsy

Speaking of OS/2, anybody run eComm Station on a Thinkpad?
>>
>>54736567
I've had ever gen from X60 - X260. The build quality from X60 - X230 got gradually worse and worse. From X240 onwards the build quality came back but at the expense of becoming more an more Macbook like and hard to open/maintain. X200/X201/X220 is sweet spot for me for old thinkpads, I'd choose an X250 or X260 over a X230.
