Gaymen question.

Do I understand correctly that simply increasing the core and memory clocks of a graphics card, without increasing voltages and without allowing it to overheat, will not accelerate electromigration or otherwise damage the card/reduce its useful lifespan?

If the above is correct, why is OCing still seen as a dangerous/warranty-voiding activity and why doesn't literally every single person who buys a card OC it?

If you don't increase voltage you may end up with instability
>>

Right. But let's assume I decide not to, and just get the clocks as high as I can on the stock voltage without artifacting/instability.
>>
>>54635118
You can, but the gains will be minimum and stress testing it takes time.

I need to upload a 1.87 GB video file over DDL, and I did so, through MEGA. The problem is that I didn't know about the bandwidth limitation. While downloading the file for testing I got a warning saying that I had exceeded my quota (for downloading 1.50 GB over the last six hours) and I realized that other people trying to download it would run into the same issue.

So, the question is: what would be a better service to upload this file to? One that allows more than 2GB uploads and uninterrupted downloads.
>>
>>54635237
Clock speeds scale automatically
>>
>>54635075

In principle you're still making it work more, out of spec, so yes, you actually will accelerate electromigration and reduce lifespan, even when keeping the temps under control. Increasing voltage is what truly makes it dangerous.

Dear /sqt/.

I have a problem with various programs made at my work that refuse to even start at my Windows 8.1 on laptop, while working flawlessly on Windows 7 on home desktop and work desktop.

No matter if I double click or open cmd and type "start x.exe", nothing happenes.

All three are 64bit ones.

How can I check what blocks it from running?
>>
>>54635153
>>54635155
I did. I OC'd my 960 a decent bit (not sure of the exact numbers, not booted to Windows now) without tweaking the voltage, and it seems to work fine. Got artefacts past a certain point, reduced it a bit and they were gone. Standard stuff, as I understand it.

Played a few hours of RotTR on mostly-High (& Very High textures) and it was the difference between locked 1440p30 and... not.

>>54635277
See this is what I assumed before. But from researching it, I can't actually find what would actually stress it from simply "working more"- assuming stock voltage and reasonable temps. Can you give any more details?

>>54635237
Yes you can just leave it. Your OC only affects the highest performance step; outside of games your GPU/memory still clocks down as normal.

>>
>>54635377
All batteries self-discharge to some degree, and many phones aren't truly 100% off when they're "off". Your own drain may or may not be normal depending on how fast it happens.
>>
>>54635345
>I can't actually find what would actually stress it from simply "working more"

It's just that: working more. The fact that currents travel through the transistors in the chip slowly destroys them with time. Make it work more often (more cycles per second) and more current has to flow in a fixed time, accelerating the damage. Not accounting for the extra heat, doubling the frequency would be like using the card twice as long in the same period of time.
>>
>>54635345
>Yes you can just leave it. Your OC only affects the highest performance step; outside of games your GPU/memory still clocks down as normal.
does this apply to overclocked cpus too? how long can i run the game for without damaging the cpu/gpu?
>>
>>54635460
You can configure the CPU settings in the BIOS, if you want it can use adaptive settings or constant

Temperature is the main factor
Try not to exceed 80C for GPUs and 70C for CPUs
>>
>>54635460
>does this apply to overclocked cpus too?

Roughly yes, if you don't disable the speedstep function (which there's no reason to do unless you're doing extreme overclocking).

Are we talking "it will last 3 years instead of 6" or "it will last 15 years instead of 20"? I'm not all that familiar with electronics' natural lifespans. If it's more like that latter, it seems like a very abstract matter since no-one uses a GPU for that long.

>>54635460
Generally CPUs do clock up/down as needed too, although it will probably run at full speed rather more often than your GPU will.

>>
>>54635646
No, overclocking it generally doesn't void the warranty, however if the problem is found to be due to overclocking your warranty may not cover it.
>>
>>54635573

Again not accounting for the extra heat, at fixed voltages the lifespan would scale linearly with the (inverse of) frequency, in my gross extimation based on a very limited model of the wearing dynamic. I believe that fairly used gaming cards don't typically reach 15 years.

>>54635646
>am i just being paranoid of the them catching fire when i'm sleeping?

I suggest you to use a monitoring tool (such as MSI Afterburner for the GPU) and see for yourself how frequencies switch and temps change.

I think I might have some sort of virus, but after doing a full scan using MSE it couldn't find anything.

I'm using Chrome and have that setting which keeps my tabs open for me enabled. The past few times I've turned my computer on, whatever tab is currently open isn't what page I was on originally, but http://one-night-affair.com/?u=0t0pae3&o=1c0e9u2&t=. I can click back to get to the original page though. But the thing is is that I just restarted my computer to see if it would happen again but it didn't. What the fuck? I haven't downloaded any sketchy files on this computer, adblock has been enabled since the second I installed this browser, and haven't used it to watch porn in a really long time. I recently reinstalled Windows on here too so it couldn't be something from months ago.

Any idea what this might be? If it's worth mentioning, the pages it's opened itself up so far on are /vg/ threads. It didn't happen when I tried restarting with a Google page open.

Consider how long 1080 has taken. Modern graphics cards are barely pushing 4k60, you want essentially 12k 144. How about we get to 4k 120 first. Could be in for another big performance boom though now that we've got another die shrink.

You shouldn't miss a cable, everything should be in the boxes. Even if you can just buy new one, they're dirty cheap. As long as you can follow instructions, you won't fuck it up. Watch on youtube tips on building your own PC, or building PC from the scratch. Even if you fuck something up, you can go to local pc store and ask them to check, why it's not working

>does 2/4 way sli/crossfire mean double/quadruple the performance/fps?
Absolutely not. 2-way SLI generally gives 1.5x performance at best
>is sli/crossfire recommended in general?
If the CPU you have is bottlenecked by your GPU (your CPU prerenders frames faster than the GPU can render them, this is kinda rare) AND your GPU and mobo support SLI AND you can afford a second copy of your GPU, but you can't afford to buy a GPU that would give better performance than SLI-ing your current one, then go for it. If ANY of these is not true, don't do it.

You may need to buy a cable to connect the hard drive, and you'll need some thermal paste for the heat sink if it doesn't come with some. I like ceramic. It's usually not more than a degree warmer than metal and won't short stuff if you screw up. I think you goofed getting only one terabyte. It fills fast.

Why is google captcha getting steadily more obnoxious and what can I do about it? "Select all squares..." was annoying enough but now theres a ton of "Click verify..." which is even slower. And every so often it just says "Fuck you. Do it again."

>>
>>54636771
SLI isn't worth it unless you're already using the highest end card available, unless you somehow get a second card for free.

You don't see linear performance gains, many games don't even support it, you have to get a more expensive PSU, and you get a bigger power bill.

The problem is that this increases latency and can cause noticeable input lag.
Newer monitors often support variable refresh rates so you get the anti-tearing effect of vsync without the latency.

Thank you for this thread. I have a question that might seem stupid for the average /g/ veteran:

Okay, so I have family who use computers. I don't want them using windows 10 because it constantly screws up their files. My mother's laptop installed it without her permission and a bunch of drivers got screwed up because of it. Imagine my surprise going over to her place and finding her computer missing important files left and right.

Regardless, is there a way to check if Windows 10 is installed on a computer? I know the UI differences between the two, but I feel like W10 is a ticking time bomb that'll install itself if it has the files on your computer. Is there a place i can check for these files? Can I delet them if they're there? What can I do to avoid Downloading W10 if it isn't? I know you're supposed to disable automatic update, but I'm worried that I'll miss an actually important update for security and all that.

I wish I could install gentoo or linux, but my entire family (including myself) are computer illiterate. So it can't be helped.

>Are you referring to compatibility issue with certain programs?
Specifically, alot of games don't run properly on it. Also, a big issue is that a major driver wasn't installed with Windows 10, in particular it was the "quick bar" driver. So she can't use the task bar at the bottom of the desktop, or click on any icons from it. She couldn't have deleted it, because she's been using her computer for 4 years, and I've regularly done maintenance on it. I've had to reboot it once, and install antiviruses and scan for malware,but she's never had that happen to her. it's not a file you can accidentally delete, right? Even if you're completely computer illiterate, the partitions you have to bring up and the specific actions to not only locate the driver, but delete it as well, would be too complicated for the average person.

As to the other thing you said, I just want the option to stay on Windows 8.1. Even if Windows 10 is better, my experience has told me that you never upgrade to the newer windows until at least a few years have passed. Not only do I do it for compatibility issues, but I also don't trust Microsoft to make competent hardware OR software. I fell pray for the Xbox 360, which was garbage, and I'm not slipping on that banana peel again.

For premiere pro video encoding and gaming at the highest settings on cpu-demanding games, will a i5 6600k be as good as a i7 4770k ? Which one should I get ?

One is more "future-proof" and the other has hyperthreading !

Okay, so after all these years of having my site hosted with Jewgle Sites, I decided to start hosting my own site which I've been totally rewriting in HTML. Started learning today.

I *expected* HTML and CSS to be markup-language not unlike my experience with LaTeX, but there are some basic things, I can't figure out how to do even after searching (probably still obvious).

For example, is there a way to write the code for a menu bar for every page on my site independently in a different file, then call the file on each page? I can do it in each page independent, but that's a huge waste.

Please tell me that there's a way to do this. I'd hate to have to go change every file when I have to add a menu item or something.

It keeps your computer on if the power goes out at all, so you don't lose your work if a lightning strike makes dip for a couple hundred milliseconds, and you have time to save and shut down if the power goes off. They also tend to protect from some kinds of fluctuations way better than plain surge protectors do.

I recently had a storm cause a brief dip that reset everything not on the UPS, and I didn't notice until the next day because it kept everything in my office running smoothly.

I have a C++ question.

I have a function something like
template <typename T>
int foo(T *__restrict x, T*__restrict y){...}

I give it a C wrapper:
int foo_int(int *__restrict x, int *__restrict y){
return foo<int>(x, y);
}

Naturally I pass two int*'s into foo_int. But for some insane reason, T gets interpreted as double. Even more confusingly, if I add

printf("%d\n", x[0]);
std::cout << typeid(x).name() << '\n';

to foo, the printf statement generates a warning about T being interpreted as double, but the typeid shows Pi.

What the hell?

If you game go for something with G-sync/Freesync and a refresh rate at or over 120hz.

Because you are creating an object of an inherited class. A better example might be chess pieces: You have a bunch of known chess pieces that are inherited classes of your super-class (ChessPieces). So to make a knight, you might call ChessPieces newKnight = new knight(). A knight will have associated with it a different move method and graphic attribute compared to other 'pieces' (i.e. classes that are derived ChessPieces).

Don't listen to people saying "muuh you learn how things works etc."
It's mostly bullshit.

We use linux because it fucking works unlike windows. It doesn't take hours to make an update, Everything is always up to date, there is the tools I want, that aren't bloated, that are free as in freedom and that won't install me bloatware and adware on my system. I don't spend hours to update my drivers and I don't give a fuck about viruses. My computer is fast and will be fast for years unlike a bloated windows system. It can boot in a few seconds and shutdown as fast. When I use various programs as the same time they will always be responding, they won't "stopped working" and I won't have to kill them. When I got a fucking issue with it I can actually fix it. More than this. I KNOW that i can fix it. While with windows I don't even try and just hope it won't happen again (even if it will).

Linux was and still is in advance in many things. It have a lot of features that windows still don't have (simple example is the window focus, alt+click, shortkey to resize and move the window...)

tl;dr : Linux just werks unlike windows.

You can argue with it of course. Linux still have a lot of issues, but you can't compare it with the cluster fucker that windows is.

I've got a 4chan related question, I myself don't have the problem but I am stumped. My friend from Ireland posts on /int/ a lot, but about 2 months ago his flag changed from Ireland to UK. I figured he was issued an IP that belongs to a UK IP block, however every other single website identifies his location as Ireland. 4chan is the only website that assigns him a UK flag.

I've tried almost everything to get it fixed, but at this point I'm thinking it's 4chan's issue and not his. Is there anyone here that had the same problem?

lazy to post on /wsr/. Have you tried installing gentoo ?

Actually that's a legit question. Have you tried to run a linux distribution, even a live distro to try if your hardware works properly.
You can download ubuntu, put it on a CD or USB stick and run a live verison of it without installing anything on your hard drive.
Then you'll be able to use firefox, access the content of your HDD. Use it a few hours and see if you get the same issues.
If you do, it might be your hardware
if you don't, windows is shitting on you and I don't see what you can do to fix that.

I have a computer running windows vista that after few years of use didn't want to recognize my mice and most of my keyboards. I installed debian on it and it everything was fine on it.

One of my fans is extremely loud whenever I make my computer do anything intensive. This fan kicks it up to 5200 rpm . So I built my sister a computer and used modest hardware. Specifically, the motherboard is fine in terms of quality of caps and VRMS and such, but it only has DVI and VGA outputs for the iGPU.

The computer only has an iGPU. And I need to connect this computer to a TV now.

I know that in some instances a DVI to HDMI adapter DOES send the sound data over the correct pins on the cable. However, I'm not sure if this'll work on an iGPU, and I really don't feel like wasting time and money on a cable to only have it not work.

Google isn't helping me out here, so I come to ask my fellow /g/entoomen. If anyone is currently running an HDMI signal through the DVI out of their MOTHERBOARD (Mine's a GA-B75-D3V + i3 2120), or would be so very kind as to quickly check if it works and could tell me, I'd very much appreciate it.

I have an Xbox One controller that I've taken the plastic plates off; reason being that the right side bumper doesn't work, It clicks but sends no input unless pushed super hard and then only some times.
The lever at the end of the bumper is intact and pressing the tiny button and like I said the button clicks, but pushing the tiny button with a knife yeilds the same as the bumper: click with input on hard presses only.
Do I need a new button or is there something else I can do? Let me know if this is better suited for /diy/.
>>
>>54644517
More than likely there is a break in the solder of the switch for the bumper. You could fix it yourself, but if you aren't comfortable with doing that, I would recommend just getting a new controller

>>
>>54644670
That, my friend, is fucking deep.

>not guy you responded to.

But, what... IS pain, anyway? It's so subjective... It's just subjective unpleasantness, isn't it?
>>
>>54644628
That depends. Pain is a useful thing in the real world, it can warn us of immediate danger or harm and cause us to react much faster than we otherwise would have, also works to quickly train us to avoid things that we have no business doing (a kid might try to touch a hot stove once, they probably won't do it twice)

If the computer was in an analogous situation where its own physical safety and integrity was threatened by an external stimulus, then maybe a pain response might be appropriate. For this to even work though it would need to already have some degree of, if not intelligence then at least autonomy. A computer like we use today feeling "pain" would be like a rock feeling pain, it wouldn't accomplish anything and isn't really even possible in a strict definition of the word.
>>
>>54644685
All anguish (apart from physical pain) stems from being an entity that's aware of itself and aware of the fact that it is separate from the world and everything in it. Knowing that reality goes on with or without you, you're separate, irrelevant, alone.
