Welcome to /fglt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.
There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:
0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux
Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.
Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

No restart patching is irrelevant for users. It won't work between kernel releases, it's literally only designed for applying critical security fixes for production machines that people would rather not experience downtime with.
>>54569117
>no restart patching?
I believe you fell for a meme.
Restarting is advised for applying updates because it's the most foolproof and reliable way to ensure every service was restarted properly.
Restartless patching is a chore (or at least back when i was using rh) since you have to restart every service manually.
How long does it take to restart? 5 seconds for a shutdown and 25 seconds for cold boot?
>>54569003
That worked, thanks friend.
>>54569329

This is correct though. It's a little annoying that GNOME currently makes you restart for every update, but ultimately it's race-free and the Right Thing. When sandboxed apps appear you'll be able to update those live though.
>>54569435
You only need to reboot if you updated your kernel or changed libc

Not now that we have systemd, which unlike initscripts can actually guarantee services get killed.

Solus >>> Arch
Hey /g/ so I'm using arch and earlier I did pacman -Syyu and did a system update. After I restarted simple display manager wasn't loading, so I booted from my installation USB, mounted my partitions, and went into chroot to try to figure out the problem. After looking through the wiki I decided to do another mkinitcpio to see if that would help, and it returned this:# mkinitcpio -p linux
==> Building image from preset: /etc/mkinitcpio.d/linux.preset: 'default'
-> -k /boot/vmlinuz-linux -c /etc/mkinitcpio.conf -g /boot/initramfs-linux.img
==> ERROR: 'lib/modules/4.5.1-1-ARCH' is not a valid kernel module directory
==> Building image from preset: /etc/mkinitcpio.d/linux.preset: 'fallback'
-> -k /boot/vmlinuz-linux -c /etc/mkinitcpio.conf -g /boot/initramfs-linux-fallback.img -S autodetect
==> ERROR: 'lib/modules/4.5.1-1-ARCH' is not a valid kernel module directory
So after looking through some forums, someone recommended I check my versions, and I got two different versions (I couldn't figure out how to word this):# pacman -Q linux && uname -r

Has anyone managed to find the linux version for SanDisk SSD Dashboard?
They mention that they added a GUI for linux a few versions back in the changelog but all I can find are .exe files.
I'm trying to install Kubuntu 16.04 alongside my Windows 8.1 ony my Acer laptop, but every time i try to start the Kubuntu i end up with grub rescue. What do ?
How 'clean' is ubuntu when it comes to installing and deleting lots of packages? How much stuff gets left over?
Barebones Debian or Antergos for the AUR. For comfy tinkering?
>>54576114
What functionality do you need exactly?
>>54576312
So you can't boot into anything? Is secure boot disabled?

If you purge and exclusively use aptitude its pretty clean.

>>54576364

Debian
>>54564996
So I just installed Arch, and besides from me not knowing what I was doing and it taking around a day, everything went fine.
Anyway, I tried booting several times with systemd, but I got an error message like <device ' ' not found>, which I took to mean that it could find the loader.conf and all that, but coulnd't read the acutal .conf file under entries, no matter what UUID or PARTUUID is entered - I should at least have gotten something like device 'UUID<whatever>' not found.
Anyway, rEFInd worked without problems, which is what I'm using now, but it's pretty fucking ugly desu, I much prefered the non-GUI setup. So does anyone know why systemd didn't work? Did I place the .img files in the wrong directory (/boot), is it just a shitty service, what's the deal?
is Alternate_ISO on lubuntu faster than the original one?
>>54576759
you can read all about the alternate iso on the official download site:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/GetLubuntu
alternatively, if your question isn't answered there, you can tell us a bit more explicitly what you want to know, namely: faster in what way exactly? To install? To download?
>>54576828
It installs the same things as original ? Does the alternate make my laptop faster? It has 500mb RAM.
>>54576857
you didn't read what it says in that link, did you? It says right there what the alternative install is.
>>54576857
yes, it installs the same things as the original iso. No it won't be faster. 500mb should be enough (for both original and alternative)
the only difference is that the alternative iso has no live environment and starts right with the installer

Why is *buntu the only distro that cares about good font rendering out of the box?
>>54577184
because people tend to like different things and configuring it yourself is not hard.

there are people who prefer the "worse" font rendering that relies entirely on free software, so it's really a matter of preference.
Ubuntu just tries to appeal to windows users, which is either really good (in, maybe, your opinion) or really bad (in my opinion)

I really tried using Gnu/Linux for a week, deleted Win moved everything to Linux. But it sucked on some aspects.
Is there any distro that gets everything done from the beginning.
•Ubuntu
Silly buggs, when my PC turns itself off when not in use I can't boot it up again unless I completely shut it down.
WiFi problems
Some other hardware problems that I fixed
•Xubutnu
Does not have some bugs like on Ubuntu, but XFCE had some fucked up GUI bugs that pissed the hell of me.
Wifi problems
•OpenSuse
Can't run it because laptop is slow
What pissed me the most was not being able to create .iso images easy like on windows. I downloaded UNetbootin and it sucked, couldn't even write one .iso image with it it just creates error. ( had to use the dd command for everything)
Some bugs with programs that I use on Windows that have a Gnu/Linux version, the program was KeePass, it wouldn't even show the numbers in the correct field but would move them out of the field and you could type them but not see them.
Problems with opening Office documents, I really didn't expect this to work correctly so wasn't disappointed.
Tried running a virtual machine with Windows so I can be productive but I would just wish to have everything there on Linux.
I had a lot of problems. I just wanted to do something with my computer but I was even more pissed then I was on Windows.
I really want to use it but I don't know anymore.

>>54578710
Is there any linux software on modern gnu systems that cannot easily be replaced by an actively developed alternative? I can't think of anything.
>>54578702
That actually does make it an OS. Software is either divided into OS or application software. OS software is software that is directly related to manage or configure the system behind the application software. That list of software is filled with OS software and is a complete OS even without the application software.
>>54578702
Stallman is asking for GNU credit on a computer system that is fundamentally a GNU system. If your system doesn't make use of GNU software, then it's obviously not a GNU/Linux system. Android systems are examples of systems that use the Linux program and it doesn't include GNU. Android systems are not GNU/Linux systems.
>>54578710
No there isn't. By it's design, GNU software is intentionally easy to replace. This is because the GNU system is modelled after the Unix system and this system was intentionally designed so that it's not difficult to replace any part you need.
The important part of the GNU/Linux name is that the computer running such a system is fundamentally reliant upon GNU as its fundamental OS platform. It is very possible to have a computer that runs Linux that does not use any GNU software, such a system is not a GNU/Linux system and it's misleading to label it as such.

>>54579215
I don't really have time to set it up twice. I just need to know what software I need for the wifi to work. If I fuck up, I can always chroot inside through SystemRescueCD,
>>54579185
