but since its buntu im not sure if you will gain anything else than the flexibility openbox gives you which might be not what you want at the moment

you may be able to lower the ram usage of xubuntu a bit by removing or disabling something
initially its close to 300mb

in any case a pc with 1gb ram and 1,5ghz+ cpu is totaly usable
