Stupid Questions Thread
ask, but do not assume an answer

Please, somebody.

So I started up my laptop today and the cpu fan revs up a bit then stops and repeatedly does this at increments. I cleaned it out and noticed that it doesn't seem to spin as much as it used to, I couldn't find anything obstructing it, so is it pretty much dead? I've had it for about ~4 or 5 years now.

I switched from a headset to headphones+desk mic today and it's been all around great, but I very much miss the pass through I had with my headset.

Is there any way to get microphone passthrough with a Blue Snowball that has zero latency? The built-in Windows "listen to my device" shit has a half second or so of delay which makes it impossible to talk.

I've added a couple of search bars to my custom browser startpage by inspecting the search bar in Firefox and appending the action to the site address in my startpage. How can I do this on a website where the page adress ends with "html", like this: http://dict.leo.org/ende/index_de.html
>>
>>54298081
i was asking you...
but yeah you need lube on anything the moves against another surface. google: friction

but it may also be that your software/firmware isn't giving the right instructions

or it may be that there's a short somewhere on your main board...

no one can really call it not being there hands-on, but these are things for YOU or your local pc repair tech to look into

what is the /g/ way to free up some ram in weendows?also battery life
>yes I cleared up startup
>yes I close unused apps

>>
>>54298148
well yeah you have a locked cpu so getting a z chipset is indeed completely pointless
most mobos have very similar feature sets especially ones that are not super high end ricer shit, so basically all you're going to do is find the cheapest compatible one that isn't from a trash brand like biostar or whatever
>>
>>54298148

that being said, get what is compatible and fits your need and budget.

Sorry, guess I didn't make it clear enough, I've taken the fan out, and when I rotate the blades with my finger, it doesn't spin as much as it used to. So that rules out the software/firmware issue. Upon further inspection I think it may be the lack of lubricant like you said, so I'll give that a try. Thanks for the help mate.

Hey /sqt/, I need to connect a 5.25 inch floppy drive to a somewhat modern computer because I want to create some boot and software disks for a IBM 5150 I have. The problem that I have run into is that the only computer that I have that has a floppy controller port seems to only support 3.5 inch floppy drives, as that is the only option that appears in the bios (I have also tried this option, but the computer powers the drive as if it was a 3.5 inch drive and doesn't recognize my floppies). Is there any way I can make the computer recognize the 5.25 drive, or am I shit out of luck?

learn a trade that cant be sent to pajeet, go be a plumbers apprentice or some shit, unless you're going to be an actual computer engineer its a field of misery. you'll work wothless jobs, move up to more worthless jobs and in 30 years you'll put a bullet through your head.

pick a goddamn trade, learn a skill, get dirty and make some money, then in 30 years when you're broken and tired you can do computer bullshit for shits and giggles as a pensioner.

I should add that the battery is dead so it needs to stay plugged in, doesn't seem like a good idea for me to have the power cable in there with it. I was planning on moving the files to a portable hard drive, but the remote desktop option sounds like a better idea.

>>
>>54300324
There is no such thing. You have a fundamental misunderstanding of the internet. Think of it this way, your speed will be limited to whatever the slowest connection you are using is. This is known as bottlenecking. The VPN you use can support insanely high speeds, but you cannot capitalize on this unless the weakest connection in this chain is of the same quality. The weakest connection in this scenario is the country's bad internet. As long as you are dependent on that internet it is your bottleneck.

If I want to buy a CPU now that I can stay on for 5 years (like the 2600K), should I get the 6700K or 5820K? Primarily for gaming and general word processing shit. I'd only overclock at the tail end to extend duration of use/performance.

>>54300407
I don't understand how a seedbox can help anyone then. The uploading speed on my country is atrocious, like 50Kbps tops. If I had a seedbox, as I understand, I would be able to upload at a much better speed (1Mbps?), even with country's Internet infrastructure limiting it...
>>
>>54300456
>What is the difference between a quadcore @ Ghz 2.33 and a dualcore at 3.16 Ghz?
IPC. If it's the same family then the 2.33x4 will be quicker at most tasks (dependent on software optimisation).

>What is the difference between a Gtx 650, and a Gtx 650ti with PCIe and Mini HDMI?
The Ti is a faster version. The other stuff is the connector you plug your cable into. Match that to the output on your monitor.

Did you meant to state:
>those examples you see of people uploading at 1Mbps are from people living in places were Internet is fast and doesn't limited the seedbox
Then why the fuck get them? Just for the sake of anonymity when downloading? If you can upload at 1Mbps, why buy a product that lets you upload at 10Mbps? It's good enough already.

>where could a faster connection possibly be coming from?
I don't know, that's why I'm asking all of this.

/g/, where the fuck can I find a reasonable Norwegian layout keyboard? Do you have any recommendations, specific or general?
>>
>>54300623
TF2 is all good

Skyrim can be very GPU intensive, especially with mods (lots of detail for your GPU to render and output to your monitor)

Civ V and Tropico are both CPU intensive games (lots of objects for your CPU to keep track of as they move around the map)

You've picked a real smorgasbord to work around. Confirm your budget, and then check out logical increments and compare against the suggested specs for the games you want to play.

Doing a Software Engineering assignment:

Submodule printShortestPath
Imports: databaseName (string), origin (string), destination (string)
Exports: nothing
Calculates and outputs a string representing the quickest way (i.e. the small- est sequence of bus routes) for getting from [origin] to [destination].
If there there are two or more different paths that are equally short, one of them is chosen randomly.
There are at least two other important special cases.

Anyone have any ideas on what the other two important special cases are?

-Would it maybe be something like [origin] and [destination] match, meaning they are the same?
-Maybe something like [origin] and [destination] are empty, therefore can't give a proper answer?
But I'd assume that the module this module receives it's information from has already checked for valid input, meaning it would be impossible to get matching origin/destinations or empty origin/destinations. Is there some obvious logic I'm missing similar to what is said in the description of the module ("origin/destination have two equal ways of getting there, one is chosen at random").

Just for some extra context it's a submodule made for a hypothetical bus service system.

So source is a CPU bound game, You can get away with a cheap GPU(mid-ish range from the past 2 gens should be good until Source2)

You will want Intel(before some AMD shill comes along) due to single thread performance.

I have a 6500 and get 300+ FPS on max. You can go older and go 2x00 series but the more you go back the higher tier CPU you will need(ex 6500 vs 2700).

I can't say anything about performance but the more expensive mobos may come with more PCIE slots, fan headers, protective guard that covers the guts, and maybe better BIOS boot options.

My laptop decided to crap itself and since then it had a few bad sectors. That was a year ago and I've pulled all my important stuff into a new computer. One of the corrupt files relates to Windows Update. I've disabled Windows Update for a year since svchost was eating up my CPU since it cannot update automatically. Error code is 0x80070490. Apparently I cannot fix it without a DVD but when I bought my laptop it did not have it.

Should I bother fixing it? Is there even a way to fix it? If I can't fix it should I just completely disable Windows Update and let my laptop have security holes even if I scan for viruses regularly? Or should I just download and install updates manually in the microsoft website?
This is an old laptop and I only use it to play games.

Alright, I'm also getting a 2 TB HDD to go along with this, should I put a separate home partition in the larger HDD, or keep it in the SSD? I know that I should put things that should be read often, like the OS, into the SSD.

Also, what do I do with two-point-fucking-five TB of storage? All my patrician-tier FLAC albums? All the 10bit 1080p chinese cartoons that I want? Doom .WADs? I don't think that I've thought this through.
>>
>>54303047
>bad sectors
Consider replacing the HDD. Bad sectors usually mean the drive is dying. As a laptop it will take a 2.5" one.

As for installation media, you used to be able to download Win7 isos from Microsoft, but they seem to have pulled this since Win10 was released and is a free upgrade. The best recommendation I can give is to obtain a win7 iso another way and either burn it to DVD or use Rufus to transfer it to a USB stick you can then use the same way.

Or of course take the Win10 bait. It's a free upgrade, and once you're upgraded you can create an installer USB stick by downloading the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft. That will let you install it onto a new HDD that doesn't have bad sectors, and it will still take your old Win7 key and be activated.
>>
>>54303019
>Connecting the TV back to my router is not an option.
Why not? If your cable isn't long enough, get a longer one.

>Can I connect an ethernet cable directly from my PC to my TV to get internet on my TV?
Does your PC had 2 ethernet ports? If yes, then you can do it through Windows Internet Connection Sharing -- right click the adapter that's connected to the router, properties, sharing tab, share it with the other one. You can even share to a wifi adapter like this. For Linux, look up "iptables NAT".

If no, then you can't since there's nowhere to plug the second wire into the PC.
>>
>>54303157
>Does your PC had 2 ethernet ports? If yes, then you can do it through Windows Internet Connection Sharing
Yep, was just worried that the TV wouldn't be able to join the network without the router directly giving it an IP address and such.

Will I need a crossover cable?
>>
>>54303178
>Will I need a crossover cable?
Nope. Either sort of ethernet cable will do either job these days. It used to need a crossover one, but network adapters now auto detect and cross over inside themselves as needed.

>Yep, was just worried that the TV wouldn't be able to join the network without the router directly giving it an IP address and such.
Windows will hand it an IP and act as another router between your router and the TV. It won't be on the same subnet as your router, so it might not work with other devices on your network. It will however have internet.

Another option is to buy a cheap ethernet switch and use that to connect cables together: first cable goes from the router to the switch. Then run a short one from the switch to the PC. Then a 3rd from the switch to the TV. That will put all of them on the same subnet, and the TV will continue to work even if the PC is off. -- Note though that if your router's ethernet ports are gigabit, you should get a gigabit switch if you want full performance; if they aren't, a gigabit switch would add nothing over a cheaper 100 mbit one in your current network.

I already transferred everything that's important so if it does die I don't really lose anything except a laptop but I like using it since I can be comfy in my bed. It already lasted a year without other bad sectors popping up too but I'm sure it'll die this year.

No. Most bearings in these things do not use lube. They use specific materials and tight tolerances to achieve the same results.

But the bearing is worn out. By the point you notice it misbehaving, it's already reamed itself out and is shot. You can lube it, which might let it work a little longer, but you're just delaying the inevitable.

I'm planning on buying a couple of SSDs and making a new Windows install and starting a Linux one, but I'll hold off another month or two and upgrade my motherboard too if that's being weird.

Or you just have a shitty charger or weak connection, I have experienced this.. another thing to consider is defective battery cells not holding charge correctly.

Use css, that way you can also make modifications down the road without much effort.
Unless you really trash it up with tons of external css libraries and js files it is insignificant to the server.

Deluge doesn't download torrents normally. Usually the download would start like 5-10 seconds after adding the torrent and it would go normally, but I bought this laptop, did a clean install and shit and after adding the torrent to deluge it doesn't start downloading. Sometimes something manages to jumpstart the download, but I haven't pinpointed the thing, like sometimes after restarting the laptop, I can see that the download starts, not always though
Tried different torrent sites too

what do you need?
buy a motherboard that's in your price range with the chipset/features you want.

It's a Maximus Hero VI, so lga.

well it does not work out of the box
it goes to other boards it seems as it is creating directory structure

£100 or so

there's no "better"
answer the question, what do you need? what socket, what chipset, what plugs and extras etc.

It would need those

>>
>>54305922
775 cpus don't support pcie 3, you need an ivy bridge cpu or newer.

for 1151 pick any.

for 225€ you have brand new PC man, not some slow 5 year old shit

25€ - case
25€ - psu
50€ - gigabyte mobo
70€ - cpu G3258 or A8-7600K
15€ - 4GB ram
40€ - 120GB SSD

What is the cheapest shittiest build that i can get to play Fallout 4 that can be slowly upgraded to a near godly machine?
>>
>>54306324
It hardly works like that
reuse as much as possible from what you have, the most important thing would be getting new GPU that could run fallout4 and to make that GPU compatible(PSU and whatnot)
>>
>>54306350
I have literally nothing. Maybe a hard drive from my old dell slim tower. I just want a cheap build that can limp by for the next 2 years or so.

i3 is generally far better performance wise
but not when they are several years older than competition

and you should reconsider, yo are on fucking /g/ and it seems to be for you...
I recently build few PCs using eurocase MC X203, really recommend
its incredibly cheap, small, but sturdier than one would expect for that price
and it even came with usb3 front cable if your mobo has it.

since you eurotrash too, you might have it in shops

what is the best language to start on and how to learn it?
>>
>>54306364
If you build a pile of shit and then try to gradually upgrade it, you will waste tons of time and probably even money, while still getting shit, just because for half of PC, you either upgrade some part with huge restrictions(New CPU has to fit in the old socket) or you change 2-3 parts when you upgrade(new CPU, new MOBO, new RAM(if going from old to newest), new PSU)
Since you're posting here, I assume you have a laptop or something, if you really plan on "building a godly machine", you should just start buying main parts step by step, like buying a new GPU without having the rest of PC would be terribly stupid and you would lose tons of money, but buying a PC case that will last you a lifetime would be a nice start(R4, R5)
Also, use logical increments

Does anyone have any idea what might cause periodic lag in Half-Life 1 (goldsrc) based multiplayer games?

Every 30 seconds or so in multiplayer my walking stutters for a 0.5-1 second. Everyone around me moves lag free, I can hear voice without distortions, but my own movement is laggy for a bit.

It's not my video card, it doesn't happen in other games (Quake Live, TF2) so I assume my internet connection is fine. Win7, Radeon HD7750, 8GB RAM, Intel Q6600

Guys, I opened up a friend's laptop and I need some help. It's an acer, and it's a bit old.. The thing is... After I cleaned it, I'm having trouble connecting the keyboard and mousepad's flat cables. Apparently the person who messed around with this laptop before me fucked up the cables and the only way they got it to work was using duct tape to make the cables stable and well connected.

My friend needs her laptop back today, and I'm having trouble connecting this shitty cables. Anyone have any tips?

Well, still, you could spend money on a good case, HDD or SSD(since you don't game, a 256gb SSD would probably be enough for most of your needs), CPU fans and in general fans
Good case and fans would keep everything nice and cool, if you care more about having something nice and aesthetic over some money

ssd = OS and programs, games (and if you do any editing, the files you are editing at the time - keep a separate folder for these)
hdd = music, movies, porn, documents you are saving for later, etc... (keep a large section for the ssd back up)
would be smart to have an external drive or NAS to backup everything
