Is Discord a spyware/botnet?
>>
>>54299896
Yes
>>
>>54299896
Of course, everything is centralized on their servers.

/thread.
>>
No. But it's a piece of proprietary bullshit.
They're forcing it down the gaymen community's collective throat. They need to fucking stop.

>the shitty & stale memes they use
>"LEEROY JENKINS"
>the wumpus
>"summoning unnecessarily dramatic encounters"

it's a cancer company, cancer software.

Yes, no meme its an actual botnet
>>

You mean it's MADE by indie/hipster faggots?
Yes, it is.

Listen to their ads, they use some faggot's voice and he puts on the dumbest sarcastic wording ever.
>>
How does discord make money?
>>
>>54300093
They're going to sell emoticons and shit.
Basically, they're broke.
>>
This is sounding like discord is Line from America
>>
Anyone wanna make a /g/ discord?
>>
>>54300060
link?

idk, senpai.
discord is lightweight and more functional than skype, vent, TS3... multiplatform.

i wonder how they make money or why the give it away for free. maybe NSA shell?
>>
By /g/'s standards, yes
But then again, by /g/'s standards even notepad is a botnet

This.. And their software is even buggier than line's
>>
>>54300142
Undoubtedly better and more lightweight than those clients, of course.

The problem is, their company and client and target audience are so fucking cringy and cancerous that a lot of people (including me) really find it hard to use, for that sole purpose.

If you can get around the fact that the client is littered with old gaymer memes and shitty, stale references, then you're fine.

>>54300175
If they have nothing to hide, they have nothing to lose by releasing it as free software.

>>
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Wave_Federation_Protocol
Besides group voice channels the Wave protocol already achieves more than what discord and other modern group mobile IMs like whatsapp and snapchat does. Builing an open sourced group chat which can run on web browsers that you can privately host while maintaining the ability to communicate with other wave servers with wave.
>>
>>54299896
I mean really think about it
I've used Discord since October with my guild and it's perfectly fine, Everything runs well despite the rocky start, how the fuck do they have the funds to maintain this? They even upgraded their servers several times. There's no ads at all

I know they have some iPhone/Android games but surely that's not enough money to handle this.

They have to be selling information or something. I have no idea.

>>
I love how legitimate issues with Discord, when brought up to their support staff, boils down to "lol it's not our fault check ur hardware".

Sorry that my friend has a professional headset using XLR to USB and Discord is too shit to utilize it. Fix your damn app.

>>
I don't know of its a botnet but it's fucking cancer. I can't play an online game without some faggot spamming their discord channel in chat. Can't even browse /vg/ anymore since every general wants a discord channel now instead of actually using its general.

Pic related, also it gathers data from you with it's bugsnag program which you are not made aware of nor have an option to turn off normally.

I've been on it for a few months now, only because basically everyone I know was hyping it to be the best thing ever and it makes voip "easy", even though it's never been difficult.

I would love to not use it or even have it, but sadly there are just far too many people I know on it. And I hate being "that guy" who tries to get everyone to switch to something else.

I've owned and operated a Ventrilo server for the last few years for a few friends and have found it way better than Discord, sure it doesn't have as many fancy features and a pretty gui, but it's a fucking voice client. Not sure why people need all this shit.

How does it even still operate? It's too good to be true. There has to be some sketchy shit going on behind the scenes there.

tl;dr it's shit and should be avoided like the plague
>>
The Linux client is dildos. I have no idea why most of my buddies have started using this garbage.
>>
>>54300093
You are the product.
>>
>>54299896
Yes. Take a look at their privacy policy. Plus, this: >>54299907
They've claimed many times they won't sell your data, but... ;^)

That said, apart from >>54299926 (I really do wish they'd stop with the le GAYMUR memes), it's a shitload better than Skype, and it seems to be the only thing normies are willing to switch to. So, unless you can somehow convince your friends (>implying) to switch to Jitsi (lol) or Tox (LOL) or some shit, you might as well just embrace the next botnet.
>>
>>54299896

doesn't matter. it has a 'pretty' ui. all the casuals will use it.
>>
>>54307789
>Jitsi
Is it actually any good? Has any good software of this kind ever existed?
>>
I use it. I don't give a fuck if it's botnet. It's fantastic software.

I can't get these niggers off skype, steam, battlenet, facebook or google. Ofc discord is adding to the problem. But it lets you make multiple rooms, it has voice chat. You can leave messages, post pictures/videos into the chat.

More people should be using it.
>>
>>54307827
>Is it actually any good?
I haven't really been able to use it much, given that none of my friends were even willing to give it a minute of their attention. That said, apart from supporting a bunch of different communication protocols (so you can talk to a bunch of people on clients nobody uses anymore!), it doesn't really offer anything over Skype (in the views of normies, anyway), which means that nobody uses it, which means that nobody will switch to it, and so on and so forth...meanwhile, they're all slobbering at the mouth to switch to Discordâ„¢

>Has any good software of this kind ever existed?
Not really.
>>
>>54302737
Hardly.
>>
Discord raped my TeamSpeak community and now none of the major names use ts. Id use both but if I don't mute discord then the fucking tts starts going for every channel I turned it off but it still happens so I can't really use the voice without wanting to eat bleach tablets
Only thing about discord I really like is the gif and general image support it has over ts my fucking question is do they store the pictures themselves and of so how do they manage and pay for the literal terabytes of porn my community has uploaded to the NSFW channel
>>
One of the main Discord devs is from /g/.

Why? You always have a browser window open anyways.
>>
>>54310363

>>
