In last thread I mentioned that now I listen to orchestra OST music as TSFH and Audiomachine. I want high clarity and open-back headphones that can deliver it on low volume and not produce sound right near the ears. Angled drivers are plus. With everything I read on the internet, HD800 is my best bet, but again, with all those codewords of audiphyles language I can't be sure by 100%. Wish I had a friend with pricey headphones so I could see how big gap in sound quality between 100 and 1000 $ headphones

Better go to doctor anon or you could end up with wax plug. For everyday care, use cotton swab. If you never cleared your ears with cotton swabs NOTE. Procceed very slowly to not pinch, or worse, break your eardrum. You even can take it closer to the end. You can wet them slightly (but wipe with dry after it, to not left any moister inside) or clear your ears after every shower.

Wash out ears with soap to remove oils and particulate.
Apply hydrogen peroxide to ear for several minutes to loosen and dissolve. The peroxide should bubble quickly. Gently rinse out peroxide and cerumen residue after.

>Why are the high-res Sony Walkmans, and other "high-res" players so expensive?
Because they can. Because the high price makes them more attractive to a certain type of clientele.
>Are the onboard amplifiers and DACs that good?
In a word: no. Modern phones have capable enough D/A circiutry in general, but amplification sections may be a bit low in maximum output.
Most, if not all, dedicated players are marred by inability to be used directly into a headphone load, or by dreadful UI, or a lack of controls and PEQ. The AK players and the Sony ZX2 are not better or even worse than some of the "audiophile" smartphones.

>>54074929
>Because the high price makes them more attractive to a certain type of clientele.

What does everyone use for reference recordings? I don't mean best songs, but the songs that show the advantages and limitations of the headphone.

E.g., I am testing akg 812's and cannot find anything wrong with them. No sibilance, boomy bass, etc. But according to every review, they suck.

I want a recording that I can listen to a certain passage and determine if the headphones have any deficiencies.

I came across my old Philips HE591's today, and used them while I worked out and watched counter strike matches. The quality is pretty bad for music, which is kind of nice because it's just bad enough to muffle out all of the tongue-clicking and lip licking shit that the commentators can't seem to not do, and also offer significant enough lows for the gunshots to sound intense. What I'm saying is, if I already have an amp, do I still need the headphone amp?
Also, I was wondering if the preamp in the uber is a factor in the price. Is the preamp good enough to justify the price tag over the magni2 or is it wiser to just get the 2?

Any thoughts on Audeze? Was thinking about selling my 400i's and gunning for the LCD-X. It''ll take a while but hopefully it's a worthwhile upgrade.
>>
>>54079241

>>
>>54079241
Try Sine, Cheaper and better.
>>
>>54079241
>Any thoughts on Audeze?
Uninspiring and not inviting of confidence. LCD-X hasn't had major quality control issues unlike the rest of the line up. Why do you want to ditch the 400i and why the LCD-X?

>>54077896
What about the Shure in particular would you pick it for? There are many other dark-ish option to choose from, K10, TG334, IM04, most Westones, the list goes on and on.
>>
>>54079341
To be frank I'm a little bit let down by the 400i's. I don't find them exciting and it wouldn't hurt to have some color. I hear the X is rather neutral with a wider sound stage in tandem with a more exciting signature. I guess the added bass is a bonus. I have considered the 800's but I feel that's headed towards the other direction in terms of what I want.
>>
>>54079424
Ether could be a possibility?
>>
>>54079241
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

I guess if you want to do it. It's a company that tends to cover up all their faults by placing the blame on the user. Poor quality control coupled with a uninviting sound signature. Audeze seems to tune all their headphones all the same with a significant drop at 4khz to 8khz which they refuse to address even on their 4,000 dollar flagship. They all sound the same. With all the technological 'improvements' like fazors and sub micron diaphragms they can't even get them to have better imaging or soundstage. They sound hazy because of the significant drop off in the highs. You'll essentially be getting a itty bitty leg up on the 400i. Get something else like the HD800S which are actually worth the money.
>>
>>54079553
Thanks for the input. I've heard that the the 800s are a tad more forgiving than the original so that's great. A guess the biggest plus is that the form and weight factor is a lot better as well.
>>
>>54079424
>have some color. I hear th
Hey mate, the lcd Xs are even more neutral and unexciting and with even less highs. You're heading towards more disappointment. At least the 400i weren't such a huge waste of money and are far lighter and more comfortable than the clunky lcd x.
>>
>>54079553
About how much of an improvement are the 800s over the original?
>>
>>54079577
Yeah mate. With the HD800S you get a bit less clinical anemic bass and the peaks have been tamed while still retaining the detail and imaging of the original.
>>
>>54079581
I guess I was drinking too much of the kool aid. That Zeo's review kinda one me over for a sec.
>>
>>54079588
There are trade offs. For example the bass was emphasized a bit so it can have more body but it can sound a little bit distorted compared to the HD800 but the peak around 6khz has been tamed so that's a plus. Consider the HD800S a more musical and less clinical HD800.
>>
>>54079603
Zeos doesn't do much research. He's entertaining but has a certain bias for sound signatures and features.
>>
>>54079619
That's great to hear. I'm definitely game as I'd really like to steer away from the sterile sound of the original. Musicality was one trait I was looking for in the lcd's so it's nice to know this could be an alternative.
>>
>>54079643
Honestly go try them if you can. You'll find that the improvements you get on the top of the line headphones over the 400i are nothing to write home about. It really comes down to what sound signature you prefer. The 400i are hyper neutral and sterile in a way so they sound boring to some people but others love them.

Considering the fact that nobody ever complains about the bass of the HD650 sounding distorted I'm not sure why anyone would have the same concern over the 2nd harmonic in the HD800S.
>>
>>54079708
because audiophiles are nitpicky and jack off to technical data spreads even though their ears can't pick up on the flaws.
>>
>>54079727
I think you're just overestimating the difference between 2% and 5% 2nd harmonic distortion at 20Hz, or the impact of 2nd harmonic distortion at all.
>>
>>54079672
Yeah idk I'm not sure if the jump to an 800s from a 400i would be worth it if this is the case. Just right now I'm just really bored with it. I can't help but feel I can get a lot more of my playlist with another headphone. Powering it through a Grace m9xx so the amp shouldn't be a problem.

Do it, it's a hobby. No one is telling you that you shouldn't. Sure it's not a cost effective upgrade but at least you have the means to and you will enjoy it. You could just be feeling upgradeitis. Honestly, if a 500 dollar headphone doesn't make you enjoy your music then maybe it's the music that's boring you.

What are your thoughts on the 400i?

Some people say it's a fine headphone to listen to while others say the exact opposite and say it's a waste of money.

Been thinking of buying it
>>
>>54079840
It's a really good headphone. It gets a lot of shelf time at my house because i usually use my closed back headphones for maximum isolation. 400i are A+ in my books.
>>
>>54079840
most I've heard of it is that some people just don't like the sound signature of it, saying it's boring or uninspiring. Hell someone in this fucking thread said it if you scroll back.

Other than that it's an a-okay headphone objectively, no glaring problems so everything just boils down to utter preference.

I would say that you'd be happy with Grado, but you don't live in the states and they're open-backed too. iirc Grado is kinda expensive to import to other countries no?

Anyways, for under $100, monoprice isn't that bad imo. Surprisingly, skullcandy isn't that bad either these days with their aviator and navigator product lines, although the build quality is still kinda meh and feels flimsy. In any case, I'm sure others in this thread will give better answers than I can provide

Upgrading already from LSRs? I have no experience on the Neumanns but the M040s do hiss a bit and judging by the measurements by Ken Rockwell the amplifiers start to clip around 100 dB which is quite low for monitors. That might or might not be a problem. I have them on my desk so I don't need that much SPL but for a larger space you might. Other than build quality I'm not seeing a lot of an improvement compared to the LSRs. Maybe a little bit of more extension in bass and in the case of Neumann likely higher maximum SPL.

>>54079752
It's comfy, gets really good after EQ and it's fine otherwise. I haven't considered getting new headphones after I bought mine but I think that has a lot to do about EQ and reading/understanding more about headphones. Right now if I were to shop for headphones I'd probably settle for something else had I not bought these already. I don't regret my purchase one bit however, it's just that after proper use of EQ everything tends to level out in decent quality headphones and something a lot more affordable could've done the job for me.

My advice would be to look for a headphone which is really comfortable for you personally, has a sound signature at least closely what you prefer and a response without high Q resonances or large dips which are hard to EQ out.

Shame, I have a hi-fi shop a mile away from my place where you can audition stuff like Auduze, Senns, Stax, HiFiman and other high end gear. Soon they should have a freaking Orpheus setup, I might come over to drool on it.

Yeah saw the measurement. Might want to do it one channel at a time and from a small area of where you sit. Average the channel specific responses and apply EQ to the lower freqs if the responses from each channel are at least somewhat similar. Otherwise room treatment is the only solution. They seem superbly linear as expected beyond room modes. You could cheat with a sub and some DSP instead of getting new monitors.

Been thinking of relocating my M040s further back but I'm running out of room if I also want to sit comfortably on my computer. Right now they are a bit too close and toed in a lot yet I still lose the highs in my normal seating position. Can't wall mount them either.

If you have noise it's worth a try it before investing in usb filters. I had problems with noise when I connected my LSR 305 to my external DAC.

PC -> USB powered DAC -> RCA -> LSR 305.

First I feared that it was noise interference on the RCA cable and that I needed balanced XLRs. But I changed the USB cable with one with ferrite bead and the noise when away.

Yeah there's not much that can be done with EQ unfortunately, there's some room mode from the left speaker causing a low-Q dip centered at around 100Hz. (Which isn't as obvious in the averaged response or in listening) Also need to figure out what is causing the peaking at 150Hz which happens on both channels, though to a lesser extent on the right one.

I'm going to be picking up some isoacoustics stands this week to use, my DIY hackjob speaker stands aren't identical and as a result the speakers are probably off axis a little bit.

>You could cheat with a sub and some DSP instead of getting new monitors.
I could, but considering the price of importing the LSR310S and buying a little MiniDSP box I'm a bit hesitant there. Either way the upgrade would be next year anyway so best to optimize what I have for now. Front ported Neumanns would certainly be much better up against the wall or close to it.

>Been thinking of relocating my M040s further back but I'm running out of room if I also want to sit comfortably on my computer.
At least they aren't rear ported so you can get away with a lot more.
>Right now they are a bit too close and toed in a lot yet I still lose the highs in my normal seating position
May want to experiment a little more with the toe-in angle, I don't know if it was a little bit of horn flare but I've found my highs to sometimes rise in off-axis measurements. (Not just a peak either, but a smooth rise)

Pic related is some shitty freehand measurements I quickly did, with Right and Left being about 600mm off axis either side of my listening position. I was also being lazy and not doing seperate channel measurements so grain of salt etc and these were from before me adjusting positioning and tilt.

Or am I actually supposed to take off the velour earpads and rinse them with water/soap if I want them clean?

I don't mind them, I have velour pads on my fidelio X2 with memory foam it is relatively comfy as long as it is big enough for my ear to fit and big enough so your ear lobes don't touch the driver or apply too much pressure to your noggin depending on clamp force.

How come headphone measurements has different "ideal" frequency responses?

One chart has one where it starts from the bottom of the graph in the bass range, then goes up to a flat line, then another one does the complete opposite, where line starts from the top of the graph and slopes down into a flat line, then other places just says "if it's flat then it's perfect"

Innerfidelity suggests the Harman line, there's too many fucking 'ideal' response curves has anyone actually done a full depth analysis on this shit

Best neutral-ish sounding open back headphones for around $300-500?

Would prefer them to not require any amp, I would use them direct from pc/tablet/guitar amplifier headphone out. Velour or comfy is desired plus.

For the record I have K7XXs currently, they are under repair with a friend for what I presume is a bad solder. Would like to know if there's a better alternative or it's all diminishing returns in that price range compared to what I have.

Something seems a bit odd with these two statements.

kek. I'm not using them with any amp right now.
I'm sure I'm missing out some of the potential. Any recommendations?

not much really. I don't perceive much a difference between my onboard (Z97-A) and my Fii E10K for my K702s.

Then again, I'm not doing a blind test so I'm just trying to favour one over the other because I'm definitely biased towards the $100 amp I just bought.

I definitely have it plugged into the amp in always since it seems like the binaural effect is more solid that way.

There's leather earpads for the K702?

Onboard sound is pretty good nowadays and so are smartphones surprisingly enough. It's so hard to find scientific testing with all of the snake oil thats out also.

IEMs.
Ones with cables that go over the ear and ones with cables that go down.

I'll be using the ones with cables that go down mostly in bed, so they need to be very comfortable with my head against the pillow.
>Preferred tonal balance
Warm/bassy
>Preferred music
Mostly just rock and anime/vocaloid stuff
