Manjaro i3 was pretty easy, changed a couple things in the i3 config and loved it, I honestly can't figure out i3 and all the bars etc on Xubuntu. I find what I'm using fairly comfy and usable.

Ah, yeah I do the same. I use hint slight and lcd filter default with Dejavu Sans. To be honest with Open Sans I can never make up my mind on hinting, every option has issues.
Gnome 3 bros: what do you use to have global hotkeys? I'm coming from a different WM where I've bound Alt+D to a program launcher, Alt+Enter to open a term, etc. Holy crap I hate clicking around with the inefficient mouse, but Gnome 3 looks so good...
