might want to think about using a WM, i hear 17.3 is supposed to have better support for openbox now, (don't know if it's true) or try LXDE, i know that does work on mint well (just don't switch your login screen from mint to LXDE there's a bug that turns off your root privileges), but you can remove borders by right clicking the the title and hit undecorate, plus you'll be getting familiar with a DE that's more like a WM
