How good is the T420's keyboard/trackpoint/touchpad/screen/build quality compared to a T430 or a latitude E6430? I'm going to play autism keyboardsmash games on the go with it, so if the keyboard doesn't kill my fingers by bottoming out with little force and the n-key rollover doesn't suck then it's fine.
The thinkpad T420 and T430 apparently can upgrade to an i7-3720QM (T420 needs a coreboot BIOS), but does it work well? I know that the latitude E6430 had an i7-3720QM model.

What's a good presentation software to use for latex beamer (pdf) presentations with a thinkpad tablet?
I'd like to be able to annotate stuff and change pages without visible buttons during presentation. I'd use Xournal, but the presentation support is non-existant.

I think the keyboard on my X301 died, but I fear it may be full board failure. It boots fine, getting beep codes but cant determine what they are, and will function fine with an external keyboard. The caps lock seems to be stuck on (light wont switch off, little marker at the top too) and absolutely none of the keys will work. Worth it to try and replace the keyboard on it or just junk it?

For what its worth, the last gen 14" Yogas seem to be much cheaper used than comparable X1's.
I was tempted to get one, but decided against it, because I dont really trust their keyboard.
Just got a refurbished x60s, it runs at around 60C idle.

It's good res but shit screen. Ended up selling my t420 to get a x220 with IPS panel. Way better screen, better battery, lighter, not a hotplate like the t420. Only thing that sucks on the x220 is the god awful touchpad. Must get use to the clit.

15" models are where to look for good screens. W series in particular have very good color accuracy, but they all go up to 1920x1080 (1920x1200 prior to T510, and 1600x1200 IPS prior to T61).
What linux distribution doesn't affect the t420's trackpoint. Ive used mint and the trackpoint and the middle button to scrow don't work.

T510 is probably your best bet for price. Since the T520 is pretty much the same thing but better, that's the one most people are going to look for, and the T500 is 16:10 so it attracts the autists who need that. T510 is left relatively unwanted and cheap.

The Thinkpad Advanced Dock has a PCI-E slot that can take up to a desktop GPU up to 50W.

Normally I have it set to turn off and only use the external screen, but it is possible to use both at the same time. The GPU doesn't like that though, the internal screen becomes very unresponsive if you try to do anything on it. Even typing gets delayed.

If I limit the upper charge threshold with tp_smapi to 80%, what happens when I keep the charger plugged in?
Will it switch to the battery, drain it back to 79%, charge up to 80% and keep doing that forever or will it permanently switch to the AC power supply for work? I seriously hope it's not the former, because it sounds kinda wasteful.
I have the T430 model and it is amazing. Got it for $600, new, a couple years ago and it is still performing up to speed. I put in a 250GB SSD into it and have never been happier. I've also dropped the motherfucker and smashed the screen and backing to shit, but for $100 was able to get the screen replaced as good as new. It still performs better than most macs out there imo

The yoga 14/ yoga 460 has a 940m, and is essentially a slightly gimped (i5 vs. i7) p40 for ~$575 less.
The Quadro 500M and 940 both are 28nm, 30W, 384 shader core Kepler GM108 GPUs. having some weird thermal issues after dropping the C2D-T9600 in my Lifebook T5010, which is odd because it's an OEM-supported configuration.
Arctic Silver was applied to both these machines. The T731 is incredibly happy, clocking itself up to 3GHz and running Whiplash almost as smooth as my 1st-gen i7 desktop, with much lower temps than it did before.
The T5010 ends up at TJmax in about 5 minutes and throttles itself into uselessness.
Seems like either T9600s just run ridiculously hot (according to googled anecdotes), or the heatsink isn't completely down on the CPU. If I tighten those screws any more I'll fucking strip 'em, so idkwtf.

Could be distro related though (using opensuse), maybe it works with gentoo/arch/debian/… - anyone else got an upd720202 card working?
Back when I got mine a had a look if it can be fixed for me, but it didn't.
