IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Any good laptops around $150-250 that can have their CPU upgraded to an i7-3720QM later on?

How good is the T420's keyboard/trackpoint/touchpad/screen/build quality compared to a T430 or a latitude E6430? I'm going to play autism keyboardsmash games on the go with it, so if the keyboard doesn't kill my fingers by bottoming out with little force and the n-key rollover doesn't suck then it's fine.

The thinkpad T420 and T430 apparently can upgrade to an i7-3720QM (T420 needs a coreboot BIOS), but does it work well? I know that the latitude E6430 had an i7-3720QM model.
>>
>>53482363
I'd go for the E6430, it's an Ivy Bridge laptop from the start, and it's not a chiclet keyboard.

I don't know anon, the keys on mine are hard as fuck and give you lots of feedback, I only prefer non chiclets because of their look, chiclets take me back to the days of my shitty 2009 13.3 inch white macbook that was a nightmare.

the e6400 keyboard was pretty decent but it's all downhill from there
>>
>>53482621
Definitely, I don't know why they dropped their magnesium design, which is heavy and feels amazing, for a consumer look, while Lenovo kept their classic look, becoming the winner when it came to sandy bridge laptops.
>>
>>53482486
Add an extra 30 bucks for the trackpad swap.

All E6xxx Latitudes after the E6410 have magesium rollcages and aluminium body panels.

HP Elitebooks have similar construction.

I think the keyboard on my X301 died, but I fear it may be full board failure. It boots fine, getting beep codes but cant determine what they are, and will function fine with an external keyboard. The caps lock seems to be stuck on (light wont switch off, little marker at the top too) and absolutely none of the keys will work. Worth it to try and replace the keyboard on it or just junk it?

I'm currently trying to off-load my T430 and daily driver X230 tablet in order to buy a P40 Yoga.

>>
>>53484333
>but I want something from one of the /tpg/ approved ThinkPad lines
Are the Yogas actually /tpg/ approved? Because the OP clearly says
>Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™
and I am not sure if the P overrides the Yoga…
For what its worth, the last gen 14" Yogas seem to be much cheaper used than comparable X1's.
I was tempted to get one, but decided against it, because I dont really trust their keyboard.
>>
Just got a refurbished x60s, it runs at around 60C idle.

Is this normal? If not, how can I fix it?
>>
>>53484379
The P may not override the Yoga, but another thing I wanted the P40 Yoga over the Yoga 14 is the pen input. I like to draw in my free time but still have a good workstation for class work.
>>
>>53484411
Clean the fan and reapply thermal paste. But those old things run a bit warmer. My X200 is idling at around 50°C.
>>
>>53484443
I would have expected the shop to have already done those. Oh well.
>>
>>53481711
It's good res but shit screen. Ended up selling my t420 to get a x220 with IPS panel. Way better screen, better battery, lighter, not a hotplate like the t420. Only thing that sucks on the x220 is the god awful touchpad. Must get use to the clit.
>>
I've read through the guide. Unless I'm blind, there doesn't seem to be a table listing models with non-shitty screens.

Is there a breakdown of the available screen resolutions for each model? I don't really care about anything else aside from that.
>>
>>53484460
Why would they do that?

"Refurbished" doesn't actually mean anything, it's just a normal used laptop.
>>
>>53484967
15" models are where to look for good screens. W series in particular have very good color accuracy, but they all go up to 1920x1080 (1920x1200 prior to T510, and 1600x1200 IPS prior to T61).
>>
What linux distribution doesn't affect the t420's trackpoint. Ive used mint and the trackpoint and the middle button to scrow don't work.
>>
>>53484411
>>53484443
The main heat problem on the *60 generation was the wireless card Lelnovo chose, they run hot as fuck for some reason. Find a whitelist BIOS and replace that shit.
>>
>>53485122
What? How old is your kernel? New stuff should work out of the box, but try
xinput set-prop "TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint" "Evdev Wheel Emulation" 1
xinput set-prop "TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint" "Evdev Wheel Emulation Timeout" 200
xinput set-prop "TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint" "Evdev Wheel Emulation Axes" 6 7 4 5
xinput set-prop "TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint" "Evdev Wheel Emulation Button" 2

which was the way for older distros.
>>
>>53485086
Thanks.

I'm not very concerned about colour accuracy if I'm going to be running terminals and vim. However, I am looking to spend as little as possible aside from the screen, so W series might be a bit pricey (and hard to get down here).

Any suggestions from the T-series, or hell, any other laptops? I'm even considering first-gen retina macbooks for the screen alone.
>>
>>53484379
Yoga = X series tablet with a fancy hinge.

>>
>>53485176
T510 is probably your best bet for price. Since the T520 is pretty much the same thing but better, that's the one most people are going to look for, and the T500 is 16:10 so it attracts the autists who need that. T510 is left relatively unwanted and cheap.

The Thinkpad Advanced Dock has a PCI-E slot that can take up to a desktop GPU up to 50W.

>What happens to laptops screen when you use eGPU?
Normally I have it set to turn off and only use the external screen, but it is possible to use both at the same time. The GPU doesn't like that though, the internal screen becomes very unresponsive if you try to do anything on it. Even typing gets delayed.

I guess the dock port is able to carry a signal back to the internal display. I'm not really sure how it works, honestly. You can't find any documentation on this thing, even on Lenovo's site it seems they want to pretend this never existed.

If I limit the upper charge threshold with tp_smapi to 80%, what happens when I keep the charger plugged in?
Will it switch to the battery, drain it back to 79%, charge up to 80% and keep doing that forever or will it permanently switch to the AC power supply for work? I seriously hope it's not the former, because it sounds kinda wasteful.

I have the T430 model and it is amazing. Got it for $600, new, a couple years ago and it is still performing up to speed. I put in a 250GB SSD into it and have never been happier. The best upgrade you can do is the SSD, you aren't going to notice a significant difference between p8700 and p9700. I wouldn't bother with it unless you had money to blow and were redoing the thermal paste already.
>>
>>53491356
My main e6400 has the T9550 2.66 35W and it's great, I nmay upgrade to the T9900 3.06 with the same wattage or the P9600, which is just like a T9550, but with a 25W TDP, the best chip for power and energy.

The yoga 14/ yoga 460 has a 940m, and is essentially a slightly gimped (i5 vs. i7) p40 for ~$575 less.

The Quadro 500M and 940 both are 28nm, 30W, 384 shader core Kepler GM108 GPUs. So unless you really get your dick hard for certain pipelines that could take full advantage of the quadro, or are deadset on having a slightly higher quality CPU for that much, I frankly do not see why the "P" branding is so important.

Can't for the life of me decide between a Dell XPS 13 and a Macbook Pro. They're both on sale for -20%

Going to use it mainly for my art or light gaming, but the art program I use most is not available on Mac without the windows emulator. On the other hand I've heard Mac beats out other laptops on a general spectrum. On the other other hand, I do not like the control key/keyboard layout on Mac especially as I use these a lot in art programs. Also generally a lot of shit isn't compatible on Mac, namely more obscure art programs/games.

Had pa trying to talk me out of the XPS, asserting that Dell is shit according to his PC repair guy and that everyone he knows at his land sales business uses a toshiba or an "apple macintosh."

My main desktop is windows too if that matters. Maybe having one windows and one mac is beneficial somehow?

Get the Dell.
>Maybe having one windows and one mac is beneficial somehow?
No.
I used to have a MBP.
After years I still was less productive on it than I was on my desktop computer with Windows on.
>>
>>53500567
The Dell is fully user serviceable.
The Macbook is not.
>>
>>53500727

As a rMBP owner debating the viability of $900 of 'repairs' because the whole fucking internals are glued and soldered together, this will definitely influence my next laptop purchase. Go with the Dell.
>>
>>53500655
>>53500727
Shame the Dell battery is only rated for 300 cycles vs the MacBook battery which is rated for 1000 cycles.
>>
>>53500809
yes but you can actually remove the battery from the Dell and replace it

https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Dell+XPS+13+Teardown/36157

You can also upgrade the SSD and wireless hardware, but like the Mac, the CPU and RAM are soldered on.

warranty shmarranty, don't buy something you can't fix yourself.
>>
>>53500893
Still, it's pretty inexcusable to put in a battery that lasts for 300 cycles in a 2016 high end laptop when Apple has been doing 1000 cycle batteries for years now.

having some weird thermal issues after dropping the C2D-T9600 in my Lifebook T5010, which is odd because it's an OEM-supported configuration.

Arctic Silver was applied to both these machines. The T731 is incredibly happy, clocking itself up to 3GHz and running Whiplash almost as smooth as my 1st-gen i7 desktop, with much lower temps than it did before.
The T5010 ends up at TJmax in about 5 minutes and throttles itself into uselessness.

Seems like either T9600s just run ridiculously hot (according to googled anecdotes), or the heatsink isn't completely down on the CPU. If I tighten those screws any more I'll fucking strip 'em, so idkwtf.

any good laptop under $264 that can get upgraded to an i7-3xxxqm 45W? send help

has anyone upgraded their T430 to a 45W quad core CPU? It's the only reason why i'm leaning towards a latitude e6430

if i get that 3d printed adapter that lets you use a thinkpad nub in a latitude, would that make the pointstick feel better?

How easy is it to upgrade a T420?

Finally a wagecuck again, so I can spend money on things I don't really need, so I'm gonna purchase a T420 to replace my customized Chromebook.

I'm mostly looking to upgrade the CPU + add an Nvidia GPU if the model I pick up doesn't have one.

It's only $48 so it's not a big deal if it's shit.

>>53500567
Depends on what kind of art shit you do
because there will be people who will automatically believe you're hack if you don't buy a MacBook.

When you get the mac, you're just going to end up buying more software for it if you can't get those programs to work.

>>53500955
And yet the Mac Pro is still has the same price and specs since it was released late 2013.

>>53502073
Something about throttling and shit can be a problem.

>>53502422
Maybe it had a different heat sink for that model?
>>
>>53485086
So basically, I should get a W520 to replace my T420 if I want a better panel seeing as the Chinese guys haven't made a chip for the T420 proper and only the T420s
>>
Thinking about getting a T420 from Amazon. Has anyone ever bought one from there?

E7440 with FHD AUO IPS Panel is great
You might be able to get a dreamcolor Elitebook for under $900....might get lucky if you see a swirl palette on the top right of the LCD bezel that isn't advertised as DreamColor.

I just use the old IBM bags that are NOS like this one.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/IBM-Thinkpad-Bag-/222035694624?hash=item33b25bd420:g:G~wAAOSwAYtWPiSN

>>53503817
You're probably better off getting an MXM Elitebook or Latitude

You will have to mobo swap if you want nVidia graphics (which at this time and age, are outclassed by integrated graphics)

You could drop in a CPU afterwards.

But you may just waste money by time/upgrades when you could of bought something much more powerful in the first place.

>>53503930
T440p, T440s or T450 with an IPS swap
trackpad swap the T440x
>>
>>53503988
Bought one from Amazon, it was fine. 4gb, 500gb hdd, 1600x900 screen. Right around $250. Their batteries are overpriced though. Battery was nearly shot but I picked one up on ebay for $25.
>>
>>53490646

>>
My x60 is running really hot, is that normal? I'm running Slackware and I don't even really use X for most things so I don't think I'm putting too much stress on it
>>
>>53504015
Huh. I completely didn't think about the possibility than an Intel GPU might be more powerful than an old-ass Nvidia card. I feel dumb now.

Any good suggestions for an Elitebook or Latitude that are about the same price as a T420? (I haven't owned a Dell product since the Precision M400, which finally died last year, and I've never owned an HP laptop.)
>>
>>53503988
Definitely, buy from amazon!
>okay but I can't seem to find one at the price that its recommended on the guide
Its okay anon, that $150 mark up is worth customer service and guaranteed shipping!
>are you sure?
No anon, its fine, you see they show you stock photos of the item, thats what you're going to get, well something like that.
>I got this laptop and it has dings and scratches, why is it
Anon thats okay, you see those laptops wont sell if they took actual photos of that thing, LOL.
>my friend just got a laptop for $200 and its way better than mine!
Hmmm maybe because (s)he read the guide, maybe because they saw what they were actually getting, maybe they bought from someone who isn't going to get fucked with Amazon's selling fees (which are worse than eBay's)
>>
>>53502359
update, then downgrade again, your hardware will be registered and you'll have a legit 10 license.

this T43 keyboard feels more mushy/soft/weird and unresponsive than newer models i've tried. Are they just worse or could it be worn? The keys are shiny but all the lettering is there

I've heard bad things about HP panels but the 8470p seems to be at T420 prices despite it being a gen newer.
That 8570w I posted, I got for $260 after everything I needed to get it there.
Though they were an i5, I had one with a FirePro M4000 and nVidia K1000m (k2000m is where its at).

I think you're going to have to flash bios tho if you are going to upgrade GPUs... I don't have much info on those sadly.

Also E6420's have had overheating problems with their i7 CPUs, something about Dell providing a weaker heatsink for them. So it would suck if you had to buy another part for it to be fine.

>>53504068
idk, but once I got one, I was hooked.
Course I wouldn't pay new price for this, shit is expensive!
The only other product I can think of thats overpriced for its performance is probably late 90's to 2000's Harley Davidsons.

>>53504152
They do have a different feel, but those keys are probably just too old and abused.

>>
>>53504309
Ah. I'll stick with the regular variant. If I remember correctly, s is "thin and light" overpriced shit
I'll end up having to get the machine with at least an i7 to counteract the shit that is the U processors. If I can find a true quad core i7 I'm buying that shit even if it cost more than my car did
>>
>>53504205
oh god the 8470P looks delicious

i might pick that up once i get paid if i decide to not go with the T420

T440 is basically a T440s with shit specs
Don't have specifics on T450 and T450s difference other than s model has soldiered RAM.

Again I don't know how bad the panels are but they are pretty well equipped for the price... I don't know why that is though.

I'd run PS (usually at 1500x30000) and edit videos (720p, ~9 hours long), would be able to handle this stuff efficiently?

Upgraded from a T420 to this. I was only gonna do it if I found a 1600x900 and one in good condition. After a lot of searching, got this with an i5 and 8gigs for approx. $260.

I have picture as an usb3 card on my t420, which also uses the upd720202 chip.

You need tweezers to get it properly in and out.

And using linux it works like shit.
Only recognizes drives if you boot with them. Insert after boot and nothing happens. Using windows works fine however - great drivers …
Could be distro related though (using opensuse), maybe it works with gentoo/arch/debian/… - anyone else got an upd720202 card working?
Back when I got mine a had a look if it can be fixed for me, but it didn't.
